Waiting on Wednesday (#184): Poison's Kiss by Breeana Shields

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week, I'm featuring:

Poison's Kiss by Breeana Shields
Book One of an untitled series
Publisher: Random House Books for Young Readers
Publication Date: January 10, 2017

Summary (from Goodreads):

A teenage assassin kills with a single kiss until she is ordered to kill the one boy she loves. This commercial YA fantasy is romantic and addictive like a poison kiss and will thrill fans of Sarah J. Maas and Victoria Aveyard.

Marinda has kissed dozens of boys. They all die afterward. It s a miserable life, but being a visha kanya a poison maiden is what she was created to do. Marinda serves the Raja by dispatching his enemies with only her lips as a weapon.

Until now, the men she was ordered to kiss have been strangers, enemies of the kingdom. Then she receives orders to kiss Deven, a boy she knows too well to be convinced he needs to die. She begins to question who she s really working for. And that is a thread that, once pulled, will unravel more than she can afford to lose.

This rich, surprising, and accessible debut is based in Indian folklore and delivers a story that will keep readers on the edge of their seats.

I've had this book added to my Goodreads TBR for over a year now, long before a cover and synopsis existed! I'm excited about this one, but I'm also a wee bit nervous, since it's based on Indian folklore. (Non-Indian) YA authors have been VERY hit or miss with Indian culture. (Context: I am Indian.) Soooo, let's see whatcha got, Breeana Shields!

  3. I can’t wait for this one either! That cover does look super cool. And I’m Indian too, so here’s to hoping that the author doesn’t fudge up anything, haha. I’m excited though because I don’t think I’ve read a YA book featuring Indian mythology/folklore, which is pretty sad. Any-hoo, great pick this week! Can’t wait :D

    1. LOL! Girl, let's hope! Have you read The Star-Touched Queen? It's a recent one, and very good. But there is a distinct lack of Indian-based stories in YA. Colleen Houck's series was AWFUL.

  5. Oh this sounds interesting! Also how much would it suck to have a deadly kiss you couldn't turn off...no fun kissing times! Adding to my TBR now. My WoW

  8. I love this cover! I do hope this one works for you and lives up to your expectations of an Indian story! That must be very frustrating...I'm actually about to read a different book with an Indian theme/setting but I believe it's written by an Indian. I'll let you know how it goes:-)

  12. I'm very curious about this one because of the Indian folklore too, but also wary because as you said, she doesn't appear to be Indian herself. Still, I'm giving the author the benefit of the doubt. I hope it's good! :)
    Great pick, Alyssa!

    1. I'm hoping that it won't hurt to try... usually, it very much hurts (example: Colleen Houck's debut series). We shall see!

    1. Oops I hit send before I was done lol-

I understand being concerned about the Indian folklore in this one since she doesn't appear to be Indian herself. But hopefully she does a good job with it and it hits the mark. I hope you love it!! Also that is a cool cover. 😀😀

  22. So yea. I can't look forward to this one. I have a super huge fear of snakes, including pictures of them. So this cover would prevent me from loving the book lol. Seriously, I feel like I have snakes crawling on me now. But, I hope you get to love it soon! Here's my WoW if you'd like to stop by my blog.
