Review: Namesake by Adrienne Young

Namesake by Adrienne Young
Book One of the Fable series
Publisher: Wednesday Books
Publication Date: March 16, 2021
Rating: 5 stars
Source: Copy provided by the publisher

Summary (from Goodreads):

Trader. Fighter. Survivor.

With the Marigold ship free of her father, Fable and its crew were set to start over. That freedom is short-lived when she becomes a pawn in a notorious thug’s scheme. In order to get to her intended destination she must help him to secure a partnership with Holland, a powerful gem trader who is more than she seems.

As Fable descends deeper into a world of betrayal and deception she learns that her mother was keeping secrets, and those secrets are now putting the people Fable cares about in danger. If Fable is going to save them then she must risk everything, including the boy she loves and the home she has finally found.

Filled with action, emotion, and lyrical writing, New York Times bestselling author Adrienne Young returns with Namesake, the final book in the captivating Fable duology.

What I Liked:

I read Fable in early 2020, and I knew it would be a hit. I loved the book; it pulled me right out of the reading slump that I had been in, since my father passed away in 2019. Fable hit me at the right time. I received Namesake to read in Fall 2020 and I dove right back into the intriguing, mysterious world of the Narrows. Namesake is the conclusion to the Fable duology, and it's easily one of the best conclusion novels I've ever read.

Namesake picks up pretty much right where Fable left off, which, if you remember where Fable left off, you remember being pretty upset. (I was, anyway.) I won't state too much about that, since Fable published only six months ago, and I will try not to spoil anything regarding Namesake as well.

The world of Fable becomes so much larger in this book. Adrienne Young expands the world, the schemes, the politics, the characters. A wider cast of characters is brought into play, and even more political machinations, deals, risks, and revelations. Some characters who were briefly mentioned in Fable become critical players in Namesake. No specifics, but believe me, the plot thickens! I love the Pirates of the Caribbean vibe of this series. That alone was enough to make me pick up Fable, but the excellent writing, fascinating characters, and slow-burn, tension-filled romance made me fall in love with the books.

One thing I will say vaguely is that a giant Easter egg in Fable manifests in Namesake. I was pretty sure I knew what the Easter egg was when I was reading Fable, but I wasn't quite right. It's not exactly what you'd expect. Adrienne Young is so sneaky, she had us thinking one thing, when in fact it was a completely different thing! I have listened to so many of her virtual tour events and Instagram live events, and she was SO sneaky about this Easter egg. Several months after reading Namesake (I'm writing this review in February 2021), I'm still delighted by the Easter egg.

Let's talk about the romance! Fable and West are such an adorable, heartbreakingly beautiful pair. I love the romance of this book, and series. This series - actually, this book (Namesake) has the most romance on page of any of Young's books. I love the slow-burn in Fable, and the pure yearning in Namesake. The romance of this series is one of my all-time favorites of the Young Adult books I've read.

Other relationships are just as important as the romance between Fable and West; for example, Fable's relationship with her father, Saint. But also, Fable's relationship with her mother, Isolde. I can't say anything more about that but... while Fable (book one) was more so about Fable and her father, Namesake is about Fable and her mother. In a way, but not in the way you think. You'll see!

I truly love the characters that Adrienne Young has written. Fable, a smart, brave young woman. West, a selfless, mysterious man with a heart of gold. Saint, a trickster father who keeps his cards close. And the crew of the Marigold, who is the family that Fable never knew she needed. I love the characters of this book, even the "villains", who have such compelling backstories.

Tropes: slow-burn romance, a hint of enemies-to-lovers romance (kind of? between West and Fable), found family, "chosen one"... kind of. You'll see what I mean.

I won't say anything else because I don't want to spoil the book, but I will say that the book ended really well. The series wraps up wonderfully. Adrienne Young proves that you don't need mass chaos and bloodshed to end a series (I'm looking at you, Game of Thrones). I'm not saying there is NO violence at the end, but, the ending is really good. My heart was full, after reading this book. This book is absolutely worth the (short) wait, the marathon binge-read, or however you'll read this series.

What I Did Not Like:

I have no complaints! This book was such an excellent follow-up to Fable, and an amazing conclusion. I feel like I can't wait always say that about sequels or conclusion novels.

Would I Recommend It:

If you read Fable, you HAVE to finish this series. Namesake is so easy to read - I finished it quickly, once I started getting into the story. I didn't want to put the book down. This series is such a riveting fantasy series, and it has good crossover appeal to young adult readers and adults. It's a favorite for sure - the series is a favorite in general!

Rating:

5 stars. There was no doubt in my mind that Namesake would be just as incredible as Fable, if not more. Adrienne Young has not disappointed me yet; I can't wait to see what she publishes next!

Reread Campaign and Giveaway: The Triumphant by Lesley Livingston

Happy Thursday, book fam! Unfortunately I dropped the ball with this post - it's late, but I figured, better late than never. My father passed away unexpectedly on February 16th, and I've not been able to think about my blog since then. So I'm creating this post on February 25th and backdating it. The giveaway is still active!

Check out The Triumphant!

The Triumphant (Valiant, #3)

The Triumphant by Lesley Livingston
Book Three of The Defiant series
Publisher: Razorbill
Publication Date: February 12, 2019

Summary (from Goodreads):

The final book in the Valiant series takes Fallon and her warrior sisters on an epic journey from the corrupt Roman Republic to the wonder of the ancient world: Alexandria, Egypt.

“You are from a world, Fallon, that values honor over everything else. Rome is not that world.”

In the wake of their victorious fight to win back the Ludus Achillea, Fallon and her gladiatrix sisters have become the toast of the Republic. Only for Fallon, glory turns to ashes when she learns that Cai has been stripped of his Decurion rank and declared infamia, cast down to serve as one of Caesar’s gladiators. All because he chose his love for her over the life of his treacherous father during the ludus uprising.

But treachery in Rome runs far deeper than Fallon ever suspected. While she is fighting for Cai’s freedom, the unthinkable happens and the Republic begins to tear itself apart at the seams. In the chaos that follows, the Achillea gladiatrices lose any protection they might have had once and for all. They’re not the only ones.

When Fallon discovers that Cleopatra is in grave danger, she and her sister Sorcha rally their war band in an attempt to spirit the Queen of Aegypt out of Rome, embarking on a remarkable journey that will take them to Alexandria—the wonder of the ancient world—and beyond. Far beyond. Along the way, Fallon will have to decide where her heart truly lies, as well as what—and who—she is willing to sacrifice to get there.

Lesley's Top Five Moments of The Triumphant:

My top five moments while writing The Triumphant... in chronological order!

First? Getting the gig! I knew I wanted Fallon’s story to be a trilogy and when my fabulous editrix Jessica at Razorbill agreed, I was thrilled.

Second, sitting down in front of my trusty laptop, opening up a new document and typing the title page. That moment, truthfully, is always a mix of elation, anticipation... and sheer bloody-minded terror. Fun!

Third, writing the ultimate fate of a certain character that I’d known about since well before I’d even started writing the series.

Fourth: choreography! Or, figuring out that one particular perfect moment in a fight sequence (and that one particular perfect moment in a kissing sequence...)

Fifth... getting to take Fallon and her friends and family (and foes!) all the way to the end of this journey. And knowing that they would have a fantastic loyal war band of readers coming with us along the way!

The Giveaway:

Thanks to Penguin Teen, I've got a paperback copy of The Valiant and The Defiant for one lucky winner! This will be open to USA only. Ends on 02/28, 11:59 PM EST. Good luck!

Swoon Thursday (#304): The Storyteller by Traci Chee

- From the book you’re currently reading, or one you just finished, tell us what made you SWOON. What got your heart pounding, your skin tingling, and your stomach fluttering

- Try to make the swoon excerpt 140 characters (or less), if you are going to tweet about it. Use the hashtag #YABOUND when tweeting

This week, my swoon is from The Storyteller by Traci Chee!

For a second, Sefia's whole world was light and soft and warm.

"Sefia," he whispered, tucking her hair behind her ear.

She bent closer, drawn to him as a hummingbird is drawn to a flower, her mouth gently landing on his.

He leaned into her kiss, responding to her lips and wandering hands as if her very touch was magic, making him moan nad arch and yearn for more.

He laced his fingers in her hair, like he needed to be closer to her, like he couldn't get enough of her... [...]

- ARC, page 6

I cut off the ending of the sentence to avoid a little bit of spoiler. From page 6, the swoons began! I love that.

About the Author:

She studied literature and creative writing at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and earned a master of arts degree from San Francisco State University. Traci grew up in a small town with more cows than people, and now feels most at home in the mountains, scaling switchbacks and happening upon hidden highland lakes. She lives in California with her fast-fast dog. The Speaker is the second book in the Sea of Ink and Gold trilogy that began with The Reader.

Favorite Things About the Series:

Originally I was planning to share some of my favorite quotes, but there are so many! So I'm going to share some of my favorite general aspects of the series.

1. The covers. I couldn't not say something about the covers! I love how beautiful they are. And I love the diverse representation. Penguin has been slaying recently!

2. Hidden messages. I loooooooove books that contain hidden messages. Now, I'm usually pretty good with hidden messages, but not always! Last year, Traci played a little Easter Egg game on Twitter, in which followers would tweet page numbers and she would tell them if they were close to an Easter Egg ("hot") or not. This opened my eyes to several Easter Eggs that I didn't catch! This series is totally worth reading, for the hidden messages and Easter Eggs alone!

3. The added form of the books. This is neat - there are blood splatters and lines blotted-out and things like that. Kind of like what you'd see in Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff, but not quite metafiction. I mentioned that this series has great hidden messages, but I also like how there is art/form to the books too, like the ink/blood splatters and blotted-out lines.

4. The interconnecting timelines. I'm actually usually not a fan of multiple timelines being presented in a story. It gets confusing really quickly, and/or boring if you're not interested in one of the timelines. But I LOVED how Traci wrote this, particularly in book one. It was some masterful storytelling.

5. It's a series of books, about books!love books about books. Like Rachel Caine's The Great Library series. And Fahrenheit 451. And Traci Chee's Sea of Ink and Gold series (this one!). Traci has talked about how this series is a love letter to books. Read her thoughts HERE!

Then the long-term effects of Carlston’s Reclaimer work take hold, and his sanity begins to slip. At the same time, Carlston’s Dark Days Club colleague and nemesis will stop at nothing to bring Helen over to his side—and the Duke of Selburn is determined to marry her. The stakes are ever higher for Helen, and her decision will truly change the world…

My Favorite Quotes:

"In principle, I agree, but in practice, I fear we may not have the time for such niceties... The gloves are off now, and we are fighting for our lives."

- ARC, page 294

Carlston released her hands and stepped back. "Do you always pray so loudly, Jacob?"

"I do when my prayers are answered," Hallifax said.

- ARC, page 355

It felt as if her heart hovered between beats as she searched his gaunt face, and then it burst into hard joy. The kiss was in his eyes, in his smile, in the way he breathed.

- ARC, page 409

... you are my heartbeat. My pulse. You are the fire in my blood and the laughter in my soul."

- ARC, page 527

I was reading this and forgot to flag places as I went, so my fault for not having too many! I started flagging them as I neared the end, and by the end I was running into spoiler territory with my favorites. Regardless, these are quite lovely!

Waiting on Wednesday (#306): Finale by Stephanie Garber

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week, I'm featuring:

Finale by Stephanie Garber
Book Three of the Caraval series
Publisher: Flatiron Books

Summary (from Goodreads):

Welcome, welcome to Finale, the third and final book in the #1 New York Times bestselling Caraval series!

Welcome, welcome to Caraval...all games must come to an end.

It’s been two months since the last Caraval concluded, two months since the Fates have been freed from an enchanted deck of cards, two months since Tella has seen Legend, and two months since Legend claimed the empire’s throne as his own. Now, Legend is preparing for his official coronation and Tella is determined to stop it. She believes her own mother, who still remains in an enchanted sleep, is the rightful heir to the throne.

Meanwhile, Scarlett has started a game of her own. She’s challenged Julian and her former fiancé, Count Nicolas d’Arcy, to a competition where the winner will receive her hand in marriage. Finaly, Scarlett feels as if she is in complete control over her life and future. She is unaware that her mother’s past has put her in the greatest danger of all.

Caraval is over, but perhaps the greatest game of all has begun―with lives, empires, and hearts all at stake. There are no spectators this time: only those who will win...and those who will lose everything...

It's the end of the Caraval series! I'm excited. I actually didn't love Legendary but I adored Caraval so I will definitely be looking out for this one!

Blog Tour: The Dark Days Deceit by Alison Goodman

Hello everyone! I hope you all are having a wonderful Monday so far. And if not, I hope things start to look up. Today I'm sharing ten reasons why you should pick up The Dark Days Club, book one of the amazing trilogy by Alison Goodman! Stick around for more content on this series in the coming weeks!

Alyssa's Top Ten Reasons Why You Should Pick Up The Dark Days Club

10. The series is almost over. Okay, this might sound like a silly reason. But book three (the conclusion) publishes in less than three months! That's an excellent reason to start the series. No time like the present!
9. Nineteenth century historical fiction is super cool. You all probably know by now that I'm a huge historical romance fan, and love pretty much any historical time period. The 1800s is a great time period in which to set a story.
8. Alison Goodman really does her research. What's better than historical fiction? Accurate historical fiction. You can check out the extensive research that Goodman did on her website, right HERE.
7. On that note - who doesn't love some ball gowns and ball scenes? I am very partial to pretty dresses and elaborate social affairs like dances. In this series, Lady Helen is in the middle of her Season, which is peak socializing time for a young woman. I love it!
6. There is plenty of strong, gutsy women in the series. I adore Helen - she is so smart and curious, and strong in her own way. And her lady's maid, Darby, is a warrior in her own regard.
5. There is good action in the book (and series). I suppose, when one is fighting demons, there has to be good action throughout the story. Right? Right.
4. Now that I've mentioned demons - yes, this isn't just a historical fiction novel! I love the historical setting and the paranormal mashup. Demons abound! Supernatural abilities!
3.  There is a ~murder mystery~. Did Lord Carlston kill his wife? Is this just rumor? What happened to her, in truth? You'll have to read the series to find out...
2. Speaking of Lord Carlston, well, he is a reason all by himself. Do you love tall, handsome, and broody? You haven't met a man like that until you've met Lord Carlston. Helloooo hotness.
1. Slow-burn romance. Need I say more? I love slow-burn romance. Book two has one of my all-time favorite YA lit kisses. But we were talking about book one. SLOW-BURN! Love it!

(Do yourself a favor. Pick up this series. Look, there is a giveaway on Goodreads for a copy of The Dark Days Club!)

She had the world on her shoulders. Now she has nothing.

Reyna Carpenter was twenty-one when she became a live-in blood escort for the ruthless and darkly handsome vampire Beckham Anderson. She thought this was just a small price to pay for feeding her brothers back home.

But nothing went as planned. Not even her tumultuous relationship with Beckham. And now she wonders if anything will ever be the same again.

As she finds herself in the midst of a losing rebellion, she and her trusted friends must flee from a city conquered by the vampire elite. With their plans blown to pieces and everything they knew and loved gone, their future hangs in the balance.

Despite all she has lost, Reyna must rise from the ashes, reclaim the life that was stolen—and complete her mission, once and for all.

Mini Review:

I'm going to keep this super short, to the point of vagueness, because this is a conclusion novel and the previous book did have quite a cliffhanger ending. I want to write a more thorough review several weeks after publication, to be fair. For now, you can enjoy my brief thoughts.

Usually when it comes to romance novels, I don't prefer continuous sequels (I like standalones with companion sequels), but the structure of this series really worked for me. I especially liked how quick the release dates were - we didn't have to wait years for the series to continue and end. Whew!

This conclusion novel was exciting, engrossing, and thrilling. I love how this series is so much more than a paranormal romance series. There is plenty of plot and subplot and a dark villain that will make you so angry. And yet the romance is present in every page of the book. I love how important the romance was, but I also love how the "bigger picture" - saving the world - was also important.

In terms of Beckham and Reyna... what I will say is that there is a reason why this book's cover has two people on it. I love this pair and I love how sexy they are together, as well as how in sync they are. They are a lovely couple! They have plenty of obstacles to overcome, and they have their own problems, but each obstacle makes them more solid together.

This book ends well, so don't worry about that! I'll stop with that. This series is so worth reading, especially now that you can binge-read it. Go forth and indulge!
