Blog Tour and Giveaway: The Beautiful by Renée Ahdieh

Welcome to the blog tour for The Beautiful by Renée Ahdieh! I'm thrilled and honored to be a part of this wonderful promotion! Check out my interview with Renée below - and be sure to come back to my blog on October 4th for a huge giveaway!

Meet Renée!
(I have, in person, twice. She's amazing!)

Renée Ahdieh
(Image from Goodreads)

Alyssa: Arjun Desai" is an Indian name (represent!). Was there a specific inspiration for the name?

Renée: One of my closest friends from college is originally from Mumbai, and my husband and I have visited him four times since we graduated. His name is not Arjun, but so much of Arjun’s character is informed by these amazing experiences we got to share with his family in his world. I chose “Arjun” for this character’s names because it means “bright, shining,” and I think this word most aptly describes his personality. He is often a light in the darkness.

Alyssa: What was something about Arjun that you struggled to write or come up with?

Renée: Arjun was a character that came to mind almost fully formed, which is such a rare treat for me as a writer. I think it was because I channeled so many of my own experiences with our close friend, as well as understanding what Arjun wanted and needed early on in the story.

Alyssa: What is a quality or trait or Arjun that you also share?

Renée: This is a bit of a spoiler for later, as it’s not immediately apparent in The Beautiful, but Arjun loves to cook. He’s also a vegetarian, and his passion for the cuisine of his country will become much more obvious in subsequent books.

Alyssa: What is one message or truth that Arjun would want everyone to know?

Renée: Arjun is a character with a lot of anger in his family, and it taught him at an early age how destructive anger can be, especially with those to whom you are closest.

Alyssa: What would Arjun's favorite Bollywood movie be?

Renée: Arjun is both a softie and a lover of good comedy, so either "Devdas" or "Dostana"! But he also enjoys a good cricket match, so perhaps even "Lagaan"? There are too many to choose from!

Alyssa: Excellent choices. Thanks so much, Renée! I'll see you in D.C. in a few weeks!

The Beautiful by Renée Ahdieh
Book One of The Beautiful series
Publisher: G.P. Putnam's Sons Books for Young Readers
Publication Date: October 8, 2019

Summary (from Goodreads):

New York Times bestselling author Renée Ahdieh returns with a sumptuous, sultry and romantic new series set in 19th century New Orleans where vampires hide in plain sight.

In 1872, New Orleans is a city ruled by the dead. But to seventeen-year-old Celine Rousseau, New Orleans provides her a refuge after she's forced to flee her life as a dressmaker in Paris. Taken in by the sisters of the Ursuline convent along with six other girls, Celine quickly becomes enamored with the vibrant city from the music to the food to the soirées and—especially—to the danger. She soon becomes embroiled in the city's glitzy underworld, known as La Cour des Lions, after catching the eye of the group's leader, the enigmatic Sébastien Saint Germain. When the body of one of the girls from the convent is found in the lair of La Cour des Lions, Celine battles her attraction to him and suspicions about Sébastien's guilt along with the shame of her own horrible secret.

When more bodies are discovered, each crime more gruesome than the last, Celine and New Orleans become gripped by the terror of a serial killer on the loose—one Celine is sure has set her in his sights . . . and who may even be the young man who has stolen her heart. As the murders continue to go unsolved, Celine takes matters into her own hands and soon uncovers something even more shocking: an age-old feud from the darkest creatures of the underworld reveals a truth about Celine she always suspected simmered just beneath the surface.

At once a sultry romance and a thrilling murder mystery, master storyteller Renée Ahdieh embarks on her most potent fantasy series yet: The Beautiful.

Blog Tour: The Dark Days Deceit by Alison Goodman

Happy Monday! I hope your week has gotten off to a fantastic start. I'm so excited to participate in the final leg of the Dark Days blog tour! I'll be sharing some of my favorite quotes from The Dark Days Deceit, book three. This book publishes quite soon, so get ready!

About The Dark Days Deceit:

The Dark Days Deceit by Alison Goodman
Book Three of The Dark Days Club series
Publisher: Viking Books for Young Readers
Publication Date: November 20, 2018

Summary (from Goodreads):

The thrilling, genre-bending conclusion to Lady Helen's demon-hunting adventures, set in the glittering Regency world.

Lady Helen has retreated to a country estate outside Bath to prepare for her wedding to the Duke of Selburn, yet she knows she has unfinished business to complete. She and the dangerously charismatic Lord Carlston have learned they are a dyad, bonded in blood, and only they are strong enough to defeat the Grand Deceiver, who threatens to throw mankind into chaos. But the heinous death-soaked Ligatus Helen has absorbed is tearing a rift in her mind. Its power, if unleashed, will annihilate both Helen and Carlston unless they can find a way to harness its ghastly force and defeat their enemy.

In the final book of the trilogy that began with The Dark Days Club and continued with The Dark Days Pact, the intrepid Lady Helen's story hurtles to a shocking conclusion full of action, heartbreak, and betrayal.

About The Dark Days Club:

The Dark Days Club (Lady Helen, #1)

The Dark Days Club by Alison Goodman
Book One of The Dark Days Club series
Publisher: Viking Books for Young Readers
Publication Date: January 26, 2016

Summary (from Goodreads):

From the New York Times bestselling author of Eon and Eona; a Regency adventure series starring a stylish and intrepid Buffy-esque demon-hunter

London, April 1812. On the eve of eighteen-year-old Lady Helen Wrexhall's presentation to the queen, one of her family's housemaids disappears-and Helen is drawn into the shadows of Regency London. There, she meets Lord Carlston, one of the few who can stop the perpetrators: a cabal of demons infiltrating every level of society. Dare she ask for his help, when his reputation is almost as black as his lingering eyes? And will her intelligence and headstrong curiosity wind up leading them into a death trap?

About The Dark Days Pact:

The Dark Days Pact by Alison Goodman
Book Two of The Dark Days Club series
Publisher: Viking Books for Young Readers
Publication Date: January 31, 2017

Summary (from Goodreads):

June 1812. Just weeks after her catastrophic coming-out ball, Lady Helen Wrexhall—now disowned by her uncle—is a full member of the demon-hunting Dark Days Club. Her mentor, Lord Carlston, has arranged for Helen and her maid, Darby, to spend the summer season in Bristol, where Helen can sharpen her Reclaimer powers. Then the long-term effects of Carlston’s Reclaimer work take hold, and his sanity begins to slip. At the same time, Carlston’s Dark Days Club colleague and nemesis will stop at nothing to bring Helen over to his side—and the Duke of Selburn is determined to marry her. The stakes are ever higher for Helen, and her decision will truly change the world…

My Favorite Quotes:

"In principle, I agree, but in practice, I fear we may not have the time for such niceties... The gloves are off now, and we are fighting for our lives."

- ARC, page 294

Carlston released her hands and stepped back. "Do you always pray so loudly, Jacob?"

"I do when my prayers are answered," Hallifax said.

- ARC, page 355

It felt as if her heart hovered between beats as she searched his gaunt face, and then it burst into hard joy. The kiss was in his eyes, in his smile, in the way he breathed.

- ARC, page 409

... you are my heartbeat. My pulse. You are the fire in my blood and the laughter in my soul."

- ARC, page 527

I was reading this and forgot to flag places as I went, so my fault for not having too many! I started flagging them as I neared the end, and by the end I was running into spoiler territory with my favorites. Regardless, these are quite lovely!

Blog Tour: The Dark Days Deceit by Alison Goodman

Hello everyone! I hope you all are having a wonderful Monday so far. And if not, I hope things start to look up. Today I'm sharing ten reasons why you should pick up The Dark Days Club, book one of the amazing trilogy by Alison Goodman! Stick around for more content on this series in the coming weeks!

Alyssa's Top Ten Reasons Why You Should Pick Up The Dark Days Club

10. The series is almost over. Okay, this might sound like a silly reason. But book three (the conclusion) publishes in less than three months! That's an excellent reason to start the series. No time like the present!
9. Nineteenth century historical fiction is super cool. You all probably know by now that I'm a huge historical romance fan, and love pretty much any historical time period. The 1800s is a great time period in which to set a story.
8. Alison Goodman really does her research. What's better than historical fiction? Accurate historical fiction. You can check out the extensive research that Goodman did on her website, right HERE.
7. On that note - who doesn't love some ball gowns and ball scenes? I am very partial to pretty dresses and elaborate social affairs like dances. In this series, Lady Helen is in the middle of her Season, which is peak socializing time for a young woman. I love it!
6. There is plenty of strong, gutsy women in the series. I adore Helen - she is so smart and curious, and strong in her own way. And her lady's maid, Darby, is a warrior in her own regard.
5. There is good action in the book (and series). I suppose, when one is fighting demons, there has to be good action throughout the story. Right? Right.
4. Now that I've mentioned demons - yes, this isn't just a historical fiction novel! I love the historical setting and the paranormal mashup. Demons abound! Supernatural abilities!
3.  There is a ~murder mystery~. Did Lord Carlston kill his wife? Is this just rumor? What happened to her, in truth? You'll have to read the series to find out...
2. Speaking of Lord Carlston, well, he is a reason all by himself. Do you love tall, handsome, and broody? You haven't met a man like that until you've met Lord Carlston. Helloooo hotness.
1. Slow-burn romance. Need I say more? I love slow-burn romance. Book two has one of my all-time favorite YA lit kisses. But we were talking about book one. SLOW-BURN! Love it!

(Do yourself a favor. Pick up this series. Look, there is a giveaway on Goodreads for a copy of The Dark Days Club!)

Swoon Thursday (#293): Unchained by J. Lynn

- From the book you’re currently reading, or one you just finished, tell us what made you SWOON. What got your heart pounding, your skin tingling, and your stomach fluttering

- Try to make the swoon excerpt 140 characters (or less), if you are going to tweet about it. Use the hashtag #YABOUND when tweeting

This week, my swoon is from Unchained by J. Lynn!

"Tell me to stop." His voice was thick. "And damn it all to Hell, I will."

Her lips parted, but she didn't speak.

Julian growled low in his throat and then brought his mouth down to hers.

It had been years since she had kissed anyone. She'd been a teenager, before Baal and before she accepted the Contract. She'd forgotten how much pleasure a kiss could bring, but she never remembered being kissed like this before.

Julian claimed her lips as if her were laying stake to her soul. The possibility that he had already done so should have served as a dire warning, but she was far too immersed in the feelings Julian was working out of her. His lips were demanding, and when he tugged on her lower lip with his teeth, she yielded to him. The kiss deepened, and his tongue slid over hers. She let out a little breathless moan against his hot mouth.

- ebook, page 87

This is one of Armentrout's older adult romance novels, but it's so good! I adore Julian. The book was on sale for $0.99 recently - hope you didn't miss it!

Blog Tour and Giveaway: Keeper of the Bees by Meg Kassel

Hey y'all! Welcome to the tour for Keeper of the Bees, which is Meg Kassel's second published book. You'll recall that I LOVED Black Bird of the Gallows, and that book ended up being a year-end favorite. I'm pleased to say that I adored Keeper of the Bees!

About the Book:

Keeper of the Bees by Meg Kassel
Book two of the Black Bird of the Gallows series
Publisher: Entangled Teen
Publication Date: September 4, 2018

Official Summary:

KEEPER OF THE BEES is a tale of two teens who are both beautiful and beastly, and whose pasts are entangled in surprising and heartbreaking ways.

Dresden is cursed. His chest houses a hive of bees that he can’t stop from stinging people with psychosis-inducing venom. His face is a shifting montage of all the people who have died because of those stings. And he has been this way for centuries—since he was eighteen and magic flowed through his homeland, corrupting its people.

He follows harbingers of death, so at least his curse only affects those about to die anyway. But when he arrives in a Midwest town marked for death, he encounters Essie, a seventeen-year-old girl who suffers from debilitating delusions and hallucinations. His bees want to sting her on sight. But Essie doesn’t see a monster when she looks at Dresden.

Essie is fascinated and delighted by his changing features. Risking his own life, he holds back his bees and spares her. What starts out as a simple act of mercy ends up unraveling Dresden’s solitary life and Essie’s tormented one. Their impossible romance might even be powerful enough to unravel a centuries-old curse.

About the Author:

Meg Kassel is an author of fantasy and speculative books for young adults. A graduate of Parson's School of Design, she’s been creating stories, whether with visuals or words, since childhood. Meg is a New Jersey native who lives in a log house in the Maine woods with her husband and daughter. As a fan of ’80s cartoons, Netflix series, and ancient mythology, she has always been fascinated and inspired by the fantastic, the creepy, and the futuristic. She is the 2016 RWA Golden Heart® winner in YA and a double 2018 RITA® finalist for her debut novel, Black Bird of the Gallows.

My Thoughts:

I actually read this book a while ago and am now putting my thoughts together, so bear with me. I won't do a full review because this is a tour post, and I also can't remember some of the very specific details of the book. Probably for the better, because I don't want to give away too many details and spoil the magic.

I loved Black Bird of the Gallows, and was super excited to see that there would be a second book. This is actually a COMPANION sequel and not a direct sequel, though you will see how the books connect, once you read this one. I like how Kassel connected the stories!

I liked this book a lot. I liked the first book more - that book was so perfect - but I really liked this follow-up. It's different compared to the first book, and in good ways.

Dresden is such a sweetheart! He is cursed with having bees in his chest, always carrying the burden of the bees. He has no constant face, and no constant companions, as his venom kills. Dresden harbors guilt, secrets, and a long history. He is very cool in my opinion, very badass, and very selfless. I liked him from the start.

Essie is a tough girl, who has been through a lot and goes through a lot in this story. She suffers from delusions and hallucinations, and isn't "normal". Little does she know that her history is tied to Dresden's. Essie doesn't see Dresden as a monster, despite his monstrous being. Essie is a good person with a kind heart and was dealt a seriously bad hand in the game of life.

I loved watching these two slowly but surely fall for each other. This is a Beauty & the Beast retelling with a hint of forbidden romance, almost Romeo & Juliet/Shakespeare style. I loved the romance. It was slow-burn and forbidden and sweet.

The ending had me a little nervous, given this type of story and Dresden's history, but the book actually ended really well! Such a great ending! Thank you, Meg Kassel, for giving readers a positive, sweet conclusion to the story.

The Excerpt:

“Will I see you again, Dresden?”

My throat goes dry and raw and aching. “Do you want to?”

However she answers will be excruciating. There will be no recovering from this encounter. From the memory of her touch and her wide, trusting eyes. Good gods, from her embrace.

She nods.

I am doomed. “I’ll find you later. I’ll…” What? Knock on her door and ask her aunt if I can invite her to the movies? Not in this universe. “I will see you again, Essie. I’m not sure when.”

“I’ll look for you,” she says, finally releasing her hold on my T-shirt. “Be careful.” And she’s gone, disappearing into the woods, back toward the trail.

Blog Tour: Blood Cure by K.A. Linde

Happy Friday! We made it to the end of the week! To round off the week, I'm sharing my thoughts on Blood Cure by K.A. Linde. I loved this book, and series!

About the Book:

Blood Cure by K.A. Linde
Book Three of the Blood Type series
Publisher: Loveswept
Publication Date: August 21, 2018

Official Summary:

The stunning conclusion to the Blood Type series finds the world in chaos and turmoil with one final battle left to determine who will survive—humans or vampires.

She had the world on her shoulders. Now she has nothing.

Reyna Carpenter was twenty-one when she became a live-in blood escort for the ruthless and darkly handsome vampire Beckham Anderson. She thought this was just a small price to pay for feeding her brothers back home.

But nothing went as planned. Not even her tumultuous relationship with Beckham. And now she wonders if anything will ever be the same again.

As she finds herself in the midst of a losing rebellion, she and her trusted friends must flee from a city conquered by the vampire elite. With their plans blown to pieces and everything they knew and loved gone, their future hangs in the balance.

Despite all she has lost, Reyna must rise from the ashes, reclaim the life that was stolen—and complete her mission, once and for all.

Mini Review:

I'm going to keep this super short, to the point of vagueness, because this is a conclusion novel and the previous book did have quite a cliffhanger ending. I want to write a more thorough review several weeks after publication, to be fair. For now, you can enjoy my brief thoughts.

Usually when it comes to romance novels, I don't prefer continuous sequels (I like standalones with companion sequels), but the structure of this series really worked for me. I especially liked how quick the release dates were - we didn't have to wait years for the series to continue and end. Whew!

This conclusion novel was exciting, engrossing, and thrilling. I love how this series is so much more than a paranormal romance series. There is plenty of plot and subplot and a dark villain that will make you so angry. And yet the romance is present in every page of the book. I love how important the romance was, but I also love how the "bigger picture" - saving the world - was also important.

In terms of Beckham and Reyna... what I will say is that there is a reason why this book's cover has two people on it. I love this pair and I love how sexy they are together, as well as how in sync they are. They are a lovely couple! They have plenty of obstacles to overcome, and they have their own problems, but each obstacle makes them more solid together.

This book ends well, so don't worry about that! I'll stop with that. This series is so worth reading, especially now that you can binge-read it. Go forth and indulge!
