Waiting on Wednesday (#218): The Speaker by Traci Chee

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week, I'm featuring:

The Speaker by Traci Chee
Book Two of the Sea of Ink and Gold series
Publisher: G.P. Putnam's Sons Books for Young Readers
Publication Date: September 12, 2017

Summary (from Goodreads):

The sequel to the critically-acclaimed New York Times bestselling fantasy The Reader, “highly recommended for fans of Cornelia Funke's Inkheart and female-powered adventures.”—School Library Journal

Having barely escaped the clutches of the Guard, Sefia and Archer are back on the run, slipping into the safety of the forest to tend to their wounds and plan their next move. Haunted by painful memories, Archer struggles to overcome the trauma of his past with the impressors, whose cruelty plagues him whenever he closes his eyes. But when Sefia and Archer happen upon a crew of impressors in the wilderness, Archer finally finds a way to combat his nightmares: by hunting impressors and freeing the boys they hold captive.

With Sefia’s help, Archer travels across the kingdom of Deliene rescuing boys while she continues to investigate the mysterious Book and secrets it contains. But the more battles they fight, the more fights Archer craves, until his thirst for violence threatens to transform him from the gentle boy Sefia knows to a grim warrior with a cruel destiny. As Sefia begins to unravel the threads that connect Archer’s fate to her parents’ betrayal of the Guard so long ago, she and Archer must figure out a way to subvert the Guard’s plans before they are ensnared in a war that will pit kingdom against kingdom, leaving their future and the safety of the entire world hanging in the balance.

No cover for The Speaker yet, but this is the first book in the series:

I loved The Reader! And I love that cover too, so I really hope the covers of the series don't change. More to the point - hopefully The Speaker is just as captivating as The Reader

  11. Cool cover for the first book. I get bummed when authors or publisher's change the look of covers in a series. Start a good match then the rest will be different.

    1. I get sad too! I feel like this series is going to have a cover change, just given how late the cover is being revealed. It should have been revealed by now, you know? Fall 2017 covers are out, for the major publishers. Ah well!

  16. The Reader was one of my favorite books last year! I love that you didn't wait for the cover -- I'm so excited for this book, too! I hope there's not going to be a cover change -- not only will my series not match (grrrrr), but I love the cover of the The Reader so much. Awesome pick, Alyssa :) Have a great week and happy reading!

    1. Oh yeah, cover or no cover, this one was getting featured! I go in chronological order, so I reached this particular publication and the cover still hasn't been revealed. :/ Whatever, I'm excited nonetheless. :D Thank you!

  19. I have blogger shame for admitting that I haven't read The Reader yet! Everyone seems to LOVE it! I love the cover as well. Normally faces on covers are a bit weird to me, but this one works so well. Great pick Alyssa! And thanks for visiting my WoW earlier!

Have a wonderful rest of your week!

  21. I ended up DNFing The Reader about 3/4 of the way through. It was just a bit too long and too much "LOTR amounts of walking" XD But I hope you enjoy the sequel, and I'm curious to see what the cover will look like! :)

  23. I've seen The Reader around, but never really read its description before. It sounds good. Also, don't you hate when a book you want to feature as your WoW doesn't have a cover yet? It makes me so sad...

    1. I honestly get so annoyed! And then I try to shift things around but I pick in chronological order so it doesn't always work! By now, this book should have a cover. -_-

  26. I was just thinking the same thing about these covers---I hope they keep the design the same, especially because I don't really care for the trend Penguin covers seem to be following this coming season (of the few recent reveals I've seen anyhow). :( I never did get around to reading The Reader but it sounded like a gorgeous story!

    1. I am honestly expecting the worst from Penguin with every single series, it seems. Every time a book #2 is going to publish, they change the entire look. Sometimes the new covers are even better (though rarely) but it's so frustrating and annoying!

I could rant about that for days! But in any case, I can't wait to read this book. ;)

  27. YAASSS! I loved The Reader too! I am hopeful that book 2 is as good (or better!!!) and I can't wait to see that cover reveal! :) I'm also hoping for the same depth of puzzles and marginalia to be in book 2... :)

    1. Oh my goodness, the puzzles and marginalia (that is such a fun word) were SO great in The Reader!

  28. I think the The Reader is one of those books that slipped under my attention. I recognize the cover, but I have no recollection of reading the plot summary... I hope the sequel lives up to your high expectations!!
