Waiting on Wednesday (#283): Wildcard by Marie Lu

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week, I'm featuring:

Wildcard by Marie Lu
Book Two of the Warcross series
Publisher: G.P. Putnam's Sons Books for Young Readers
Publication Date: September 18, 2018

Summary (from Goodreads):

Emika Chen barely made it out of the Warcross Championships alive. Now that she knows the truth behind Hideo's new NeuroLink algorithm, she can no longer trust the one person she's always looked up to, who she once thought was on her side.

Determined to put a stop to Hideo's grim plans, Emika and the Phoenix Riders band together, only to find a new threat lurking on the neon-lit streets of Tokyo. Someone's put a bounty on Emika's head, and her sole chance for survival lies with Zero and the Blackcoats, his ruthless crew. But Emika soon learns that Zero isn't all that he seems--and his protection comes at a price.

Caught in a web of betrayal, with the future of free will at risk, just how far will Emika go to take down the man she loves?

Okay confession time! I have not read Warcross yet. I started to read it last year but when I saw so many people moaning about the ending, I decided to wait until book two was published. So by default, I'm very excited about Wildcard!

This week, my swoon is from The Midnight Star by Marie Lu!

Then he closes the distance between us, and hip lips touch mine. Around us is nothing but the sound of water lapping gently against the overgrown stone and the faint glow from the moss. His hand trails along my bare back, tracing the curve of my spine. He pulls me close so that our chests are pressed together. His kiss goes from my lips to my chin, and there he plants them lower and lower, creating a gentle path along my neck. I sigh, wanting nothing more in this moment than us, content with staying here forever. [...] My breaths come in ragged gasps. Gradually, I notice that we have made our way to the edge of the pool, where he presses me tightly against the stone. One of his hands tangles in my hair, drawing me forward to him. His kisses return to my lips, move urgent now, and I fall into them eagerly. A low groan rumbles in his throat. I wonder, for a wild second, if he will take us further, and my heart pounds in my chest.

What I Liked:

***SPOILER-FREE REVIEW. There may be spoilers if you haven't read The Young Elites or The Rose Society, but you're safe in terms of The Midnight Star.***

The Midnight Star is an intense, dark, and thrilling conclusion to a fascinating and utterly unique fantasy series. I am blown away by Marie Lu's storytelling, her writing, and her stories in general. I don't typically read books so dark (at least in Young Adult), but I couldn't resist this series. And I'm glad I didn't - it was a magnificent and heartbreaking trilogy.

This final novel starts about a year or so after the end of The Rose Society (so it's been about two years since the beginning of The Young Elites). Adelina is suffering from the voices and hallucinations and nightmares, even more so than usual. But she's also very successful in her conquests - she is now the Queen of the Sealands, and she wants more. But every newly conquered territory fails to have what Adelina is looking for - her sister, who fled. And every new territory brings more and more assassination attempts, and more cruelty from Adelina. But there is a growing danger that is bigger than conquering lands and finding Violetta, and Adelina will find herself in the middle of the problem. To stop this growing chaos, she must learn to trust the Daggers that she has grown to hate. Sacrifices must be made, lives must be lost, and darkness will threaten to consume Adelina and the world, once and for all.

Upon finishing this book, I was speechless. My heart hurt, but it was also full to bursting. This book is not a happy and fluffy novel. There is only one way that this book could end (with variations), and it could not involve a cookie-cutter perfect HEA. I love how Lu put everything together, how she led readers to the ending, how everything fell apart and then bonded again.

Adelina gets more and more... villainous, shall we say? She's an antihero, a villain in this series. She's a cruel queen; she makes the laws very lenient for the marked, but harsh to the point of death for the unmarked. For all the times that she was hurt by the unmarked, she wants them to suffer by the hands of the marked. Adelina has become a ruthless tyrant, and everything fears her, hates her, and/or wants to kill her. Those who serve her, can they be trusted?

And yet, even though Adelina is quite the villain, we can clearly see just how human she once was, and still is. In her heart, she is doing what she thinks is right, but she is not naive or misguided. She wants to do right by the marked, which means punishing the unmarked (in her mind). We see her struggling with her hallucinations, with her unstable powers, with her feelings for Magiano and her grip on humanity. Honestly, as tyrannical and cruel as Adelina was in this book, she was also extremely human. My heart broke for her over and over. She deteriorates slowly but surely, in terms of her power (and her mind, a little), and it's sad to see how she lets her Elite power and her political power get to her.

This book is told in Adelina's first-person POV, as well as Raffaele's third-person POV. There are one or two chapters that are written in another character's third-person POV, but Adelina's first-person and Raffaele's third-person POV are the most important and most prevalent ones. I loved reading from Adelina's POV, but I also liked seeing another perspective. This mode of storytelling isn't my favorite (dual POV is fine but switching from first- to third-person is a little weird), but I think it works well in this trilogy.

The cast of secondary characters is relatively the same as in the previous books, with a few new ones here and there. I loved Magiano - he is probably my favorite character in the book. I need to reread The Young Elites and see how he came about in the series (I remember him from The Rose Society but not The Young Elites). Violetta is important in this book, but not present all the time. I didn't love her or hate her. Magiano and Sergio, are two of the best characters in this book.

I love Lu's writing, and the world-building of this book. Lu has a quality of writing that isn't quite lyrical, but it flows so well and has a rhythm to it. And her craftsmanship is so perfect - the world-building, the characters, the setting, the plot. Seriously, I'm having trouble finding flaws (not that I'm looking for them, specifically!).

There is romance in this book, and it's probably the strongest and most shippiest in this book than the other two. If you've read The Young Elites and The Rose Society, then you know the pair... Adelina and Magiano. There are some really sweet scenes in this book, which you wouldn't expect because Adelina is so ruthless. Magiano loves her, and while Adelina is purposeful in her cruelty, she loves him too.

I won't say a word about the ending, or even the plot and major events leading up to the climax... just know that you will be interested and hanging on to the edge of your seat and wanting to know how things will end. The ending crept up on me and I knew it was going to happen. But I liked how it happened. Lu knows how to deliver a powerful ending that is equal parts dark and light.

What I Did Not Like:

This isn't something negative about the book, but more of a suggestion - I highly recommend doing a reread of The Young Elites and The Rose Society (or at least The Rose Society) before reading this one. Lu does a good job of getting us back into the story (with recall and whatnot), but it would be immensely helpful to reread the books!

Would I Recommend It:

I highly recommend this book, and series in general. It is a very dark series (seriously though. Adelina is all kinds of cruel and cold), so if you're not into antiheroes and such, then maybe don't go for this one. And if you need a perfect HEA, then maybe avoid the series. The ending is good though, and it's exactly what the series needed. In any case, this is a really well-written fantasy series, and one that I'll be thinking about for a long time.

Rating:

4.5 stars. I'm rounding down to 4 stars (I have to, given certain things that I liked but didn't like but can't say here because spoilers), but I really enjoyed this book. I think it's my favorite of the series? It's hard to say. All of the books were so good!

Review: The Rose Society by Marie Lu

The Rose Society by Marie Lu
Book Two of The Young Elites trilogy
Publisher: G.P. Putnam's Sons Books for Young Readers
Publication Date: October 13, 2015
Rating: 4 stars
Source: ARC gifted by a friend (thank you, C!)

Summary (from Goodreads):

From New York Times bestselling author Marie Lu comes the second book in the exhilarating Young Elites series

Once upon a time, a girl had a father, a prince, a society of friends. Then they betrayed her, and she destroyed them all.

Adelina Amouteru’s heart has suffered at the hands of both family and friends, turning her down the bitter path of revenge. Now known and feared as the White Wolf, she and her sister flee Kenettra to find other Young Elites in the hopes of building her own army of allies. Her goal: to strike down the Inquisition Axis, the white-cloaked soldiers that murdered her love, the Crown Prince Enzo Valenciano.

But Adelina is no heroine. Her powers, fed only by fear and hate, have started to grow beyond her control. She does not trust her newfound Elite friends. Teren Santoro, leader of the Inquisition, wants her dead. And her former friends, Raffaele and the Dagger Society, want to stop her thirst for vengeance. Adelina struggles to cling to the good within her. But how can someone be good, when her very existence depends on darkness?

What I Liked:

WOW this book was dark. Not as crazy dark as Menagerie was (that was an adult book though - and highly disturbing, more than anything), but super dark for YA. Adelina is a villain in all sense of the word. I love how far Marie Lu goes with the character development, although the direction is quite... frightening. THIS BOOK!

Adelina and her sister Violetta are on the run, as Adelina was banished from the Dagger Society after Enzo's death. Adelina begins to amass Elite allies of her own, looking to destroy the Inquisition Ais, and take the Kenettran throne from Queen Giulietta, Enzo's sister. Adelina is driven by revenge and hatred, and it's getting harder for her to stop wanting to make everyone hurt as much as she does.

Let me start off by saying that I remembered little from The Young Elites. I absolutely adored that book, but hey, I read it exactly a year ago. That was a long time ago! And yet, I remember that ending. THAT ENDING. I was super crushed over it, and knocked off a star because of the ending. But the good thing is, this book (The Rose Society) is written in such a way that you can get right back into the world with no struggle! So don't worry if you don't remember much!

Adelina. Adelina, Adelina. She gets even darker and more twisted in this book. Her power as an illusion creator grows, and she is able to bend people's perceptions to her will. There is a part of her that enjoys making bad people suffer, making her enemies suffer, even killing people. Adelina is a villain in this story, even if there are other villains. I can't even say if her cause is noble - she's trying to overthrow the Queen of Kenettra so SHE can have the throne. It's not about greed, but vengeance, and Adelina will stop at nothing to get it.

All of that being said, Adelina isn't a completely cold and cruel person. She is definitely cold. But there are pockets of time in this book where you recognize the humanity in her. But most of the time, she is driven and ambitious and heartless. I like Adelina! I think she's gone off some deep end and probably won't return from it, but I like her. I can't see a happy ending for her though. She is so damaged, mentally, it's scary! She is a frightening character - I'd run far away if I came across her! Yet I think I like her. She is waaaay ambitious.

There are new characters, old characters, returning characters. Violetta is a constant and unchanging presence in this book - I like her a lot now. Magiano is an Elite, a new ally of Adelina's, whose power is quite intriguing. There are other powerful Elites that Adelina enlists, and it's remarkable to see them work together - though it's greed that is driving most of them. I really like Magiano! He reminds me of Kaz Brekker from Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo.

There is never a dull moment in this book! It is over four hundred pages, but the story flies by. Once I started reading, I couldn't stop. It is fascinating and chilling to see Adelina develop into this heartless, ruthless character. And the major plot twist is... woah. Everything from book one makes sense, why Lu would do certain things. I won't say anything more specific, but WOAH.

Romance. Hmm. This is something I don't want to talk about too specifically. If you haven't read The Young Elites, you probably should. For those who have, you know the ending. I will say that there is romance in this book, and it is unexpected in two ways. You'll have to read the book two find out why! I personally liked one direction of the romance. The other direction is scary, in a run-for-your-life way.

I really, really enjoyed this book. I loved the addition of new characters, the reappearances of the characters in book one (from the Dagger Society, Teren Santoro, etc.). I loved seeing Adelina's character development progress (twisted as it was), the pain she is dealing with, how she suffers. There is so much pain and suffering internally, so you can't help but feel for Adelina. I am very curious to see what Lu will do in book three! I have a feeling nothing will end well...

What I Did Not Like:

You know, I can't think of anything specifically? I can't shake this feeling of impending doom and a tragic ending at the end of this series in general, which is very unsettling. But that shows how well the author is setting the scene, even if I don't think I will like the scene (at the end of book three, hypothetically)? I just hate feeling unsettled, if that makes sense. It's nothing specific, and technically not a dislike. There wasn't anything that I can think of that I could point a finger directly at. Yay!

Would I Recommend It:

So highly recommended! This new series by Lu is definitely a step up from the Legend series (and I thought Legend was great). I loved The Young Elites, and I think I loved this one just as much! Don't be intimidated to read this book, as there is no sequel slump here.

Rating:

4.5 stars -> rounded down to 4 stars (because of that unsettled feeling I have, really). I cannot wait to read book three! Though I'm feeling how I'm feeling about Pierce Brown's upcoming publication, Morning Star: scared of my mind. These two series are bound to end poorly! (Please prove me wrong, authors, I beg you...)

Promo and Giveaway: The Rose Society by Marie Lu

Yo people! Happy (holiday) Monday! Holiday in the USA, the last one for a while! Today I'm participating in a really cool promotion with Penguin, in support of the publication of The Rose Society by Marie Lu! I've read this book and absolutely LOVED it. You can win a copy today!

VILLAIN SQUAD

Today, I will share my villain identity with you all! When the publicist emailed me with this promotional blog post idea, I immediately thought of a few things. What would fit a villain Alyssa best though?

Well. Everyone, Alyssa is no more. Meet...

THE BLACKSMITH

With the power of transmutation!

(Don't you love it?!)

Transmutation has a lot of definitions, depending on what branch of science you're looking at. Ultimately, my villainous self is able to control and manipulate chemical elements (like metals) and convert it into other substances. Changing things (particularly, elements and metals) from one state to another! Some have transmutation as transforming one object into a completely different one (like, say, a cucumber to a TV. Weird, right?). That to me makes no sense because there needs to be shared properties (like atomic structure and whatnot) for one thing to turn into another? But anyway, this is all fictional so I will can the science!

Fits, right? Sciency Alyssa is sciency, especially on the chemistry and physical side of science. Transmutation and alchemy were hand-in-hand, in the medieval days!

I chose "The Blacksmith" because they are kickbutt creators, morphing metal into something deadly.

So... watch out, yo. The Blacksmith is in town. Melting your phones and blowing up steel pipes and things and obliterating bridges.

Meet my Villain Squad!

- Nikki, Fiction Freak

Also:

- Will Turner, Pirates of the Caribbean: yes, he does not have a "superpower". But he is the BEST blacksmith out there, and a savvy pirate!
- Ciere, Illusive by Emily Lloyd-Jones: an illusionist, like Adelina! It's good to have one on your side ;)
- Literally anyone from The Darkest Minds series by Alexandra Bracken: some Blues and Oranges would be good. Check out this graphic:

(From the In the Afterlight promo!)

Taylor Swift has nothing on this group! ;D

Review: The Young Elites by Marie Lu

The Young Elites by Marie Lu
Book One of The Young Elites series
Publisher: Putnam Juvenile
Publisher: October 7, 2014
Rating: 4 stars
Source: ARC sent by the publisher

Summary (from Goodreads):

I am tired of being used, hurt, and cast aside.

Adelina Amouteru is a survivor of the blood fever. A decade ago, the deadly illness swept through her nation. Most of the infected perished, while many of the children who survived were left with strange markings. Adelina’s black hair turned silver, her lashes went pale, and now she has only a jagged scar where her left eye once was. Her cruel father believes she is a malfetto, an abomination, ruining their family’s good name and standing in the way of their fortune. But some of the fever’s survivors are rumored to possess more than just scars—they are believed to have mysterious and powerful gifts, and though their identities remain secret, they have come to be called the Young Elites.

Teren Santoro works for the king. As Leader of the Inquisition Axis, it is his job to seek out the Young Elites, to destroy them before they destroy the nation. He believes the Young Elites to be dangerous and vengeful, but it’s Teren who may possess the darkest secret of all.

Enzo Valenciano is a member of the Dagger Society. This secret sect of Young Elites seeks out others like them before the Inquisition Axis can. But when the Daggers find Adelina, they discover someone with powers like they’ve never seen.

Adelina wants to believe Enzo is on her side, and that Teren is the true enemy. But the lives of these three will collide in unexpected ways, as each fights a very different and personal battle. But of one thing they are all certain: Adelina has abilities that shouldn’t belong in this world. A vengeful blackness in her heart. And a desire to destroy all who dare to cross her.

It is my turn to use. My turn to hurt.

What I Liked:

Wooaahhh. Marie Lu should write fantasy. I mean, her dystopia series, the Legend trilogy, was excellent, but this FANTASY NOVEL. I am seriously impressed. Not that you shouldn't be impressed anyway, because it's Marie Lu, and the woman a is really talented writer to begin with.

Adelina murdered someone, and she will be burned on the stake for this. She is one of the malfetto, a survivor of the blood fever, with some sort of marking and strange abilities. Her marking is the scar where her left eye should be - the doctor cut her eye out to save her from the fever. Her abilities - she never found out, until she killed someone. Rescued by the Dagger Society, led by Enzo Valeciano, Adelina must decide if she wants to support this rebellion group, or help the Inquisitor, who has her younger sister.

The synopsis is super creepy, and super spot on. "It is my turn to use. My turn to hurt." That line is PERFECT. It totally fits this book to the T. Adelina is used and hurt. Her own father treats her like less than nothing, because she is a malfetto, imperfect, scarred. He physically hurts her, like breaking her finger, but he also mentally and emotionally hurts her. When Adelina is rescued by Enzo and the Dagger Society (other malfetto with abilities), she does everything she can to learn as much as possible.

And the others in the Dagger Society know this. Raffaele, a beautiful male courtesan, has the ability to sense malfetto energy, and he knows that she is powerful. He urges Enzo (the Dagger leader) to kill Adelina, because he knows that her power is dark and bitter. Raffaele and Adelina become friends, but Raffaele is truly afraid of Adelina. Of course Enzo doesn't kill Adelina. But perhaps he should have...

This book has a seriously dark tone to it. Adelina has a lot of hatred and darkness in her past - as do all of the Young Elites (malfetto with abilities), but she also has raw power and ambition. Enzo wants her to fight with the Dagger Society because she would be a huge asset. If she can hone her abilities. She can create illusions.

I like Adelina. She is twisted and selfless and dark and complex - there is a light and dark side to her, which sounds cliche, but it isn't. The character development of Adelina is excellent. Enzo is already a static character, so I don't see too much character development in him, but I definitely liked him. He reminded me of Rowan in Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas. Enzo has a hard, steely quality to him, with no room for arguments or contradictions. The supporting characters, like Raffaele and Violetta, the Spider, the Windwalker... I love the set of characters that Lu has created. She is a master at character construction and development.

There is romance in this novel, to an extent. It's not dominant or overwhelming, and honestly, it's quite strange, but it's there. So, for those of you that can't read a YA novel without romance, relax, there's romance in this book. For those of you who like it when the romance isn't the central part of the plot (like me), that's basically how this romance goes.

Lu's world-building is awesomeeee. I felt like I was living in Dalia, experiencing what Adelina was seeing or thinking or doing, etc. Lu is really good at describing a situation without boring readers, or setting up the scene without providing an info-dump. I love the imagery, especially! The Italian influence is awesome. The names, setting, masks, GONDOLAS... love the Italian influence.

This book is written in several points-of-view. Adelina's is in first person. Teren's (I did not mention him on purpose), Raffaele's, and Enzo's are in third person. This is a neat way to switch up things. It keeps you on your toes, so you must follow which character's perspective it is.

To round it all off... the ending was INSANE. Upon finishing the novel, I mentioned on Goodreads that I knocked a star off for one specific aspect of the ending. Trust me, you'll know what I mean. I'm not happy with this one aspect, but I suppose it's an excellent hook so that readers will keep reading. The cliffhangers... they kill me!

What I Did Not Like:

Like I said before, one specific aspect of the ending knocked this book down to four stars. It was well on its way to five stars until that ONE BIT. But it's an excellent hook. I loved this book and was already extremely excited to read the second book anyway, but even if I had hated this book... I would have wanted to know what happens next. I wonder how Lu will salvage this situation...

Would I Recommend It:

Yes! Totally! Fantasy fan or not, you'll want to catch this one. Marie Lu is an excellent writer, and her books totally live up to the hype. She has a penchant for horribly twisted endings though, so watch out.

Rating:

4.5 stars -> rounded down to 4 stars. I cannot wait to read book two! I want to see more from the romance (hehe), and more from the "big picture", the overarching series plot. Here's hoping it'll be even more epic than book one!

Waiting on Wednesday (#30): Champion by Marie Lu

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week, I'm featuring:

Champion by Marie Lu
Book Three of the Legend series
Publisher: Putnam Juvenile
Publication Date: November 5, 2013

Summary (from Goodreads):

He is a Legend.
She is a Prodigy.
Who will be Champion?

June and Day have sacrificed so much for the people of the Republic—and each other—and now their country is on the brink of a new existence. June is back in the good graces of the Republic, working within the government’s elite circles as Princeps Elect while Day has been assigned a high level military position. But neither could have predicted the circumstances that will reunite them once again. Just when a peace treaty is imminent, a plague outbreak causes panic in the Colonies, and war threatens the Republic’s border cities. This new strain of plague is deadlier than ever, and June is the only one who knows the key to her country’s defense. But saving the lives of thousands will mean asking the one she loves to give up everything he has. With heart-pounding action and suspense, Marie Lu’s bestselling trilogy draws to a stunning conclusion.

AH! I love Marie Lu and this series! I can't believe it's coming to an end... *sniffles*
