***Warning: this is an adult book, and for the eyes of mature readers***

Summary (from Goodreads):

Lane Gallagher wants Delilah Moore—bad.

He’s imagined the sexy brunette in his bed more times than he can count.

She’s everything he’s ever wanted, but the only problem is . . .

She’s his brother’s ex.

For years, the stoic sheriff’s deputy has fantasized about the sweet, bubbly dance teacher who stirs his deepest desires. But Lane’s too loyal to ever move in on forbidden territory and he knows that while he can look, he definitely can’t touch. Fighting his attraction to Delilah is nearly impossible, but the infuriating—and incredibly sexy—woman seems determined to drive him crazy.

And she’s bringing him to his knees. One smoldering kiss at a time.

What I Liked:

I liked several of Karen Erickson's Brazen novels (specifically, the Game For It series), and I've read some of her books under her pseudonym, Monica Murphy. So when I was presented the opportunity to help reveal the cover of Smolder, I jumped at the chance, and found that I was also interested in reading the book. Usually I do not read books in which we're dealing with a girl who dated one brother and is interested in another brother. But that aspect bothered me a lot less than I expected, and I really liked the book as a whole.

Delilah has been throwing hints - and herself - at Lane Gallagher for quite some time now. Both of them are really attracted to each other, but Lane won't make a move. Part of it is because she used to date West, Lane's younger brother. But there is so much more, and Delilah wants to be there for Lane, if he'll let her.

The synopsis of this book makes it seem like Lane is holding out on Delilah (and himself, and all of Wildwood) because Delilah used to date West, Lane's younger brother, and Lane wouldn't dare date a girl his brother used to date. That's actually not really the case - well, it's not as bad and as big as the synopsis makes it. YES, Lane doesn't want to make a move on Delilah, out of brotherly loyalty and his gentlemanly values (seriously, Lane is quite the gentleman). But there is more to it - Lane has commitment issues that go back to his childhood.

Usually I don't go near books that involve a girl and two brothers, even if it's one brother dated in the past, one now. And let's be real, the synopsis of this book makes it seem like the whole Delilah-dated-West thing is a deal-breaker in this book. It's not, and here's why: Delilah and West dated in high school, when they were young teens. They never had sex, they never had butterflies or cute feelings, or anything like that. Delilah was interested in Lane even then, and she and West didn't date for long at all. And it was during high school.

So, you see why I was fine with the past brother dating thing. Because it was a lot less of a thing than the synopsis made it out to be. Phew!

Lane, oh Lane. He reminded me of Cal, from Megan Erickson's Dirty Thoughts (no, the authors are not related). Lane is irritable and grumpy, a bit of a loner, though a sexy one. He's the oldest of four siblings (three boys and a girl), and he's the one who takes care of everyone else. When they need comfort, support, financial help, advice... Lane is there. The Gallagher parents have a terrible relationship, and Lane holds it down for his siblings. He's also a workaholic; as a deputy sheriff, he is protective of Wildwood, and wants to do his job more than well. Lane is out saving the world... but no one is really there to take care of Lane!

Delilah has been half in love with Lane since they were really young. Even when "dating" West (I put that in quotes, because they never really had feelings for each other, never had sex, barely made it to second base... and this was years ago), Delilah was more intrigued by Lane. Years later, she's thrown herself at him so many times, but he won't act on them. I love that Delilah steps up and persists, every time Lane makes an excuse or turns tail or sends mixed signals. I love that she fights for herself, for him, and never gives them up. I love that she took initiative and never gave up, when it came to Lane. Delilah has got to be one of my favorite heroines, for this.

The romance is pretty steamy! We go into this book knowing that Lane and Delilah are really attracted to each other and have feelings for each other, but they haven't acted on these feelings nor have the told each other. But when Lane finally caves... *fans self* Under all that protective alpha gentleman, Lane is a dirty-talking, dominant alpha. And Delilah, as accommodating and eager to please as she is, is no shrinking violet. The pair in bed together is hot!

I like how little drama there was in this book! Even the climax scene was pretty drama-free. Lane has a lot to work through, with his mother's health up in the air, and an arsonist on the loose, and his own personal problems. But in the end, he is brave. *happy sigh*

This was a fairly quick (but not short), sizzling, and sweet read! I don't think I'll be reading Ignite but I definitely want to continue the series and read Torch. These men in uniform are totally my type!

What I Did Not Like:

Oh, you know, the usual "it could have been longer", "there could have been more sex scenes" <- things you'll usually hear from me, when it comes to romance novels. This book felt fairly short, probably around 250 pages in a print book? And I think there were only two written sex scenes (one or two more may have been implied). *stares at author*

Would I Recommend It:

If you like adult contemporary romance, especially involving men in uniform, this is a series for you! I have a soft spot for men in uniform, which is nothing new. This was an impulse read for me, and I'm glad I liked it as much as I did!

Rating:

4 stars. Torch is the next book, featuring Tate, one of Lane's friends, and Wren, Lane's little sister. I'm curious about Tate! He wasn't really in Smolder, but Wren was big-time. Squee!

She also writes as NYT and USA Today bestselling author Monica Murphy.

The Excerpt:

Lane drove the streets of Wildwood in his deputy patrol car just under the speed limit, his gaze everywhere, his mind focused on only one thing:

Making sure his little hometown was safe.

Safe from crime, safe from reckless teenagers, safe from careless tourists, and safe from a ruthless arsonist who seemed hell-bent on destroying Wildwood, one little annoying fire after another.

He frowned. Had to take back that last remark. The restaurant fire could’ve been a tragedy. So many people had been in there when the fire started. Eyewitness accounts mentioned just how chaotic it had become when everyone tried to escape at once. His sister had been in there, as well as her friend Harper. And . . .

Delilah.

Now he flat-out scowled, wishing Delilah wouldn’t creep into his thoughts. She was always there, sitting in the back of his mind, taunting him.

Teasing him.

He’d stopped by her dance studio like he couldn’t help himself. He’d known Wren wasn’t there, but Delilah’s car had been parked out front. He’d walked in like a man possessed, needing just a glimpse after not having seen her since the day of the restaurant fire.

When he held her in his arms, relieved to find her safe.

When he’d been so damn close to kissing her.

When he’d shoved her away with a curt, “Glad you’re okay,” and gone about his business, reminding himself over and over he shouldn’t want her.

But he did.

Avoiding her never worked. He’d catch glimpses of her here and there—the town was too small and their circle of friends too tight—but he’d tried his best. Focused on work, which was his first true love. The fact that she distracted him so wholly scared the hell out of him most of the time.

And then there were the other times when all he could think about was seeing her. Making her smile or even making her mad, it didn’t matter. As long as he could stare at her, even for just a little bit, that was all that mattered.

He’d entered the dance studio and her scent lingered in the air, making his body stiffen. Hearing her voice call out had made him close his eyes so he could savor it and he’d turned around, not wanting her to see his face when she finally came out to greet him. Still wasn’t prepared when he turned and saw her.

That little bra top thing she wore hid nothing. So much skin on display, though he was sort of mad her legs were covered up. They were her best asset, and he’d imagined those long, lean legs of hers wrapped around his hips more than once. It had taken everything in him to keep his gaze glued on her pretty, pissed-off face and not blatantly check her out like he wanted.

She was angry with him because he wouldn’t make a move, but he couldn’t. She’d been with West a long time ago and he didn’t poach off his brothers. Yeah, yeah, West had moved on with Harper and they made a perfect couple. They seemed perfectly in love. Perfectly happy. He knew West wouldn’t give a shit if he made a move on Delilah.

But there was something about the woman that flat out scared him. She was—intense. Sexy. Smart as hell. Funny. She had no qualms showing her feelings. Meaning that most of the time she was a stressed-out, sexually frustrated woman with a grudge when they were around each other. Not that he could blame her.

She made him feel all kinds of sexually frustrated too. He hadn’t been this well acquainted with his hand since he was a teenager . . .

Pushing all thoughts of Delilah out of his brain as best he could, he refocused on his drive as he headed toward the outskirts of town, near the north end of Wildwood Lake. Spots of the mountainous landscape had been left scorched and black, a result of the latest fire set by the arsonist.

He was ramping up his activity, and the townspeople were starting to notice.

And damn it, Lane wished he could make the fires stop. But he couldn’t. Worse, he couldn’t wrap his head around the arsonist’s motives. Why was this happening?

Did arson ever make sense though? Was there ever a rational reason that made people go, “Oh, I get why he burned the entire town down”?

That would be a no. He could wrap his head around an owner burning his building down for insurance purposes. It was a bad idea, and an illegal one too, but still. He got it.

But burning down random buildings and pieces of land just for the hell of it? That made zero sense. He didn’t like it. Made him feel like he was at war with an anonymous enemy. Meaning he could trust no one.

It could be someone he knew.

Someone he liked.

Someone he trusted.

And that possibility really pissed him off.

Review: Game for Marriage by Karen Erickson

Game for Marriage by Karen Erickson
Book One of the Game For It series
Publisher: Brazen
Publication Date: January 11, 2013
Rating: 4 stars
Source: Copy from Amazon

***Warning: this is an adult book, and for the eyes of mature readers***

Summary (from Goodreads):

He’s going in deep to make her his…

Struggling artist Sheridan Harper never imagined she’d spend a sizzling night with Jared Quinn, the smoking-hot star quarterback of her local professional football team, the San Jose Hawks. And she’s even more shocked when Jared’s publicist offers her a proposition: a fake marriage to keep Jared out of the gossip mags. Being that close to Jared would be too tempting, so to protect her heart, she insists on secretly including a clause forbidding sex between them.

Jared just wants to keep his starting QB job and keep it in San Jose. His reputation as a ladies’ man has landed him in the headlines one too many times, but there’s something about his kind, passionate new wife that tempts him beyond reason. Any sort of intimacy between them is completely forbidden, but as their bodies fall in deep, will their hearts follow suit?

What I Liked:

YAY for more Brazen novels! I was planning on reading a different book for today's review, but I was in the mood for a super steamy romance novel. Brazen books rarely let me down. I liked Erickson's Game for Trouble, which is book two of this series. It was interesting how I read the second book - Willow's story - before this one. I was like, I recognize the names Willow and Nick... so some of the characters were already familiar. I liked this book even more than I liked Game for Trouble!

Jared's reputation is slowly deteriorating, thanks to several ill-timed photos and false rumors. As a  star NFL quarterback, he has talent, but the new owner of the team wants him to clean up his act. When he meets Sheridan at a fair, the team's publicist dreams up a perfect solution to Jared's problems. Sheridan and Jared could get married, live as a married couple for a while, and Jared's reputation would be secured - and Sheridan would have plenty of money to bail her business out of the red. A perfect, tantalizing, steamy arrangement...

This book starts off sizzling and picks up steam (all puns intended hehe). Jared and Sheridan meet, and the chemistry sparks between them immediately. They can't keep their hands off each other, and one things leads to another, and the same night, they've gotten seriously intimate. The next day, Jared's publicist (and Jared) paid Sheridan a visit at her studio, and make her the offer. Jared feels so bad, but somehow, Sheridan agrees. They get married, she moves into his giant home, and that's that. Oh, but wait, there's a catch - Sheridan asked her lawyer to sneak in a no-sex clause for the duration of the marriage, and Jared has to agree. But the two of them have really hot chemistry, so you and I both know that line is going to be toed. And possibly some.

I love the banter and tension between Jared and Sheridan. The no-sex clause doesn't stop Jared from teasing Sheridan, and doesn't stop Sheridan from wanting to take back the clause. The foreplay is alive and sizzling throughout the book, until things happen. Because you know they will. Erickson definitely knows how to build a steamy romance, and keep the romance alive after the characters come alive and come together.

I liked Sheridan a lot. I feel like I could identify with her - she's quiet and a bit shy and sometimes lost in her head. But she's not a naive dreamer - she has ambitions and dreams, and works hard for what she has. But she's also bold when pushed, and Jared definitely pushes her.

I liked Jared a lot too. He's a very dedicated football player. I really like that passion towards anything, but it really comes out in a man and his sport. Apparently that's totally my type (driven athlete), but hey, they're usually in FANTASTIC shape. Exhibit A (Jared)! But he's more than a hot body and pretty face - he's sweet and caring and diligent.

The story is lovely to read, even though I'm not usually a fan of the stories built on deception (a fake marriage). I like how Erickson constructs Jared and Sheridan's story, showing readers the characters, their passions, their relationship. Erickson handles the climax and ending very well, in my opinion. It's not extravagant or too cliche, in my opinion, and even involves the sports plot. I'm quite pleased with this romance novel!

What I Did Not Like:

I have no immediate complaints! It's a four-star read for me, but there was nothing that really stuck out to me that I didn't like.

Would I Recommend It:

To all romance lovers that want a steamy romance, smart and witty character, and the ever-important HEA, definitely go for Erickson's novels. This is an excellent start to a great series. I wish I had read this one first, but I like that I read the first two books in the series out of order.

Rating:

4 stars -> more like 4.5 stars. I might read the third novel in the series - Foley wasn't a favorite character of mine, but he was definitely an interesting one. Plus I love Erickson's romance novels!

Summary (from Goodreads):

He’ll play dirty to get what he wants… Willow Cavanaugh would be happy if she never saw cocky football star Nick Hamilton again. Sure, their fling was the hottest she’d had, but he’s way too much of a playboy to settle down with one woman. Plus, she’s got her heart set on a piece of real estate for her catering business—and Nick owns that property. Nick may be at the top of his game, but all he wants is a second chance with Willow. When he offers to sell her his commercial space if she agrees to a series of dates with him, their chemistry is so scintillating that jumping back into bed seems like an inevitability. But Willow’s decided all’s fair in sex and blackmail. Little does she know, Nick’s playing to win…and she’s the prize.

What I Liked:

First, thank you to the lovely Brazen publicist (looking at you, Jessica!) that gifted me a Kindle copy of this novel! That was so sweet, and she did not have to do that. I'm glad she did though! I had the opportunity to read this book, and while I didn't *love* it, I appreciate the thought. Thank you!

This novel features Willow and Nick. Willow is kind of uptight, but she's determined to run her business on her own, without her father's money. Nick happens to be the owner of the building she wants to rent, and she has to make a business deal with him to get what she wants for her business. Nick agrees to her conditions, but she must do something for him: go out with him eight times (or was it nine? Go out with him for a fixed number of dates).

This book follows the dates that Willow and Nick go on. I love the thought and creativity that Nick puts into the dates. Years ago, Willow's father forced Nick to break up with Willow. Years later, Nick is determined to have her back. He's a good man - he thinks about what Willow wants, and not just what he wants.

The romance and chemistry in this book is pretty steamy, but it's not one of the steamier Brazen novels I've read. I liked it, for the most part, but I expected more. I had problems with Willow, which contributed to my problems with the chemistry and romance.

But, the novel was a pretty okay novel. The ending was happy! Happy endings are great.

What I Did Not Like:

I had huge problems with Willow, which is why this book gets the low rating that it does. I pretty much flat-out hated Willow. She is insane, she leads Nick on a merry chase, a stupid dance, and she is ungrateful. She blames Nick for EVERYTHING, even AFTER she finds out that Nick left her only because her father forced him to break up with her. She's so annoying! And selfish! And rude! Horrible human being.

I mean, I totally get that she wants to be Ms. Independent Businesswoman or whatever, but she can't appreciate a good thing if it were staring her in the face. Which it was. In the form of Nick Hamilton.

Poor Nick. He deserved better. He spent all that time wooing a woman who is ungrateful. Blehh.

Would I Recommend It:

Err, not really. Yes and no. It was worth the read, but don't go breaking your neck for this one. For the most part, I love Brazen books, and there are plenty of awesome ones out there. Try a different Brazen book!

Rating:

3 stars. Pretty good, but not mind-blowing. I enjoyed the book though!

About the Author:

USA Today bestselling author Karen Erickson writes what she loves to read - sexy contemporary romance. Digitally published since 2006, she's a native Californian who lives in the foothills below Yosemite with her husband and three children.

The Excerpt:

“Come in here.” She grabbed hold of his hand and yanked him inside, shutting the door behind her and twisting the lock into place. “Let’s stay in tonight. It’s cold out there.”

“But...wherever you wanna go, darlin’, I’m game. My treat. You could order fifty lobsters for dinner, and I won’t protest.”

She grimaced. “I hate lobster.”

“You do not,” he said, frowning. “You grew up here. You can pluck a lobster straight out of the ocean from your dad’s deck.”

“Just because I grew up here doesn't mean I have to love seafood.” She scrunched her nose. How she hated explaining this. No one ever got it. “I've never been a big fan. Lobster’s sorta freaky. Crab is too much work, not enough reward. I don’t mind shrimp, though. You can just pop them in your mouth and eat them.”

“I’ll take you out for all you can eat shrimp, then. You can stuff your face until you wanna burst,” he suggested eagerly.

Laughing, she shook her head. “I don’t think so. I’d rather stay in tonight with you.” She sobered up quick. The more they stayed in the better. This so- called relationship needed to stay quiet. One mention of it to the media, local or bigger, and all hell was going to break loose. As in, her father would have an epic freak out.

“We always do that, though. Stay in.” He scowled. “Aren't you getting bored?”

Oh, no. “Are you?” God, he was already tired of her. Really, she shouldn't care. She should be glad. The faster she got rid of him, the better.

Right?

“No. Hell, no. Anytime I’m with you is good, Will.”

He reached for her, settling those big hands on her hips. Dipping his head, he bent his knees a little so he could peer directly into her eyes. “Are you getting sick of me yet?”

She pressed her lips together to keep from saying what she really wanted. I could never get sick of you. You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me.

“No. Well. Your constant sweet talk is getting sort of old.” She rolled her eyes, putting on an act. Nothing Nick did when they were together was getting old.

His mouth curved upward. “What are you talking about?”

“All the darlin’s and the sugars and the princess remarks. I think you say that sort of thing so you never have to worry about the name of the girl you’re with,” she teased.

His face turned frightfully solemn. “You really think that?”

Uh oh. She shrugged. “I've wondered.”

“Really.” His fingers bit into her flesh, he held her so tight.

“Maybe?” He had her doubting herself. How did he do that?

Dope. He constantly keeps you on edge.

“Trust me, I always know who I’m with when I’m with you.” He kissed her—the softest, sweetest kiss ever. So soft, so sweet, she immediately wanted to weep when he pulled away to murmur against her lips, “Willow.”

He never called her Willow. Ever.
