Baltimore Book Festival 2014 - Friday Recap (and GIVEAWAY!)

WELL HELLO THERE!! :D

Yesterday, as many of you know, I attended the Baltimore Book Festival. It's an annual festival that occurs during the last weekend of September, and celebrates BOOKS. Tons and tons of books, publishers, libraries, organizations, etc. get to show off their goods at this event.

This year, instead of Mt. Vernon Place, the Festival was held at the Inner Harbor! Which meant that the event would be much larger than it usually is. And it was! Many authors, tents, and books were present, much more than usual.

So! I only attended the Friday - Saturday and Sunday won't really work out well for me, with schoolwork and my first two midterms just days after the Festival. So I most likely won't attend on either of those days. But I had a wonderful time (as always), got to meet amazing people, and I have fabulous pictures to share with you all!

The "Writing Science Fiction" panel - featuring Jennifer L. Armentrout, Cheryl Klam, Em Garner, Diana Peterfreund, and more!

Hannah, Jen, and I - #yadc

Jennifer L. Armentrout signing my arsenal of books!

She's the sweetest - she knew my name and blog name and remembered me from last year!!

Ashley from The Quiet Concert!

Another science fiction panel, featuring Cheryl Klam, Diana Peterfreund, Marissa Meyer, and more!

Diana Peterfreund, lovely and insightful as always :)

Bummer that I didn't bring any of Marissa Meyer's books to sign, but it was really great to meet her!

Cheryl Klam a.k.a. the best person EVER!! She brought an ARC of Etherworld, specifically for me! She's so great :)

And here's my loot. The two copies of Opposition, Don't Look Back, and Elusion, I brought with me. Etherworld, well, Cheryl brought that for me :D

This is the copy that will be given away (see the bottom of the page!)

And you as well, JLA!

Isn't she nice?!

#TeamBambi fo sho!

My ARC of Elusion, now signed!

The surprise that Cheryl had waiting for me!

SHE IS AMAZING.

Swag. So much swag.

So basically, this event is my favorite of the year. BEA has nothing on the Baltimore Book Festival, in my opinion. Yes, there are no galley drops or massive giveaways at the Festival. But it feels more like a CELEBRATION of books, as it is!

So! What would all of this be without something to share?! Notice how I bought two copies of Opposition. One was personalized, one wasn't! So here is your chance to win the signed (but not personalized copy)!

The Giveaway:

Win a prize pack of Baltimore Book Festival goodies, including a signed paperback copy of Opposition by Jennifer L. Armentrout, and tons of swag! ! PLEASE SEE THE GIVEAWAYS PAGE AND/OR THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS LISTED IN THE RAFFLECOPTER BEFORE ENTERING!

Open INTERNATIONALLY! Good luck!

Stacking the Shelves (#92)

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly meme hosted by Tynga's Reviews, in which bloggers share the books and swag they've received in the past week!

So, what did I get in the week of Sunday, September 21st to Saturday, September 27th?

(all links to Goodreads are provided!)

In the mail:

Both from Little, Brown UK! Interesting how a UK pub is now sending me books. I won't complain! I love Hoyt's books - I love historical romance novels in general!

Zodiac postcards

I literally JUST traded a book for an ARC of Zodiac... and then Penguin decides to surprise me with this package. I'm so not complaining though! That just means GIVEAWAY!

From NetGalley:

Funny how I always say that I'm not a fan of samplers, but now I have three samplers of various novels... haha.

From the Baltimore Book Festival:

See my recap HERE! But I went to the Baltimore Book Festival on Friday, and had a blast! I met Jennifer L. Armentrout (again), Marissa Meyer, Cheryl Klam, Diana Peterfreund (again), and many bloggers! I have a giveaway! But here are the books I came back with:

An ARC of Etherworld by Claudia Gabel and Cheryl Klam (OMG CHERYL BROUGHT THIS WITH HER SPECIFICALLY FOR ME OMG!!!)

Etherworld was the only book that I really "brought back", since it was the only one I didn't have going into the festival. Cheryl is such a sweetie, and brought the book with her, specifically for me! Thank you so much, Cheryl!!

See the full recap HERE! The Festival was sooo much fun. I won't be attending Saturday (the blogger panel and blogger dinner) or Sunday, unfortunately. But Friday was AMAZING, as it is every year!

Review: Ascend by Amanda Hocking

Ascend by Amanda Hocking
Book Three of the Trylle series
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
Publication Date: April 24, 2012
Rating: 4 stars
Source: Review copy sent by the publisher

Summary (from Goodreads):

Wendy Everly is facing an impossible choice. The only way to save the Trylle from their deadliest enemy is by sacrificing herself.  If she doesn’t surrender to the Vittra, her people will be thrust into a brutal war against an unbeatable foe.  But how can Wendy leave all her friends behind…even if it’s the only way to save them?

The stakes have never been higher, because her kingdom isn’t the only thing she stands to lose. After falling for both Finn and Loki, she’s about to make the ultimate choice…who to love forever. One guy has finally proven to be the love of her life—and now all their lives might be coming to an end.

Everything has been leading to this moment.  The future of her entire world rests in her hands—if she’s ready to fight for it.

What I Liked:

Wowie, what an ending! What a conclusion novel! I have to admit, I'm really pleased with this series. Maybe because I binge-read the series and didn't have time to agonize over cliffhangers or the romance, maybe because I liked this series on the surface and didn't get heavily invested... but I really enjoyed this series!

In this final novel of the Trylle trilogy, Wendy gets married. And eventually, has a coronation. Wendy has a lot of growing up to do, because a wedding, and a coronation, are no joke. She must find a way to stop her cruel father from harming her Trylle power, but she also figure out how to reconcile her feelings for Loki, when she is married to Tove. As the summary states, everything has been leading to this moment.

I feel like this book was short. I think it was about the same length as the previous books, but it went by very quickly. Not very much happened in terms of large events, except for the few big ones (the wedding, the coronation, the attack on the Vittra. The plot isn't super intricate or twisty - it's very straightforward and predictable, but that didn't stop me from enjoying the book.

We don't really figure out how everything is going to work out with Wendy's father until the very end. It seems like Wendy searches for a way to defeat him for the entire book, but doesn't have an aha moment until the climax of the novel. Which is fine, because readers are left wondering what will happen.

The romance. Oh, my heart. The romance is perfect, in my opinion. Lots of things happen, like a stolen kiss, a marriage, an tryst, in that other. But OMG, you really have to read this book to understand. I love that one scene in the book, that one night. It is so spontaneous and Wendy doesn't think at all (or maybe she really does, maybe she had it all figured out) but it is perfect. I had a good feeling about the romance from the beginning.

I found the vacillating romance kind of nice, actually. It wasn't vacillating, really, because from the beginning to the end, it's obvious which guy has held Wendy's attention, from fleeting friendship to love. It's obvious which relationship was an obsession (shiny new guy syndrome), which one was a safe relationship, and which one was a true, deep, meaningful relationship. In my opinion.

Wendy is an interesting character. She acts like a child sometimes, she acts very grown and mature at other times, but honestly, I feel like she's a person that every girl can relate to, on some level? I think I really understood her, when it came to the sense of duty. For sure.

The ending is a bit cookie-cutter perfect, and everything works out so nicely. Honestly, that's fine with me, since I wasn't out to love this series or make it my next favorite thing. I would have liked to see more depth in the series plot, this book's plot, and the ending of this book in general, but that's okay. It's really fun to read these books.

What I Did Not Like:

Something that bothered me was how quickly Wendy let go of her human life? Like, she barely ever thought about the life she spent seventeen years living... that struck me as odd. There are many materialistic things that I know teenagers of today's world would not want to give up, no matter how badly they fit in (or did NOT fit in).

And I already mentioned this above, but I would have liked to see more depth in this book, and series in general. It felt very formulaic, in terms of the series plot. Become a princess, save your kingdom, kill the tyrant. Nothing more was at stake, nothing more to be done. A little cliche, I'm afraid!

Would I Recommend It:

Well, in general, I like this series, so I'd say that if you have this series, or any of the three books in this series, definitely give the series a shot! The series could use some depth, but it's a nice series to binge-read. And of course, if you've read books one and two, definitely read this book! Don't be left hanging!

Rating:

4 stars. An excellent ending to an interesting series! I think I'm ready to read Frostfire now!

Blog Tour Review: Stay With Me by J. Lynn

Welcome to the Stay With Me review tour! I'm honored to be a part of the team that gets to share this book with you. I got off to a rocky start with Wait For You, sort of liked Trust In Me, but really enjoyed Be With Me. And of course, I have yet to dislike a "Jennifer L. Armentrout" book :D Read on, lovelies!

Stay With Me by J. Lynn
Book Three of the Wait For You series
Publisher: William Morrow
Publication Date: September 23, 2014
Rating: 4 stars
Source: eARC from Edelweiss

***Warning: this book contains mature subject matter, and is for the eyes of mature readers***

Official Summary:

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Wait for You and Be with Me comes a daring tale that pushes boundaries . . .

At 21, Calla hasn't done a lot of things. She’s never been kissed, never seen the ocean, never gone to an amusement park. But growing up, she witnessed some things no child ever should.   She still carries the physical and emotional scars of living with a strung-out mother, Mona—secrets she keeps from everyone, including her close circle of college friends.

But the safe cocoon Calla has carefully built is shattered when she discovers her mom has stolen her college money and run up a huge credit card debt in her name. Now, Calla has to go back to the small town she thought she’d left behind and clean up her mom’s mess again. Of course, when she arrives at her mother’s bar, Mona is nowhere to be found. Instead, six feet of hotness named Jackson James is pouring drinks and keeping the place humming.

Sexy and intense, Jax is in Calla’s business from the moment they meet, giving her a job and helping her search for Mona. And the way he looks at her makes it clear he wants to get horizontal . . . and maybe something more. Before Calla can let him get close, though, she’s got to deal with the pain of the past—and some very bad guys out to mess her up if she doesn't give them her mom.

What I Liked:

Okay by now, you all have to know how much I have struggled with New Adult contemporary romance. Ever since the dawn of New Adult, I have basically disliked the vast majority of the NA contemporary romance novels out there, because they are all extremely formulaic, generic, carbon copies of each others... yawn. I definitely thought that was the case with JLA's Wait For You, and Trust In Me, but Be With Me was different, which I liked. I had a good feeling about this book, to be honest.

Calla is a friend of Teresa's, and she has a completely different life compared to Teresa and Avery's lives. Calla's mother drained Calla's bank account of all the money Calla had (which she needed to ay tuition) to buy drugs and whatnot. Calla goes home for the summer to clear things up, but only to find her bank account empty, her mother gone, the house (which Calla has not been to in years) a sanctuary for holding drugs... nothing in Calla's life is safe, or good. Jax, the guy who works at her mother's bar with Calla's uncle Clyde, looks out for Calla in so many ways. But drug kingpins are no joke, and Calla's mother is in deep, which is pretty problematic for Calla.

I love that this book isn't focused solely on the romance, or the heroine's tragic past, or whatever. It bothers me a little, how each of JLA's heroines of this series (so far) are all *severely* damaged in some way (rape, domestic abuse, first-degree burns and scar down the face), because it makes it seem like the majority of the population of college girls go through something as SERIOUSLY damaging as these three girls did... which isn't necessarily the case. Don't trivialize horrific life events. Not that I think JLA is doing that. Anyway.

Calla has a unique and tragic past, just like Avery and Teresa. Calla's house wasn't perfectly stable in its electric cables or something, so it basically blew up in Calla's face (literally), killing her two brothers and mangling her skin. Her father left her mother about a year later, and her mother turned to drugs. Years later, Calla's mother drained her bank account, and owes millions of dollars to the drug lord Isaiah.

This is the central issue of the book. Calla needs to figure out how to pay for her tuition, and how to not get caught in Mona's crazy crap... although, she is already involved, just by coming home. Calla wouldn't have survived coming back if not for Uncle Clyde, Jax, Roxy, and Katie (all new characters). Uncle Clyde is the rock in Calla's life. Roxy and Katie are amazing friends, and support Calla always.

Jax... Jax might be my favorite hero of this NA series. Jax doesn't necessarily have a troubled past himself, but he lives in this town - he knows too much about drugs and interactions and getting violent and getting information and all of that. He was never involved with drug dealers or drugs in general, but it's tough growing up in that atmosphere. He's a Marine (sexy man in a uniform), and he is quite the guy. I really like him. He's super honest, super blunt, super nice, gentle, affectionate... not entirely the macho alpha type, though he is. In a quieter sense.

While I mentioned that the romance isn't the only thing going on, it's totally there, and it's important. Jax and Calla fall in love, but it's not easy for Calla. Being scarred... she doesn't see herself as "pretty", but Jax doesn't care about her scars. He appreciates them, and sees the beauty in them (honestly, that makes sense, especially for someone who was involved in the Marines Corp). I really like the romance, because it isn't about two people who are lost and find each other and themselves. Calla might seem a little lost, but the romance is more about two people that find each other and go from there. Instant connection, but slow growth of relationship.

This book is seriously long, but the story is really great. JLA is a really good storyteller, I have to give her that. She's written so many books and even though a lot of her characters start to sound the same, the stories always vary. Which is fantastic! I'll definitely be reading the next book in the series, when it comes time.

What I Did Not Like:

I mentioned a few things above - I almost wish the heroines that JLA creates in this particular NA series weren't so far on the extremes of having tragic pasts or being damaged or whatever. Not every college girl has life-threatening or body-endangering experiences like Avery, Teresa, and Calla all have. Seriously, I promise.

Also - JLA's heroines totally all sound the same, after a while. Katy = Avery = Teresa = Calla = Maddie = Sydney = Layla = Samantha = Serena. Not going to lie, it gets old really fast.

Would I Recommend It:

Sure, sure, if you like New Adult contemporary romance, if you like JLA, sure! If you're not a fan of NA contemporary romance, then ehhh, your life won't change if you read this one, your life won't change if you don't read it. If that makes sense!

Rating:

4 stars. This is definitely the best book of this series yet. There is so much more depth to the story, and the romance really isn't central (in my opinion). Love that direction that JLA is taking her New Adult contemporary romance novels!

He kissed me again, and it was just as great as the one before, but this... this kiss turned into something more. The hand that had almost been cupping my breast was now seriously cupping my breast, and my body moved on its own. My back arched, and I made that sound again, and he seemed to really like it again, because there was a rich, decadent growl that rumbled through him.

Blog Tour Review and Giveaway: Silvern by Christina Farley

Welcome to the blog tour for Silvern by Christina Farley! I'm super excited to be on the tour for this beautiful book! I participated in the tour for Gilded, and I'm honored to have the chance to do the same for Silvern. Read on, gentle readers!

Also, fun fact: this post is my 1000th published post! COOL! Carry on...

Silvern by Christina Farley
Book Two of the Gilded series
Publisher: Skyscape
Publication Date: September 23, 2014
Rating: 4 stars
Source: eARC sent for the blog tour

Official Summary:

Jae Hwa Lee has destroyed Haemosu, the dangerous demi-god that held her ancestors captive, and now she’s ready to forget about immortals and move on with her life. Then the god of darkness, Kud, sends an assassin to kill her. Jae escapes with the knowledge that Kud is seeking the lost White Tiger Orb, and joins the Guardians of Shinshi to seek out the orb before Kud can find it.

But Kud is stronger and more devious than Haemosu ever was. Jae is soon painfully reminded that by making an enemy of Kud, she has placed her closest friends in danger, and must decide how much she can bear to sacrifice to defeat one of the most powerful immortals in all of Korea.

What I Liked:

Cruel author and her awesome books! Ahh! Christina Farley has really outdone herself with this sequel novel. I really enjoyed Gilded, but somehow, I think Silvern was even better. So much more seems to be at stake in this novel, even though everyone thinks that the darkness is behind them.

Jae Hwa thought that her interactions with the Spirit World were over. She defeated Haemosu, isn't that good enough? But the god Kud has noticed, and he wants her to find one of the six orbs of Korea, the orb of the White Tiger, to increase his powers. Jae and the Guardians must find the orb before Kud can find it in the human world. But Kud is a tricksy god. It appears that no one can be trusted, and Jae must trust herself to find the orb and keep it away from Kud.

So much deception and betrayal and love and hatred and crazy awesomeness! I'm impressed with how Farley upped the ante - everything, all of the passion and intensity from book one seemed to be magnified in this book.

Jae proves to readers over and over that she is strong and capable and intelligent and good. I really like Jae - she's kickbutt in the literal and figurative sense. Many of the secondary characters play a huge role in this book, such as Marc (Jae's boyfriend), Kang-dae (a Guardian), Michelle (Jae's friend from school).

I really like the addition of Michelle to the story. She doesn't know what's going on, in terms of the Spirit World, but one small mishap happens, and then she finds out bits and pieces. I don't think she ever fully knows EVERYTHING, but I'm so glad that she is included in the action and craziness. Michelle is very stubborn and very persistent, and sometimes these traits annoyed me (like how she basically pushed herself into knowing about the Spirit World and all of Jae's secrets). But in general, I think Michelle really added to the story.

Much of the story is about finding the orb and keeping it from Kud. The White Tiger orb is believed to be in North Korea - where no civilians are allowed in or out. It was interesting to see how Farley constructed the story around this fact, and how Jae, Marc, and Michelle worked diligently to figure out how to get the orb.

There is so much cause and effect in this book, and so many consequences. Jae's relationship with her father is tenuous and strained, because her father wants to get her on medications for her "hallucinations". Jae and Marc are strong yet brittle, especially with Kang-dae acting so interested in Jae (but not the other way around). Actions, consequences, repercussions. I can't be more specific than that!

The romance is still just Jae and Marc, no matter what you think or have heard. Kang-dae was never interested seriously in Jae - in fact, he and Michelle had a thing going on, but that was never going to last. Jae and Marc love each other, but their relationship is truly tested in this novel. They definitely have their ups and downs. But I really like the romance in this book - there are some beautiful scenes that are romance-related!

The ending is cruuuueeeelllll!! I spoke with the author and she says that a third book has been written... I'm not entirely sure but I don't think a third book was part of the original contract though. CROSS YOUR FINGERS AND BUY GILDED AND SILVERN BECAUSE I NEED CLOSURE. Seriously, this series cannot end the way it did in Silvern. Cruel cruel cruel! Cliffhangers! Ah!

What I Did Not Like:

I think some aspects of this book were a tad predictable. I can't mention anything specific because that would be super spoiler-y, but certain people and certain things were really... obvious? Not necessarily a bad thing, but for more astute readers like myself, there might be a little eye narrowing.

Also I almost kind of wish that the White Tiger played more of a role in things? Like, the Tiger himself. Again, hard to explain, but I feel like things revolve around him and his orb... so why not?

Would I Recommend It:

Yeah! This one and book one! This series is really awesome - set in Korea, with rich Korean mythology and mythological creatures. Farley really did her research when it comes to the setting and the world-building and the mythology. Definitely acquaint yourself with this series if you haven't already! And if none of that has convinced you yet... just stare at the covers ;)

Rating:

4 stars. An excellent sequel! Seriously, this was an awesome sequel and a fabulous book in general. Now, everyone go buy this series and support this author and BRING ME BOOK THREE!!
