Waiting on Wednesday (#211): What To Say Next by Julie Buxbaum

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week, I'm featuring:

What To Say Next by Julie Buxbaum
Publisher: Delacorte Press
Publication Date: July 11, 2017

Summary (from Goodreads):

From the New York Times bestselling author of Tell Me Three Things comes a charming and poignant story about two struggling teenagers who find an unexpected connection just when they need it most. For fans of Sophie Kinsella, Jennifer Niven, and Rainbow Rowell.

Sometimes a new perspective is all that is needed to make sense of the world.

KIT: I don’t know why I decide not to sit with Annie and Violet at lunch. It feels like no one here gets what I’m going through. How could they? I don’t even understand.

DAVID: In the 622 days I’ve attended Mapleview High, Kit Lowell is the first person to sit at my lunch table. I mean, I’ve never once sat with someone until now. “So your dad is dead,” I say to Kit, because this is a fact I’ve recently learned about her.

When an unlikely friendship is sparked between relatively popular Kit Lowell and socially isolated David Drucker, everyone is surprised, most of all Kit and David. Kit appreciates David’s blunt honesty—in fact, she finds it bizarrely refreshing. David welcomes Kit’s attention and her inquisitive nature. When she asks for his help figuring out the how and why of her dad’s tragic car accident, David is all in. But neither of them can predict what they’ll find. Can their friendship survive the truth?

Honestly this sounds wonderful! I'm not a YA contemporary person, but I loved Buxbaum's YA debut Tell Me Three Things, and I am so excited about this new standalone.

    1. I'm extremely picky with the genre! I love adult contemporary (romance) but I tend to stay away from YA contemporary. So the fact that I'm excited to read this book says something!

  12. Not big on this genre either but it does sound like a good read. And the name David Drucker is just awesome for some reason. If it's being compared to Rainbow Rowell (and aren't we due a new book from her) it should definitely be good.

  17. I never read YA contemporary novels a couple of years ago, but lately I've been getting interested in them. And I do like YA novels that deal with psychological elements, as this one does. I had not heard of it before, either. So I'm DEFINITELY adding it to my Goodreads shelves! Thanks for the heads up!!

Also, thanks for dropping by and commenting on my own WOW post!! <3 :)

    1. I think she has published adult novels, but Tell Me Three Things was her first YA one. It was very successful, and rightfully so! I highly recommend that one (or this one!), even if you're like me in terms of YA contemporary preferences/non-preferences!

  31. Funny, I AM a contemporary YA person (or at least I was...or am...I still love older YA contemporary) and I was underwhelmed by her book last year. This does sound good though so I'll be keeping an aye on what you and/or Nick think of it :)
