Review: Sparking the Fire by Kate Meader

Sparking the Fire by Kate Meader
Book  Three of the Hot in Chicago series
Publisher: Pocket Books
Publication Date: September 27, 2016
Rating: 2 stars

***Warning: this is an adult book, and for the eyes of mature readers***

Summary (from Goodreads):

Kate Meader’s blazing Hot in Chicago firefighter series has “everything you want in a romance” (RT Book Reviews, Top Pick)! The flames of desire burn out of control in this sexy third novel when ex-lovers unexpectedly reunite for a sizzling affair that will have the director yelling, “Quiet on the set!”

Actor Molly Cade, America’s fallen sweetheart, finally has her shot at a Hollywood comeback with a dramatic new role as a tough-as-nails firefighter that promises to propel her back to the big time and restore her self-respect.

Wyatt Fox, resident daredevil at Engine Co. 6, needs a low-key job to keep him busy while he recovers from his latest rescue stunt. Consulting on a local movie shoot should add just enough spark to his day. Especially when in struts Molly Cade: the woman who worked his heart over good, and then left him in the Windy City dust.

Their story is straight out of a script: irrepressible, spunky heroine meets taciturn, smoldering hero. But these two refuse to be typecast, and when the embers of an old love are stoked, someone is bound to get burned…

What I Liked:

I'm disappointed. I liked Meader's adult romance series with Entangled Brazen, and I had high hopes for this new book. I've not read the previous two books in this series, but Meader's books in general have worked for me. This book disappointed.

Something I want to point out - I think many readers will really enjoy this book. I have a feeling that my issues with this book are very specific to me. So, don't be thrown by the rating (unless what I say in the "What I Did Not Like:" section resonates with you).

Wyatt Fox and Molly Cade met five years ago, and shared a week of nameless sex. Then Molly walked away, and five years later, they are thrown together. Wyatt has been following Molly's acting career in those five years, watching all of her movies. But Molly didn't know who Wyatt was. Lo and behold, Wyatt is one of the Dempsey siblings working for the Chicago Fire Department, and just who Molly needs to persuade to help her with her latest movie. Sparks fly between these two as their physical flame is rekindled instantly. But can they have a relationship beyond physical attraction?

I liked Wyatt a lot. He's a former Marine, now a really good firefighter. He was a sniper when he was in the Marines, and now he saves lives. Wyatt has the brooding, tall, dark, and handsome thing going on, but somehow he's not a walking cliche. Like, he doesn't seem like the typical brooding hero. He's not arrogant and cocky, though he is loyal and alpha and protective and a little possessive. Wyatt has a lot of hurt and misery stored up, and he wants to do right by his (large) family. When it comes to Wyatt, everyone comes first, and then everyone else, and then Wyatt.

Usually I'm kind of anti-large-family in books, but I liked this large adoptive family of brothers and sisters (and now, in-laws). The family dynamic is so great, very tight-nit and protective. There is someone new to the family in this book, and I will say that Wyatt does NOT have any secret children.

I suppose the story was interesting enough to keep me reading, and I wasn't bored. But I had one large issue with this book, and it pretty much drained all of my enthusiasm for this book. More about that below!

What I Did Not Like:

Here it is -- I hated Molly. I could not stand that woman. And let me just get this out of the way - I think many readers will have no problems with Molly, and will really like her and see her as bold and feisty and feminist and blah blah blah. Me? I thought she was annoying and waaay into people's business and rude and pampered and definitely a diva.

Reason #1 why I don't read books with actors/actresses -- they are divas. It doesn't matter to me how "down-to-earth" the author tries to make them. They always come across as divas, and pampered. Molly is no different. She is so used to getting what she wants (at least, to the paparazzi), and she's good at throwing tantrums left and right.

She's also good at being incredibly bossy and nosy and all up in everyone's business like she's everyone's mother or something. She's so out of line! She acts like she's a part of Wyatt's family, and can make him do things that involve his family. Um, no. Honey, you're not part of the family, you've known them for a few DAYS, maximum. You don't get a say in how Wyatt does things in the family. You don't get to yell at him for doing whatever he needs to do with his family that you don't approve of. Nope.

Molly is just way too used to getting what she likes. What's more, she is horrible to Wyatt. She is constantly fighting with him and pushing him away, and yet, she wants him to have sex with her. Mixed signals much? Rude much? She hates that he feels so protective of her (because God forbid a man feel protective of the woman he loves).

Let me rant for a second - this is a good example of "feminism" that I can't stand, and it's clear that the author is trying way too hard with the feminism aspect in this book. I am 100% for women standing up for ourselves and not letting men (or anyone dictate) our lives. I am NOT okay with a woman feeling like she is invincible and needs no man and must set him straight at every turn.

Because that's a little sexist too. I found no issue with Wyatt's behavior and displays of protectiveness. But Molly just couldn't let him be loyal to her. And in the end, she pushes and pushes and make him think that she thinks he's not good enough. Ugh! Rude!

The icing on the cake is one of my pet peeves - when the woman f**ks up, but she doesn't beg and grovel and fight for her man, and instead, the man is the one that makes the grand gesture. Yup, that scenario is ALL OVER this book's ending. There seriously needs to be a warning label for these types of books/endings, because I seriously can't stand them. YOU f**ked up - own it! Apologize! Go to him! Talk! Communicate! Molly's half-a**ed "gesture" is more for herself than for Wyatt, and it's incredibly selfish in regard to her relationship with him.

Did I mention that she's an actress? She's a drama queen one too. You can see the author trying to get reader sympathy for her, by hiding her behind the tragedy of her ex-husband leaking her nude photos on the internet (which, in her defense, is very sad and I feel for her). But that doesn't excuse the fact that Molly is a shallow drama queen and I didn't like her.

And on a shallow note - this whole book is centered around firefighters. Why the heck were there no fires to be fought? OR firehouse sex? OR Wyatt in a sexy firefighter uniform? I feel so cheated. The firefighter aspect is not used at all, it's like the protagonist could be any profession. *sigh*

Plus, the steamy scenes were so lackluster... basically everything except the male protagonist was so wrong in this book.

Would I Recommend It:

Nope, I do not recommend this book. Meader can do better. Or maybe this is her "better" and I just can't stand it. Guys, I'm all for feminism, but not the feminism in which a woman pushes away a man (especially the man she supposedly loves) because she feels like she has to prove something. That's just... dumb. So dumb. This book was one of the worst romance novels I've read in a while, that I had been looking forward to reading.

Rating:

2 stars. I feel bad for rating this book so low because I had been looking forward to reading it, but it is what it is. Like I said before, I foresee most readers loving this book. But, because of the female protagonist, I could not get into the story like I'd hoped.

About the Author:

Originally from Ireland, Kate cut her romance reader teeth on Maeve Binchy and Jilly Cooper novels, with some Mills & Boon thrown in for variety. Give her tales about brooding mill owners, oversexed equestrians, and men who can rock an apron or a fire hose, and she is so there. Now based in Chicago, she writes sexy contemporary romance with alpha heroes and strong heroines who can match their men quip for quip.

The Excerpt:

When he didn’t hand over the towel as requested, just stood there gamely holding Liv’s gaze instead of dipping it over her nakedness like any other man with a pulse, she growled her frustration. Goddamn him, she was just a jumble of body parts in this man’s glittering blue eyes. It was all a game to Flynn—well, she was tired of playing every man’s fool.

“Just forget it.” She moved forward, ready to grasp the towel from his hands when he unfolded it and wrapped it around her shoulders. Still, he held her gaze. Not even a peek below her neck.

“What now, Livvie?” The teasing had gone from his voice, replaced by an unexpected huskiness. Mere inches of warm Mexican air separated their chests—his unfortunately covered, hers indisputably naked. Yet again, he had her on the back foot.

“I’ll call the airline. Reschedule my flight back to Houston.”

There was nothing for her here.

Flynn still held onto the edges of the towel and, instinctively, she inclined toward all that masculine heat. This involuntary action was soon followed by other wonders of the human body—her mouth went desert-dry, then watered, then dried up again.

Make up your minds, saliva glands!

He jerked the towel until they were chest to chest, hip to hip, core to…oh, Flynn. And then he bent his head and took control of lips that did not belong to him.

You’re a jerk, her brain was screaming. An unscrupulous, goat-fucking asswipe. But then something happened. Something incredible.

Her body surrendered. It knew what she needed, and she let herself off the hook because she’d had a rotten couple of days and deserved a moment’s bliss.

The kiss deepened, its velvet invasion obliterating her last shred of, albeit token, resistance. He swept his tongue inside, not sloppily, not stabbing, but with the perfect amount of heated pressure. Drowning in the feel and taste of him, she clutched at his broad shoulders, anxious for an anchor through this typhoon of sensation engulfing her.

He stopped, his breath fanning her lips with hot pants, and he licked his own lips, savoring her. There was something menacing in the action.

“Am I still the last guy on earth you’d open those pretty little thighs for, Liv?”

And we’re back. “You’re going to need more than an average kissing game to get with me, Cross.”

“Nothin’ average about that kiss.”

She sighed. “Don’t beg. It’s so unTexan.”

“Before the night’s through, sweets, I’ll be hearing your fuck-me-Flynn moans.”

“In your Liv-filled dreams.”

Still holding the towel, he finally let his gaze rove over her naked breasts. They perked up under his thorough examination.

“Not so far from the truth, that. But then you’ve never been out of my dreams for long.”

What I Liked:

Even the Score was the first book I'd read by Kate Meader, and it was one of my favorite romance novels of 2015. Hunter and Tess's story was wonderful, romantic, and very steamy. I read Taking the Score and also liked it, though not as much as its predecessor. One Week to Score falls somewhere in-between those two novels! It was a fantastic conclusion to the series.

Twenty minutes before reaching the altar, Liv discovers her groom and her maid of honor getting it on. What was supposed to be the happiest day of her life turns into the worst day of her life. She's not heartbroken (her relationship with Peter was somewhat politically arranged), but she's angry. She decides to go on the honeymoon trip to Mexico anyway... and Flynn Cross decides to invite himself along. Best friend of her brother Brody, Flynn used to be one of Liv's favorite people, when they were younger. But now all they do is bicker and fight. But Flynn is determined to be there for Liv, and he doesn't want to see her do anything she'd regret later. He offers to be her sex buddy for the trip, since she's pretty desperate to get laid and forget all about the almost-wedding. But what is between Liv and Flynn goes so much deeper than the surface, and they'll have to face their past and realize that they've been in love with each other all along.

This book is somewhat similar, initially, to Down for the Count by Christine Bell, which is one of my favorite Brazen books of all time. Bride finds groom with maid of honor, bride goes on honeymoon, bride's former crush and childhood friend goes with her, things get hot. I loved Down for the Count, so I was sure I'd like this one too. Plus, Kate Meader's books are so great. Full of humor and steamy steam and realness, her books are so enjoyable.

I've wanted to read Flynn's story since reading book one! Flynn came from nothing, and was taken in by the Kane family when he was young. He's always felt welcome in the family, but in the back of his head, he's also always felt like a charity case. So he dropped out of Texas A&M and enlisted in the army. He communicated with Liv a lot, when he was in Iraq, but then an accident happened, and he cut off communication with her. She never knew why. From then on, the two of them could barely be in the same room together. Liv assumed the worst and Flynn never corrected her, and seven years later, they're always fighting.

Flynn is a charming, charismatic, sweet guy, and very obviously a romantic. It's clear that he's always loved Liv, but being in the army and then in a near-fatal accident messed with him. He never told Liv the truth, because he thought it was best for her. Liv is a bold, smart woman who doesn't like the box that her mother and her former fiance put around her. She doesn't want to be the wife of a congressman who doesn't want her. She's passionate and lively and she's always loved Flynn... even years later, after he stopped communicating with her with no reason.

Second-chance romances are always fun and sweet, but I especially love the hate-to-love ones. Liv and Flynn fight all the time, and their banter is so entertaining! I also love how silly the two of them really are, when they're not fighting. Sometimes they settle into old routines and the Liv and Flynn of the past shine through, and it's cute to see. Flynn was always the one to make Liv happy, and Liv always made Flynn feel worth it.

These two have such great chemistry! All the built-tension from over the years leaks over and explodes, and these two don't even get close to how much they want each other in the one week they were in Mexico, on Liv's "honeymoon". Lots of steamy scenes, though most are fairly short.

I like that the climax and ending are somewhat low on drama! Liv finds out some things, and there is a confrontation, and she's shocked at first. Flynn is the one that has to apologize and do the chasing, and it makes sense, in this story. I like how Liv handles everything overall. And I like that the whole thing was resolved intelligently and not too dramatically.

The humor was great! I liked how funny all of the books in this series was, how "real" the writing was, the voice of the book. There was something refreshing and real about the writing style.

Overall, a solid conclusion to this wonderful series! Hunter and Tess are still my favorite of the three couples, but I loved getting into the heads of all three Score men (Hunter, Brody, Flynn). I liked the epilogue of this book, giving us a sneak peek of the lives of Brody/Emma and Flynn/Liv. I just wish we could have seen Hunter/Tess as well.

What I Did Not Like:

This book is sooooo incredibly short. The eARC is only 139 pages. I'm used to stating my disappointment at how short Brazen novels are, but this one definitely felt short. I wish some of the steamy scenes were longer (I think there was only one "long" one - the rest were very short). All were well-written, and the book in general didn't feel rushed at all, but the book could have been longer.

Would I Recommend It:

In general, I like the series and would recommend it. I think I'd recommend book one the most (Even the Score), as it was the steamiest and most enjoyable. Book two was a little weird, but still a great read. This book was fantastic, but a little too short. I like the series and would recommend these to anyone who likes steamy adult romance novels. But book one is the best one!

Rating:

4 stars. Like I said, this was a great conclusion to the series! I liked it, and the trilogy in general. I hope that Meader will write more Brazen books, though I will definitely check out her other published novels. She writes really hot romance novels with well-developed characters and a lovely side of humor!

Blog Tour Review and Giveaway: Taking the Score by Kate Meader

Welcome to the blog tour for Taking the Score by Kate Meader! Book one, Even the Score, is one of my favorite Brazen novels ever. This sequel, featuring Emma and Brody, does not disappoint. Check out my thoughts below, and enter a wonderful giveaway to go with the tour!

Official Summary:

His office temptation is now his full-blown fantasy…

Paying down her sister’s debts has left Emma Strickland with little more than the thrift store suit on her back. And as if the suckfest couldn’t get worse, she’s forced to moonlight as a waitress to support herself and her cat. At a strip club. Her uptight, sexy-as-hell boss Brody Kane can never find out.

Texas property tycoon Brody Kane hired Emma for her spreadsheet skills, but her prim and proper demeanor sealed the deal. There’s no room in his life for a sexy distraction … and yet, he can’t stop lusting after the delicious Ms. Strickland. And then he takes an important client to a Chicago strip club and gets the worst lap dance in adult entertainment history. From Emma.

Now that he knows his office good girl has a naughty streak, Brody makes it his mission to uncover her secrets, one steamy, illicit, over-the-desk encounter at a time. But Emma is hiding more than her side job, and her final secret could end up destroying them both.

What I Liked:

I didn't love this one as much as I loved Even the Score - that is pretty difficult - but I enjoyed this addition to the series. I don't think I've read a single book with a stripper as a protagonist, so this was a bit different. And yet, the book had the same magnetic quality that Meader's books have. It was fiery hot and well-developed and hilarious. Brody and Emma are such a great pair!

Brody Kane is a rich and very successful property tycoon, working with two close friends and fellow Texans. Part of his success is due to his excessively organized secretary/assistance, Emma. Emma dresses like an old lady and doesn't ooze sex appeal, which is why Brody hired her. But some part of him has been attracted to her, and he wants to know why. Emma has good reason for dressing the way she does - she works at a strip club, as a waitress, to help pay for her younger sister's debt with the strip club's owner. But the owner thinks she isn't making enough as a waitress, and so one night, she decides that she'll have to swallow the revulsion and try something new. The night just happened to be the night that Brody takes a sleazy client to the strip; circumstances have Emma giving Brody her first - and worst - lap dance. Brody knows Emma's secret now, and there is one thing he's certain of - she is never working at the strip club again. Brody takes her in (she's a bit homeless), despite knowing that she has more secrets besides working at a strip club. But will those secrets destroy their budding relationship?

So I guess you could say this book isn't quite about a stripper - Emma works as a waitress in the strip club, but she isn't really a stripper. She's never worked a pole or given a lap dance for anyone. Her first (and only) lap dance was for Brody. And after that disaster, she never does anything in the strip club - she never goes back. Brody is furious that she works there, so he "buys" her - offers the owner several grand for Emma to do private things with him, outside of the strip club. And when Brody finds out that she's homeless, he takes her in (his penthouse is enormous and has at least five guestrooms).

I love how dominant and alpha Brody is. He's an alpha male in every way, but he's also very professional and sweet too. He's commanding and muscled and HOT, but kind and thoughtful and always trying to help. What really got me going? He's a huge science fiction nerd. He loves comics and Star Wars and it's adorable! An alpha male who is really into basketball and Star Wars - winning combination!

Emma is working at the strip club as part of an agreement she made with the strip club's owner. Her younger sister owns the owner thousands of dollars, so Emma is working at the strip club while Daisy is in rehab. Emma hates that Brody throws a bunch of money at the owner and "buys" her, but he doesn't do it to be sleazy, and he doesn't even fire her (remember, she's his PA by day). And letting her stay with him while she finds a place to live? Emma has a lot of pride, but even she knows a kind man and sweet offer when she sees one.

Still, her pride and stubbornness makes nothing easy for the two of them. They are like fire and ice (although I'm not sure who the ice would be, in this example). They clash over many things (her night job, her living with him, him paying the owner), but one thing they both agree on - their fiery chemistry.

I love hot these two are together! Maybe not as hot as Tess and Hunter in Even the Score, but there were a lot of steamy scenes in this book. I think the book could have benefited from one or two more, but then, I pretty much always say that, with most Brazen novels. They're so short!

The conflict revolves around Emma's sister's debt, as well as Brody and Emma's relationship. I like how they work things out! It takes a lot for Emma to truly accept Brody's help, and the insight of a very wise friend helps Emma see that Brody does what he does not to try and own her, but because he cares about her and wants to help her. Nevertheless, I really liked watching the pair bump heads and slowly trust each other (on both sides).

Overall, a good companion sequel to the series. I am very excited to read Flynn's book (and I so hope his lady is going to be who I think it is)!

What I Did Not Like:

The premise of the book really threw me, in terms of Emma and her sister's debt. I was pretty infuriated that Emma would start working a second job in a STRIP CLUB to pay for her sister's debt (which Daisy accrued because of her drug addiction). And then the owner tells Emma she needs to bring in more money, which is how Emma ended up giving Brody a (terrible) lap dance - that is awful. I love my own sister, but I don't stripping is what I do to pay her debt. Especially since Emma is swallowing bile as she considers stripping and giving lap dances. Not. Okay.

Not to mention the sister is doing NOTHING to help pay her own debt. Sure, she's in rehab, but this is her 3584395843095th time in rehab. Selfish. So selfish. Meanwhile, Emma is working two jobs, she's hopeless, and she hasn't slept more than two hours per night over the last three months.

If you can get past this, the book is great (which was the case for me). But it's hard not to want to launch the book far away and through a window when you read about Emma's sister and this whole debt thing to start with. Stripping? Seriously? By any means necessarily is too demeaning for Emma - she doesn't want to do it. It's not empowering to her.

Sigh. The book was lovely, except it's backstory with Emma's sister, which is basically the premise for the book.

Would I Recommend It:

I love Kate Meader's books, and I do really like this one! I much more recommend Even the Score, but this one is good, a quick and steamy read. I like this series, and this book doesn't disappoint. I wasn't sure I'd like it (like I said, I don't really read books involving a stripper as a protagonist), but Meader is pretty much an auto-read author for me!

Rating:

3.5 stars -> rounded up to 4 stars. This one was good, maybe not a favorite Brazen, but part of a series that I recommend. I can't wait to read Flynn's book. Hot Texan businessmen for the win!

A growl erupted from his throat, an unabashed display of possessiveness that even he found to be clichéd. But it drew the perfect reaction. Her teeth snagged on the pillow of her lower lip and emerged moist. Her nipples budded against the thin fabric of his tee.

Ms. Strickland likes it when you growl.

He closed the gap between them, gratified when she stepped back against the counter.

“Admit you’re jealous, Emma.”

“Never,” she said defiantly.

“Just your nipples then. They’re pouting.” He inclined his head. “And these earlobes have a greenish tinge to them.” He brushed his lips across the delicate shell of her ear. “And this spot where your neck meets your shoulder”—he inhaled her scent and placed the lightest kiss at that sensitive patch of skin—“the most jealous of all. And you in that tee is not helpin’ anyone, baby.”

“Are you telling me your engine gets all revved up when you see an old tee?” Fake bravado trilled through her voice. She pulled at the hem of the shirt. It fell to midthigh, but her drawing attention to it stirred his blood into a cauldron of need.

“When I see you in it. Because now it’s going to smell of you.” Reaching behind her, he bunched the material so it shaped to her perky breasts. “I know it brushed your skin, rubbed your nipples, that you were wearing it when I fucked you to paradise on my bedroom floor. Maybe you hitched it up to your hips while you thought about me and stroked yourself last night.”

He gave her a moment to pull out of his grasp, and when she didn’t, he hiked the tee higher, up past her ass. A wisp of lace crashed into his vision field as she parted her legs on a moan.

“You have other clothes. Ones I bought you. You don’t have to wear this, so why are you tormenting me?”

Her breathing came in short tugs, her breasts straining against the fabric he held taut against her body. Every part of him howled to be completed by her surrender. He could dip his head and suck her stiff nipple, but she had to ask for it. Beg for it. Last time, he took.

“Why are you wearing it?” he repeated.

“Be-because it’s soft.”

“And?”

“Comfortable.”

Not satisfied with that answer, he nudged his knee between her legs. Her lips parted to reveal all that wet, succulent pink, mimicking the pliant heat he longed to plant his cock into over and over. “And?”

“It smells of you.” In a surprise move, she put him on the back foot by leaning in and inhaling from his neck. “But it’s a ghost of your scent and can’t possibly compete with the real thing. God, you smell so good. It was the first thing I noticed about you when I interviewed. You shook my hand and I walked out of there on a contact high. No one should smell that good or look that hot. And in glasses, too, you fucking dick.”

Paying down her sister’s debts has left personal assistant Emma Strickland with little more than the thrift store suit on her back. And as if the suckfest couldn’t get worse, she’s forced to get a second job as a waitress to support herself and her cat. At a strip club. Her uptight, sexy-as-hell boss Brody Kane can never find out.

Texas property tycoon Brody Kane hired Emma for her spreadsheet skills, but her prim and proper demeanor sealed the deal. There’s no room in his life for a sexy distraction…and yet, he can’t stop lusting after the delicious Ms. Strickland.
But then he takes an important client to a Chicago strip club and gets the worst lap dance in adult entertainment history. From Emma.

Now that he knows his office good girl has a naughty streak, Brody makes it his mission to uncover her secrets, one illicit, over-the-desk encounter at a time. But Emma is hiding more than her side job, and her final secret could end up destroying them both.

About Tracy Wolff:

Tracy Wolff collects books, English degrees and lipsticks and has been known to forget where—and sometimes who—she is when immersed in a great novel. At six she wrote her first short story—something with a rainbow and a prince—and at seven she forayed into the wonderful world of girls lit with her first Judy Blume novel. By ten she’d read everything in the young adult and classics sections of her local bookstore, so in desperation her mom started her on romance novels. And from the first page of the first book, Tracy knew she’d found her life-long love. Now an English professor at her local community college, she writes romances that run the gamut from contemporary to paranormal to erotic suspense.

And for all of those who want the unedited version:

Tracy Wolff lives with four men, teaches writing to local college students and spends as much time as she can manage immersed in worlds of her own creation. Married to the alpha hero of her dreams for twelve years, she is the mother of three young sons who spend most of their time trying to make her as crazy as possible.
