Review: Willowgrove by Kathleen Peacock

Willowgrove by Kathleen Peacock
Book Three of the Hemlock series
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books
Publication Date: January 6, 2015
Rating: 4 stars
Source: ARC sent by the publisher

Summary (from Goodreads):

Willowgrove is Kathleen Peacock's riveting conclusion to the Hemlock trilogy, a dark, romantic, paranormal suspense series that pits friendship against survival, and trust against love.

Ever since Mac's best friend, Amy, was murdered, Hemlock has been a dangerous place. But now that Mac, her boyfriend, Kyle, and Amy's ex, Jason, have investigated a mass breakout from Thornhill, a werewolf "rehabilitation" camp, the danger has only grown. Fear of the infection spreading is now at an all-time high, and anyone with a scar is suspected of being a wolf.

What makes Mac even more afraid, though, are the dark experiments that the warden of Thornhill was performing on wolves in a secret asylum called Willowgrove. Uncovering the truth about what happened may be the only way for Mac to save everyone she loves and end her nightmares for good.

What I Liked:

Oh my gosh. OH MY GOSH. Wow. You guys. I don't even know how to express my feels. This book was... amazing. So much heart-pounding awesomeness, so much nail-biting, so much page-flipping. I couldn't finish this book fast enough, and yet, I didn't want it to end.

Mac, Kyle, and Jason are all back in Hemlock - but things are tense in the town. Serena has not recovered from her ordeal in Thornhill, and even though rumors of Sinclair's death are going around, no one can trust anything. Amy might be the key to it all - if only she were still alive...

Again, wow. I don't even know how Peacock could make this book even more epic than the previous books. Hemlock seemed like a murder mystery book, a whodunit. But then Thornhill really amped up the tension and craziness in the series. You'll recall my review of Thornhill, in which I called the book one of the best sequels I've read. It really set up the scene for an epic final showdown - the conclusion novel.

The mood of this book is so, so tense, scary almost. I was terrified for Mac and Kyle and Serena and Jason at almost every page. It felt like at every chance, someone was being separated from someone else, and I was just SO SCARED of no one coming back together. Mac was too, so it wasn't just me. Peacock did a wonderful job of keeping me on the edge of my seat - I just HAD to keep reading.

I really like Mac. From beginning to end - of the book, and the series in general - her character grows and flourishes. She'll do anything for Kyle, but also for Serena, Jason, and her other friends. Mac is so smart, do determined, so pigheaded sometimes. She isn't perfect and everything isn't always black and white with her, and I love this characterization.

I seriously love the romance, in this particular book. I was worried in the first book because it really seemed like Peacock was pushing a love triangle at readers, but book two changed my mind, and this book really sealed the deal. Kyle and Mac are a fabulous couple.

Kyle isn't just a fantastic love interest - he's a powerful and memorable protagonist. He's kind but also intense and protective, and I love those traits, balanced with Mac's selflessness and stubbornness. Heck, both of them are really stubborn, and it really works between the two of them.

I wondered how Peacock would approach the overall issue of the book - werewolf rights, I'm calling it. Nationwide, werewolves are not accepted. In this book, so many secrets are uncovered, about the camps, the lupine disease, the history behind it all. Peacock drops secret after secret, twist after twist. I loved it!

Peacock also dialed up the blood and guts and death and injuries and craziness. Seriously, I was so afraid that everyone would end up dead or something. Bodies. Blood. Everywhere. Which really lent to the authenticity of the situation - it felt like the world was ending, honestly. The riots, the National Guard coming to Hemlock, the looting... it felt like a revolution, but like, one that could very well happen today. So realistic!

In the end, things wrapped up... interestingly. We get a lot of resolution, in terms of Mac and Kyle, Mac and her father, the whole werewolf rights thing, Sinclair, Serena, Jason... Peacock hits just about everything, whether "happy" or "sad". Personally, I'm pleased with the ending - not saying whether or not it was a happy one or not, but that I'm very satisfied with it. Peacock write a very great and realistic ending to things, and not just the ideal, optimal ending.

I want to say more, specifically, but this is a conclusion novel... and I shan't not spoil things! But guys, this book was awesome! Seriously!

What I Did Not Like:

Hmmm, I can't *really* think of anything at the moment. I'm sure there must be something, since I'm a strong believer in the no-book-is-actually-perfect thing, but I can't think of something. So.

Would I Recommend It:

YES! If you've made it this far, then for sure, read this book! If you've read at least book one, KEEP GOING!! It only gets better. This is probably my favorite of the three, then book two, then book one... not that book was bad by any means!! All three are SOOOO good. And this is coming from the girl who was originally hesitant to read book one, because at the time, there were so many "werewolf"-related books publishing, after Twilight. So. You should read this series. Like now.

Rating:

4 stars. I love this series! Potentially one of my favorites. Also, hey, look at me, finishing another series! Woot! And it was a good one!

Review: Thornhill by Kathleen Peacock

Thornhill by Kathleen Peacock
Book Two of the Hemlock series
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books
Publication Date: September 10, 2013
Rating: 4 stars
Source: ARC sent by the author

Summary (from Goodreads):

Mac can’t lose another friend. Even if he doesn't want to be found.

The ripple effect caused by Mac’s best friend Amy’s murder has driven Mac’s new love, Kyle, to leave Hemlock and disappear from her life forever. But Mac knows that Kyle plans to enroll in a rehabilitation camp, where he can live with other werewolves. She refuses to accept his decision, especially since the camps are rumored to be tortuous. So she sets out in search of Kyle with a barely sober Jason—and Amy’s all-seeing ghost—in tow.

Clues lead Mac to find Kyle in a werewolf den in Colorado—but their reunion is cut short by a Tracker raid. Now Mac and Kyle are trapped inside the electric fences of Thornhill, a camp for young werewolves. As she devises an escape plan, Mac uncovers dangerous secrets buried within the walls of Thornhill—and realizes that the risk to the people she loves is greater than ever before.

What I Liked:

Confession time: I've had an ARC of this book since April. And I just decided to crack it open in July. Sequels are weird creations. If it's the second book of a series - particularly a trilogy - then I automatically will be afraid to read the sequel. Because often in YA, with trilogies, authors like to kill someone or take someone way or separate the protagonists, at the end of the sequel. For example: The Crown of Embers by Rae Carson, Fractured by Sarah Fine, Prodigy by Marie Lu (didn't read that one actually, but I've heard some things).

Sequels are scary! In sequels, the protagonist is tested. He/she must suffer for the decisions made in book one. Relationships are tested, and often in trilogy sequels, if a second love interest wasn't already introduced in book one, he/she is introduced in book two. OR, book two is focused more on the secondary love interest.

See why I am scared of sequels? Well, let me put your fears of THIS sequel to rest. This book does not end in one of the primary or secondary characters dying, or the protagonists being separated, or anything of which I was afraid. Huzzah! I can sleep at night!

Seriously though. This book was awesome. Mac leaves her home with Jason and Serena to find Kyle. All she does, all the decisions she makes, is for Kyle. When they finally meet (that's not a spoiler, you knew they would), things happen... and everyone - all the wolves and Mac included - are sent to Thornhill, a camp for werewolves.

The majority of the book is set in Thornhill. Mac and a werewolf Eve try and find a way to get themselves and Kyle and Serena out. Enter Jason, who wasn't captured and sent to Thornhill, because he was human. He comes to Thornhill as a counselor. The whole gang is in Thornhill, with seemingly no way out.

I loved that part of the book - how well Peacock wrote the camp. I was terrified of reading parts of the book that was in the camp, because it was scary! What if they got caught? What if Mac was found to be human, and just pretending to be a werewolf? What if one of them lost control, or got killed, or was taken to Willowgrove?

So many things could go wrong. And in the end, things did go wrong. And right. I can say that the ending is a good ending, a happy ending, despite everything that happened at Thornhill. This sequel did one thing that sequels should do - it took the series plot to a whole new level. Book one was about Amy's death... book two is about werewolf rights (sort of).

The romance is there, but it's not front and center. I love how Peacock makes sure readers remember that Mac and Kyle are our primary couple, and that they love each other. BUT, she also makes this book more about getting out of Thornhill than anything else. Saving each other is important... but so is getting out.

YAY for Thornhill! I really shouldn't have been so afraid of reading this book, because it's an excellent sequel - possibly one of the best sequels I've read.

What I Did Not Like:

The ending is a little... bittersweet. It ends well, but there is something specific about it that is sad. I don't know what Peacock has planned for the rest of the series, but I hope there is a happy ending overall! Like I said before, the ending is good... but it leaves you with a bittersweet taste in your mouth.

Or whatever that phrase is.

Would I Recommend It:

YES! Let's say you didn't like Hemlock: read Thornhill anyway. Liked/loved Hemlock? You're good to go! Didn't read Hemlock? Read it, and this one!

Rating:

4 stars. This book did not fall victim to the sophomore/sequel slump!
