Blog Tour Interview with Ryan Graudin, Author of All That Burns (and GIVEAWAY!)

Meet Ryan Graudin!

Alyssa: Hi, Ryan! Thank you so much for joining me today on my blog! And congratulations on yet another fabulous release! How does it feel to be published three times now? In TWO years?

Ryan: Thank you for having me, Alyssa! It’s been incredibly surreal. Technically the three books were out in a single year, since ALL THAT GLOWS came out on February 11th and ALL THAT BURNS is coming out on February 10th. I have another book coming out next fall as well, so that’s four books in two years. People seem to think I write incredibly fast, but I really don’t. The releases being so close together just kind of happened that way. After 2015 I think it’s safe to expect around a pace of about one book a year. I like seeing sunlight and all.

Alyssa: What was the process of choosing a title for this book? (All That Glows as well)

Ryan: I was in the middle of drafting ALL THAT BURNS when we were deciding titles for the series. HarperTeen wanted a title with a recognizable structure for both books, and it was actually my suggestion of ALL THAT BURNS as a title for the sequel that swayed them to accept both titles. Titles are really difficult to come up with and I’m glad I landed two great ones with this series.

Alyssa: Did you always see this series as a duology?

Ryan: A tricky question! I originally wrote ALL THAT GLOWS as a standalone (I was querying agents at the time, and your chances of getting signed are much higher if you’re shopping a standalone as opposed to a series). When we were getting ready to shop the manuscript to editors, my agent suggested that I come up with a synopsis for books two and three. I planned out an entire trilogy. HarperTeen ended up buying two books, with an option on the third, which left me in an interesting situation writing wise. I wanted to write a second novel that was complete in and of itself, but could also flow into a third book if necessary. Although I do have more plot about Emrys and Richard and Anabelle in my brain, there’s no telling right now if it will get written. I’m busy writing a bunch of other contracted books at the moment.

Alyssa: What’s another YA historical fantasy series that you love? Personally, I love Amy Butler Greenfield’s Chantress trilogy!

Ryan: You know, I can’t think of any YA historical fantasy to rec off the top of my head. Adult-wise, I loved Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Suzanne Clark, which is a historical fantasy set in an alternate timeline. As for YA fantasy, I adore the Daughter of Smoke & Bone series by Laini Taylor.

Alyssa: What’s next on the publishing plate for you? Anything contracted, or projects?

Ryan: My next book comes out in Fall 2015, and I’m not able to divulge much about it at the moment, except to say it’s the first book in a duology and it is very different from anything else I've done before genre-wise.

Alyssa: And that’s it from me! Thank you for letting me pick your brain, Ryan!

Ryan: Thank you so much for having me, Alyssa! It was a pleasure.

  8. Great interview! Funny that you mentioned Johnathon Strange. I was reading Night Shift by Lilith Saintcrow and the main character was wearing a Johnathon Strange tshirt. I have never heard of it and that is twice in one week.. So I think I will just have to look it up.
