In the desert outside Yuan, Gem, a mutant beast, fights to save his people, the Monstrous, from starvation. Neither dreams that together, they could return balance to both their worlds.

Isra wants to help the city’s Banished people, second-class citizens despised for possessing Monstrous traits. But after she enlists the aid of her prisoner, Gem, who has been captured while trying to steal Yuan’s enchanted roses, she begins to care for him, and to question everything she has been brought up to believe.

As secrets are revealed and Isra’s sight, which vanished during her childhood, returned, Isra will have to choose between duty to her people and the beast she has come to love.



I've never read anything by Stacey Jay (I know she has many books out), but I love retellings! I love Beauty and the Beast! And Delacorte Books, as a whole, always has books that impress me. I can't wait to read this one!

    I haven't heard of this title or author, but the story line sounds intriguing and I love fairytale retellings. Good pick!

    You're the second one I see featuring this today, and I love it. I still haven't read Jay's Juliett Immortal which is sitting on my shelf very patiently, but this did go right onto my list anyway. =) My WoW

    I love retellings too and this one looks great! I've never read anything by Stacey Jay either but after reading this post, I will have to check out her books. I like the trend of fairy tale retellings that seems to be happening now (Cinder and Rapunzel Untangled to name a few) and can't wait for more!
