Review: Dark Breaks the Dawn by Sara B. Larson

Dark Breaks the Dawn by Sara B. Larson
Book One of an untitled duology
Publisher: Scholastic Press
Publication Date: May 30, 2017
Rating: 3 stars
Source: ARC sent by a fellow blogger

Summary (from Goodreads):

On her eighteenth birthday, Princess Evelayn of Eadrolan, the Light Kingdom, can finally access the full range of her magical powers. The light looks brighter, the air is sharper, and the energy she can draw when fighting feels almost limitless.

But while her mother, the queen, remains busy at the war front, in the Dark Kingdom of Dorjhalon, the corrupt king is plotting. King Bain wants control of both kingdoms, and his plan will fling Evelayn into the throne much sooner than she expected.

In order to defeat Bain and his sons, Evelayn will quickly have to come into her ability to shapeshift, and rely on the alluring Lord Tanvir. But not everyone is what they seem, and the balance between the Light and Dark comes at a steep price.

In the first book of a remarkable duology, Sara B. Larson sets the stage for her reimagining of Swan Lake -- a lush romance packed with betrayal, intrigue, magic, and adventure.

What I Liked:

I didn't hate this book, but I didn't love it. Words that everyone hates to hear, because they don't really mean a whole lot. Was this book really good until the ending? Was it a mix of positives and negatives? Was there one or two big things that threw everything off? In this case, there were positives and negatives. And I suppose the ending was pretty terrible (cruel), though it's so dramatic and ghastly and it leaves room for so much to happen in book two.

I've read Larson's debut trilogy (Defy, Ignite, and Endure), and I enjoyed the series. I have been pretty excited about this new book of Larson's for quite some time. I don't know much about Swan Lake, but I didn't care about that because the book sounded great, and I'd had good experiences with Larson's books in the past. This book, while fairly intriguing, was not Larson's strongest.

Princess Evelayn has just turned eighteen and gained full access to her power. She is thrust into ascending the Light throne when her mother is killed in battle, fighting King Bain of the Dark Kingdom. Evelayn manages to keep control of the Light, but she must quickly come up with a plan to defeat King Bain and his sons. But Evelayn is under a lot of pressure, especially to hone her abilities and to shapeshift. With the help of her trusted General, her best friend, and Lord Tanvir, Evelayn sets out to defeat her Dark enemy and restore balance with his heir, or die in the process.

It took a little while for the story to grow on me - and Evelayn as well. The story moves at a very slow pace initially, and I can't say I was all that interested. I think things started to pick up for me when Evelayn and Tanvir's relationship started to pick up. I'll get to that. Anyway, the story starts and follows Evelayn's ascent to the throne, and how she handles the pressure. It's so much pressure, to be thrust onto the throne without being able to grieve, to be thrown into the middle of a war, to be expected to be strong and without fear or weakness, to be expected to bind to a male and produce an heir. So, yeah, the story wasn't interesting at first, but then it really began to shape up with all of Evelayn's duties and worries and plans.

Evelayn seemed distant and cold to me at first, and I didn't really like her. But then I started to understand her better. She takes on an enormous amount of pressure, and the author makes perfectly transparent how much Evelayn struggles with it all. But Evelayn becomes a much stronger, commanding leader, as the story goes on.

This book is written in third person, and there are multiple POVs. We read from Evelayn's, Tanvir's, Ceren's, and even Lorcan's (the heir of the Dark Kingdom/son of King Bain). Evelayn's POV dominated, but Tanvir's was sprinkled throughout, and Ceren's (Evelayn's best friend). Lorcan's POV was the most boring. Lorcan has no affection or pity for the Light Kingdom, but he also hates his father. Lorcan is cold and sly, and an interesting but merciless villain of the story.

I adored Tanvir. He's just so good, and kind and noble and sweet. Don't get me wrong, he is also fiercely protective and war-hardened. He's the High Lord of a set of lands, but he is also a soldier and and very good with his power and his skills in fighting and battle. Tanvir almost seemed to be too good to be true, with his kindness and gentleness with Evelayn, but I rolled with it. I like him too much, and it's not hard to see why.

The romance is sweet. At first I thought it developed too quickly, but weeks pass before things really progresses. Time moves quickly in this novel, but we don't get to see each and every day. Tanvir and Evelayn are a great couple, and very good for each other. I like that Evelayn kept questioning why Tanvir wanted her, and I like how persistent and yet respectful Tanvir was. While this isn't a favorite romance of mine, it is a cute and shippable one.

I also liked Ceren's budding romance with the son of an important lord. So cute!

The ending is pretty cruel and I don't love it, so I won't really talk about it. But it's a cliffhanger. So I may read book two, especially since this is only a duology series.

What I Did Not Like:

There are a bunch of things that I didn't really enjoy about this book. I've already mentioned that the pacing of the story is slow. The beginning is dreadfully boring. You know it's bad when you don't even care that an important character just died (Evelayn's mother). I really only started to get interested when Evelayn's feelings for Tanvir start to progress.

This story is kind of cliche. The girl magically comes into her powers when she turns eighteen. There is a Light Kingdom and a Dark Kingdom (i.e. some kind of balance). They are at war. There is always a war. The King of the Dark Kingdom is an evil caricature. Honestly, this book is full of cliches, and they weren't necessarily welcome ones. I didn't mind, but I also didn't like them.

I'm also very confused about the species of these people. They aren't human - they are DraĆolon, and I have no idea what that means. It would appear that some of them have blue skin and lavender hair and strange-colored features? I'm not really sure. I couldn't get a handle on the physical aspects of the DraĆolon, or anything about them, really. They are magical, immortal, and there is a balance of them. That's about it. I'm very confused about what they actually are though.

Honestly the world-building in general is a little confusing for me, or just completely absent. It seems like a typical, cliche YA fantasy world, and yet, I really couldn't get a good grasp of the world. There were so many strange things that seemed out of place. Maybe I'm missing something?

I'm not all that convinced that there won't be a love triangle! I love Evelayn and Tanvir and I ship them so hard, and there is no hint of a love triangle in this book. But because Lorcan and his brother Lothar also have POVs in this book (in addition to Evelayn and Tanvir - and Ceren too, not that she is part of this), I'm a little nervous. Lorcan seems like an off-his-rocker kind of villain, but Lothar... I could see the author somehow working Lothar into Evelayn's path. They have never met and she has never seen him before, but I just have this feeling. You know? I want to write off Lorcan altogether but somehow, Lothar... he has too much pity and sympathy for Evelayn. Despite not knowing her and her never having seen him before. I'm just not convinced. I don't know though.

The ending! How cruel! Will it stick? I highly doubt it (on several aspects), but how knows... the author has blown the story wide open, which is great if you're the author, but not great if you're the reader. I am not a fan of the ending but I do respect the author for going for such a risky ending.

Would I Recommend It:

I can't say I fully recommend this book, even if you are a YA fantasy fan. It's an interesting concept - a Swan-Lake-inspired fantasy tale about a girl who has loved swans all her life and has taken on the difficult task of ruling the Light Kingdom. This book wasn't totally impressive though, and it wasn't always fun to read (sometimes I was bored or just didn't care). I'd either wait until the second book publishes, since this is part of a duology, or skip the series altogether. While I enjoyed some aspects of the story a lot, I can't say that this is a new favorite or a life-changing story.

Rating:

3.5 stars -> rounded down to 3 stars. It's an okay book, but not great, and certainly not worth gushing over. I really wish I was gushing over the book because I was very prepared to be doing so, but ultimately, I'm a little disappointed. I think I will still read the conclusion though!

Review: Endure by Sara B. Larson

Endure by Sara B. Larson
Book Three of the Defy series
Publisher: Scholastic Press
Publication Date: December 29, 2015
Rating: 4 stars
Source: ARC sent by the publisher

Summary (from Goodreads):

At last, Alexa and King Damian are engaged to be married. But their lives are far from safe. The kingdom of Antion is under siege, and Rylan is a prisoner of the enemy. Even worse, Alexa remains at the mercy of the evil Dansiian Rafe, who controls her mind and can force Alexa to kill or harm Damian at any moment. Despite this, Alexa is determined to rescue Rylan, which soon leads her far from Damian and deep into enemy territory.

When she arrives, what awaits her is deadlier than anything she could have ever imagined: an army of black sorcerers, and a horrifying plot to destroy the world as Alexa knows it. Will she be able to gather the strength to free herself, protect the love of her life, and save the land? Will there ever be true peace?

What I Liked:

What a lovely conclusion to this series! I thought Defy and Ignite were pretty good, but this book is probably my favorite. Another series completed! I'll definitely be looking out for more books by Larson in the future. This series is a light, quick trilogy that you could binge-read over a few days, and fall in love with the characters!

Alex has accepted Damian's proposal, but all is not completely well in Antion. Damian has no idea that Rafe can take over her mind at any minute. What's more, Rylan has been taken by Rafe, and Alexa must bring him back. The war against Dansii spreads to Blevon, and the showdown will be as devastating and as epic as expected.

This book wrapped up really well, exactly as a conclusion novel should. It's intense and had me at the edge of my seat at times, but everything is wrapped up by the end of the book. There are deaths, realizations, and new beginnings at the end, and I loved it all.

Alexa shows her strength and her nine lives in this book. She loves Damian with all of her heat, but she is determined to save Rylan. He saved her in Ignite, and he's like a brother to her; she can't leave him to die. Traveling to Dansii proves to be troublesome, and Alexa has to face King Armando of Dansii, Rafe, and the Summoner. I like Alexa's character growth overall, throughout the series. It's pretty brave of her to accept Damian's proposal, to be willing to step into the role of queen. It's even braver that she is willing to lay it all down to save a friend. At first this didn't sit well with me - she would leave Damian?! But then I thought about if my sister were taken - honestly I would totally leave my boyfriend behind to save a sibling or loved one.

Damian is such a sweetie! He carries so much weight on his shoulders, as a young king and newly affianced man. We often see him struggling, trying to make the right decision for Antion, for his people, for Alexa too. He never tries to cage Alexa in, though he always wants to protect her. I respect him so much for not trying to own her or use his title over her - though he'd be within his rights to do so, technically.

I won't say much about the plot but the story had me hooked - I didn't stop reading until the book was over. I was DYING to know what would happen, who would survive, why Alexa was so important to King Armando, etc. Rest assured that all questions are answered by the end of the book!

The ending is bittersweet but also very uplifting. I say bittersweet because there were many, many deaths (seriously, who survived?!), but there is hope for those that survived. I ADORE the epilogue - don't skip ahead and read the ending! Trust me, the ending makes all the pain of this book (and series) worth it!

What I Did Not Like:

I remember there were a few things that made me raise an eyebrow while I was reading the book, but I can't specifically remember them and they're not really bothering me anything - I really enjoyed this book. Larson took me through ALL the emotions!

Would I Recommend It:

If you've read Defy, or Defy and Ignite, there is no reason not to read Endure! It's an excellent conclusion novel that really makes the characters work for their ending, but there is a good ending. The "body" of Endure's story was thrilling, heart-stopping, and somewhat shocking, and I couldn't read the book fast enough. If you like fantasy, especially fantasy that isn't *too* heavy and reads pretty quickly, give this series a shot!

Rating:

4 stars. I am so happy with the way this book went, and how the series ended! I can't wait to read more by Larson in the future.

This week, my swoon is from Endure by Sara B. Larson!

And then he bent down, crushing his mouth to mine, his arms encircling my body once more, pulling me in to his chest. I pressed myself in to him, winding my arms around his back and clutching his tunic as his lips moved on mine. Desperation, love, and grief melded together into a tide of emotions that consumed me - body and soul.

"I love you," Damian said against my mouth. "I love you, I love you." He pulled back just an inch or two, so that his forehead rested against mine, his eyes squeezed shut. "I'm going to tell you every minute of every day until we both die."

"As much as I enjoyed hearing you say it, I'm not sure everyone else would care for hearing it thousands of times for the rest of our lives," I teased gently, smiling for the first time in weeks - maybe even months.

Endure was great conclusion to the series! I loved all the Damian and Alexa in this book. <3

This week, my swoon is from Ignite by Sara B. Larson!

My gaze dropped to his mouth, and then he was pulling my face forward, slowly, so that I was weak with need by the time his lips met mine. I immediately melted into the gentleness of his touch. This was all I'd ever wanted and never thought I deserved. As his mouth moved on mine, all the longing and love I'd suppressed for long surged up, urging me closer to him. Ignoring my back, and my dirty clothes, and everything else except Damian, I clung to his shoulders and pulled him toward me, until his body pressed against mine. He carefully wrapped his free arm around me, trying to avoid my back wound. But I didn't care about the pain - it was just part of me at this point. I kissed him harder, deeper, wanting more. The taste of him, the smell of him, the feel of Damian was everywhere. He was my everything.

Review: Ignite by Sara B. Larson

Ignite by Sara B. Larson
Book Two of the Defy series
Publisher: Scholastic
Publication Date: December 30, 2014
Rating: 4 stars
Source: ARC sent by the publisher

Summary (from Goodreads):

Murder, kidnapping, and forbidden romance abound in this thrilling sequel to Sara B. Larson's acclaimed YA debut, DEFY.

Alexa continues to harbor a secret love for the newly crowned King Damian, yet she remains by his side as his guard and ever committed to helping him rebuild Antion and reclaim the hope of Antion's people. However, when a new threat to Damian and his kingdom emerges, and blame is cast on the once friendly nation of Blevon, Alexa knows things are not what they seem. Once again the fate of her country hangs in the balance. Will Alexa be able to protect her king and uncover the true enemy -- before it's too late?

What I Liked:

I know I gave this book and Defy the same rating, but this one is definitely better than the first book (and I mean that nicely, not snidely). I liked Defy a lot, but I wanted more from the story, and less from the romance. One reason why I loved Ignite as much as I do is because the romance is much more clear-cut (thank God).

In Ignite, a new threat has arrived. Blevon seems to be threatening Antion, burning villages and sending parties to attack the king. Meanwhile, a beautiful noblewoman named Vera has been given refuge at Antion, someone much more suited for King Damian. But Alexa knows that Vera has a secret motive to seduce the king, just like she knows that Blevon can't be behind the attacks - someone much more powerful must be manipulating the country. But how many players are in the game, and how many threats can Alexa uncover?

Larson up the ante in this book, putting Antion and Blevon at odds. Everyone in Antion wants to go to war with Blevon, but Damian (and Alexa) don't believe that Blevon is at fault - perhaps a black sorcerer is. All the while, Damian is falling into the web of Vera, who seems to have power of her own - or is Damian just that captivated by her? Not to mention that one of the royals is held for ransom, and by a very powerful enemy... who wants Alexa in exchange for the royal.

Phew! Lots of crazy going on. Plenty of deceit, ransom, murder, angst, heartbreak, and action. I read this book in two sittings (only getting up for lunch and things), and it went by really quickly. The plot is very fast-paced and interesting.

The romance - let me talk about that for a bit. It might seem like the romance is all sorts of twisted, right? Damian, Alexa, and Rylan were locked in some sort of weird love triangle in Defy, but no longer. Personally, I didn't think it was much of a love triangle at all - to me, Damian always seemed to have Alexa's heart.

But then there's the matter of Vera seducing Damian in this book - pshh. We can deduce that this is a plot twist of a sort, with no real feelings involved. I'm all for Alexa and Damian in this book (and series), though I don't mind Rylan as much as I did in Defy (hate Vera though). The romance between Damian and Alexa is very angry and passionate and raw and sweet all at once - love!

I like Alexa more in this book. She continues to show her toughness, her strength, her grit, but she also breaks down a little and shows a softer side. To Damian, whom she really loves, but she pushes him away, thinking of what's best for the kingdom. To Jax (Damian's little brother), who wants to learn to be as brave as she. To her friends, and even those who aren't her friends. I like that Larson really spearheaded the issue of Alexa being a female in the King's guard - the author brings this up a lot, which makes the issue more authentic and plausible.

I really like Damian, though sometimes I find it hard to believe that he is the King. He seems and acts too young sometimes - not in an immature way, but in a, well, young way. However, I so want my own Damian. Is that too much to ask for?

The book ends on an okay note, though there is definitely room for another novel. It's not a cliffhanger, not quite, but there NEEDS to be more to the story, to resolve the conflict at the end that wan't quite wrapped up. The book has a bit of a bittersweetness [is that a word? Should be] to it, but not to the point where you like OMG THIS SUCKS. Just... book three. There needs to be a book three.

What I Did Not Like:

I can't think of anything specific that I didn't like - I wish the author could have included just a little more background of the events that happened in book one? Only because I really could not remember many things. For example, Alexa's parents, their death... this comes up again, in Ignite, and I wish I had remembered more from Defy. Of course, this could just be me!

Would I Recommend It:

If you read book one, you MUST read book two. It gets better in book two - take that as you may. If the romance bothered you in book one, relax, it clears up in book two (in a really obvious way). If the fantasy bothered you, then keep reading because things get rocky between countries. Basically, it wouldn't be a bad idea to keep reading this series, whether you liked book one or not!

Rating:

4 stars. I really hope there is a book three, because this series just CAN'T END YET. I mean, it could, but I feel like there is a much more fulfilling ending to come... so, everyone, cross your fingers for a book three announcement!

The Valentines Winter Formal: Sara B. Larson

Welcome to day three of The Valentines Winter Formal! Today, I have a mini interview with four YA Valentines authors: Lynne Matson, Sara B. Larson Jen McConnel, and Bethany Hagen. I'm exclusively featuring Sara B. Larson, author of Defy! Be sure to read the entire post, for lots of new content, and some exciting things happening soon with Sara and several other lovely authors!

Meet Sara!

Alyssa: Sara, you and I are huge fans of Kristin Cashore. I've seen reviews that have compared your book to Cashore's books. What comparisons do YOU see between your book and Cashore's books, besides the genre? :)

Sara: Yes, I ADORE Kristin Cashore’s books. I think I’ve mentioned to you before, it completely blows me away to have my book compared to hers. I am just a huge fangirl of hers. One aspect of her writing that I love is how complex her characters are—that they are strong and capable and talented (wouldn’t it be amazing to see Katsa and Alexa spar??), but they are also hurting, and confused, sometimes even broken. Despite their strengths, they are still seeking who they truly are and what they truly want in life. I think that is true of my characters as well. Alexa is a determined, strong character, but she also has a deep internal struggle with all of the loss she’s endured in her life. She also has a difficult time reconciling the girl she’s had to bury to survive, with the person she’s pretending to be—especially when it comes to her feelings for Damian and Rylan. I also love how Kristin creates such a strong mood and setting in her books. I hope that readers will feel the same way about DEFY; that they will feel like they are there in the jungles of Antion with Alexa.

Alyssa: What alternate title(s) would you choose for Defy

Sara: I originally called it DAUGHTER OF WAR, but Scholastic suggested a one-word title. I wracked my brain for one word that embodied this book. When I thought of DEFY I just knew it was perfect—and the team at Scholastic agreed!

Alyssa: I like both, but Defy definitely fits! What's one thing you found difficult about writing Defy

Sara: When I was in the very early stages of drafting DEFY, I hit a wall and ended up putting it down to work on a different book. It wasn’t until I realized one of the main characters was keeping a MAJOR secret from me that I was able to figure out the rest of the plot. After I discovered that one secret, the rest of the book flew out of me.

Alyssa: If you could be a character in Defy, which would you be and why?

Sara: I’d totally pick Alexa. I’d love to be that awesome with a sword, and who wouldn’t want to be in her shoes with Rylan and Prince Damian around??

Alyssa: Giggles. You're so right. If you had to rewrite Defy, what's one thing you would change?

Sara: Wow, that’s a tough question. Every author I know could continue revising their book until the end of time if given the chance. There’s always something that could be tweaked. When I go back to read through it to find details for the sequel, I still find little things I could change. But I’m so grateful to have had such an awesome editor to work with (Lisa Sandell); she helped me make DEFY the best that it could be, and honestly, any changes I’d make now wouldn’t change the book. It would just be word adjustments that probably wouldn’t really alter it one bit.

About the Author:

Sara B. Larson wrote her first book in second grade about a woman who had a premature baby, complete with a "to scale" drawing of the baby's size—while her mom was pregnant. To say she was a bit precocious is putting it lightly. Now that she's an adult, she writes books for teens that have magic and romance and kick-butt girls (and very few premature babies). She lives in Utah with her husband, two young sons and baby girl. She writes during naptime and the hours when most people are sleeping. Her husband claims she should have a degree in "the art of multitasking." On occasion you will find her hiding in a bubble bath with a book and some Swedish Fish.

About the Book:

Defy by Sara B. Larson
Book One of the Defy series
Publisher: Scholastic
Publication Date: January 7, 2014

Official Summary:

A lush and gorgeously written debut, packed with action, intrigue, and heart-racing romance.

Alexa Hollen is a fighter. Forced to disguise herself as a boy and serve in the king's army, Alex uses her quick wit and fierce sword-fighting skills to earn a spot on the elite prince's guard. But when a powerful sorcerer sneaks into the palace in the dead of night, even Alex, who is virtually unbeatable, can't prevent him from abducting her, her fellow guard and friend Rylan, and Prince Damian, taking them through the treacherous wilds of the jungle and deep into enemy territory.

The longer Alex is held captive with both Rylan and the prince, the more she realizes that she is not the only one who has been keeping dangerous secrets. And suddenly, after her own secret is revealed, Alex finds herself confronted with two men vying for her heart: the safe and steady Rylan, who has always cared for her, and the dark, intriguing Damian. With hidden foes lurking around every corner, is Alex strong enough to save herself and the kingdom she's sworn to protect?

MY GENERAL QUESTION:

Summarize your book using lyrics from a well-known song (or songs)!

Lynne Matson:

Ok, so you know music is my thing right? This may be my favorite question EVER.

Contenders included A Beautiful Lie by Thirty Seconds to Mars (but it's more for Thad), and If I Die Young by the Band Perry (but it's more for Charley).

In the end, I chose Ready to Fall by Rise Against:

Hold on slow down again from the top now and tell me everything
I know I've been gone for what seems like forever
But I'm here now waiting
To convince you that I'm not a ghost or a stranger
But closer than you think
She said, "just go on to what you
Pretend is your life but
Please don't die on me"

Wings won't take me
Heights don't phase me
So take a step
But don't look down
Take a step

Now I'm standing on the rooftop ready to fall
I think I'm at the edge now but I could be wrong
I'm standing on the rooftop ready to fall

*Honorable Mention to The Island (Part 1) Dawn by Pendulum (I would've picked this song but it's not well-known:D). I had to include it because it's from Nil's point of view…and creepy:

You arrive
In the rising sun
The hidden passenger
That I've been taking
Close your eyes
Let's forget again
As you drag me down
I will take you in

Sara B Larson:

I have to have music playing while I'm writing, so for me, it's choosing which songs to use that is difficult! One song that I really loved while writing Defy was COSMIC LOVE by Florence + the Machine...

And in the dark, I can hear your heartbeat

I tried to find the sound

But then it stopped, and I was in the darkness,

So darkness I became

 ....

I took the stars from my eyes, and then I made a map

And knew that somehow I could find my way back

Then I heard your heart beating, you were in the darkness too

So I stayed in the darkness with you

The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out

You left me in the dark

No dawn, no day, I'm always in this twilight

In the shadow of your heart

I think that can be symbolic of many different things in DEFY and what Alexa deals with, especially with the losses she endures and the love she feels for a certain character in the book. I also listened to Canto Alla Vita by Josh Groban/The Corrs. The translation of part of it is:

I sing to life and to its tragic beauty

To pain and to strife, but all that dances through me

The rise and the fall; I've lived through it all

Alexa truly has lived through many things, and she absolutely rises through it, staying strong and doing what she must do to survive—to live. I just adore those lyrics. I also just love the powerful, haunting qualities of both of these songs.

Jen McConnel:

The song I play when I'm working on this series pretty much sums it up: "It's the end of the world as we know it...and I feel fine."

Bethany Hagen:

Here's a sample from one of my favorite songs, "The Royal We" by the Silversun Pickups.  Like any SP song, I'm not sure what it's really about, but with the talk of a father's will and looking over your shoulder, it's a perfect fit for Landry Park.

Can it please you still
Renaming your father's will?
Or does it make you ill
...
To feel safe again look over your shoulder
Carefully look over your shoulder

You said you believe but believing won't fly
Right before you hit your prime
That's when we fell in love but not the first time.
