Swoon Thursday (#272): Altered by Jennifer Rush

This week, my swoon is from Altered by Jennifer Rush!

His hand went to my waist as his eyes met mine.  His fingers found bare flesh beneath the hem of my T-shirt. Every nerve ending in my body thrummed in response.

"Sam," I said, though I couldn't pull together the rest of what I wanted to say, all the things I should have said.

He leaned in and brushed his lips against mine, feather-light at first, then more eager. My heart thundered as he exhaled, like he'd been holding the air in his lungs for far too long.

My hands walked up his biceps as his fingers threaded through my hair, sending ribbons of heat down to my skull. He pressed into me as it he couldn't get close enough, and I pressed back. Because I wasn't close enough. Because I'd spent the last several years of my life wishing I could be closer.

I was rereading this book this week, and couldn't help but share a swoon from it. This is one of my favorite books of all time. =)

Swoon Thursday (#243): Devils & Thieves by Jennifer Rush

This week, my swoon is from Devils & Thieves by Jennifer Rush!

(I've chosen two swoons! This first one is an "almost" swoon between Crowe and Jemmie. I found it swoony. Just me?)

I cut him off. "I should have walked home."

I moved past him for the living room. His hand snapped out and grabbed me by the wrist. Heat spread out from his touch, engulfing me, and I wondered if he felt it, too, this volcano that erupted between us whenever we touched. Only some of it had to do with magic, but I was already breathing it in as it snaked out in amber streaks around us, dark and dangerous and pulsing.

He hadn't touched me purposefully in a long time.

- ARC, pages 59-60

(This is from Crowe and Jemmie's past - a flashback!)

"I miss this," I'd told him that night. "I miss you."

He'd glanced at me, his stupidly handsome face painted in the glow of the moon. I recognized that glint in his eyes right away because I felt it, too. I even had a name for it: hunger.

"Oh, Jemmie Carmichael," he'd said, and then he kissed me, hard and fast, his hands ghosting over my skin.

When he pulled away, just enough to get a breath, lick his already wet lips, I shivered and tangled my fingers in his hair, pulling him back in.

I adored this book! It has been a while since Jennifer Rush published a new one, and this one did not disappoint. Check out her Altered trilogy too!

Review: Devils & Thieves by Jennifer Rush

Devils & Thieves by Jennifer Rush
Book One of the Devils & Thieves series
Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
Publication Date: October 3, 2017
Rating: 4 stars
Source: ARC sent by the publisher

Summary (from Goodreads):

Eighteen-year-old Jemmie Carmichael has grown up surrounded by magic in the quiet town of Hawthorne, New York. In her world, magic users are called "kindled," and Jemmie would count herself among them if only she could cast a simple spell without completely falling apart. It doesn't help that she was also recently snubbed by Crowe, the dangerous and enigmatic leader of the Black Devils kindled motorcycle gang and the unofficial head of their turf.

When the entire kindled community rolls into Hawthorne for an annual festival, a rumour begins spreading that someone is practising forbidden magic. Then people start to go missing. With threats closing in from every side, no one can be trusted. Jemmie and Crowe will have to put aside their tumultuous history to find their loved ones, and the only thing that might save them is the very flaw that keeps Jemmie from fully harnessing her magic. For all her years of feeling useless, Jemmie may just be the most powerful kindled of all.

What I Liked:

It has been forever and a day since we got a new Jennifer Rush novel! Well, not that long, but her last book, Reborn, published nearly three years ago. I loved the Altered series so much. Altered remains one of my favorite Young Adult books of all time. When I saw that Rush was publishing a new book, I knew immediately that I wanted it. I didn't even need to know what it was about. As it would turn out, it's about magic and motorcycle clubs and it was AWESOME.

Jemmie Carmichael has always been surrounded by magic. She is one of the "kindled", magic users who live among non-magic users (drecks). Jemmie is a locant, like her father, but she hasn't been able to cast a spell in years. Jemmie feels like an outsider in the kindled world, and especially among the Black Devils, the kindled motorcycle club of the town of Hawthorne. Her best friend Alex is the daughter of the former president of the Devils, and the sister the of current president, Crowe. Crowe took over when his and Alex's father died of an accident that Crowe is convinced was not an accident. Crowe is dangerous and ruthless, and all of the kindled know it. The entire kindled community comes to Hawthorne for the annual festival of the kindled, which is hosted by the Black Devils this year. But something strange is happening; people from each MC club goes missing, and tensions start to rise. All fingers point to Crowe, but someone else's magic is at work. Jemmie and Crowe will have to uncover who the traitor among them is, before it's too late.

Does this book sound kickbutt? It really was. I love stories that are set in modern contemporary times, but involve magic. There is something about this type of supernatural/paranormal story that appeals to me. Throw in a motorcycle club, and I'm sold. As an adult romance reader, I LOVE romance novels involving a guy in a motorcycle club. Maybe it's something about him being patched in, and she isn't, and he has to protect her but also stay loyal to his club. Anyway, I'm rambling, but I love motorcycle clubs, and I love magic in contemporary stories, so this book really worked for me, on the world-building level. It was so cool to learn about the different types of magic. There are many, like Jemmie's (locant), and Crowe's (venemon). Crowe's is my favorite!

The back of the ARC has a comparison to the Beautiful Creatures series, which I'm now more inclined to try. I'd never really been dying to read those books, though they'd caught my interest before. If they're anything like Devils & Thieves? Then I'll give the series a shot.

I had no trouble liking Jemmie, from the start. She feels like an outsider in her own community, because she can't wield her magic like everyone else can. She isn't part of the Black Devils motorcycle club, even though she could become a prospect, at eighteen. She doesn't think she belongs, and she tries to hide her loneliness. In truth, she has a hard time with her locant magic, but she also has a sensitivity to magic and she has never told anyone. This sensitivity makes her sick sometimes, and she drinks to take off the edge. All of this makes her feel even more isolated, since she doesn't want anyone to pity her if they knew about her sensitivity to magic. Jemmie is a tough and strong person, even when she is bitter, hurt, and struggling within herself. I really felt for her and understood her. With her father having left her and her mom, the boy she loves rejecting her, and her magic not responding to her, her life is pretty bad.

Jemmie is one of a kind and I adored her. I loved her interactions with Crowe; all of the interactions were charged with tension, hurt, and a little bitterness, after everything between them. We don't get to know exactly what happened between them at first - Rush reveals that information slowly.

Crowe is a few years older than Jemmie, and already he is the president of the Black Devils. He takes his position in the club very seriously, and stops at nothing to protect the members. He is ruthless and deadly and he has no problem laying down the law or putting down insurrection. Crowe is to be feared, and all of the kindled know that. But Jemmie knows that he is grieving, given that his father died somewhat recently, and Crowe thinks it wasn't an accident. Honestly? I like the dark, dangerous edge that Crowe has. He earned his brutal reputation, and you can't help but respect it. He has done what he needed to do for the club, and he has no fear or remorse.

This story isn't just about Jemmie, or Crowe, or Jemmie and Crowe. There are so many other important secondary characters that I loved. Alex (Crowe's sister and Jemmie's best friend) is such a sweetheart. She is total trouble and always seems to be wreaking havoc somewhere. But she is also a solid best friend and loyal to a fault. I loved her friendship with Jemmie - they are so supportive and good to each other. I also liked several members of the Devils - Hardy and Flynn, for example, who were funny and pretty cool. Old Lady Jane was creepy but good people.

I loved the romance between Crowe and Jemmie, even though there was basically nothing going on between them physically, in this book. One single thing happened in the recent past, and Crowe rejected Jemmie, and that pretty much ruined their relationship for the next year. Now, they antagonize each other in every interaction. There is anger and bitterness between them, a good amount of angst that I surprisingly really got behind. I lived for their high-intensity interactions - so much tension! It's so obvious that Jemmie loves Crowe, and eventually it becomes obvious that Crowe loves Jemmie. Crowe is incredibly protective and alpha-male-y, and I liked this about him (though I'm sure there are some that don't love the alpha male thing).

I will mention A Thing about the romance below.

The climax of this story takes form after people start disappearing - including Alex. By the time the climax of the story comes about, we find out a big thing that was pretty obvious to me from the start, but was still a game-changer when it was revealed. The story ends on a wrapped up but not resolved note. This book is part of a series, so it's okay! It's not a cliffhanger ending, but there is definitely more to come. And I am looking forward to that more!

What I Did Not Like:

There is kind of a love triangle this book. You're probably thinking, whaaaaaat, Alyssa, there is a love triangle in this book and you still LIKED the book?! (I hate love triangles with a passion, in case anyone didn't know. I usually rate books very poorly when I discover a love triangle, regardless of how good the story could have been.) Here me out.

I knew that the "other guy" was not The One, and I knew there was something... off about him. I don't want to venture too much into the spoiler zone, but to me, I knew from the start that there was something vague and off-putting. This guy is Jemmie's friend (emphasis on "friend"), but no one knows that he and Jemmie are friends because he is from a rival MC club that is currently in a truce with the Devils, but they are still on rocky terms with the Devils. This friend very obviously wants more from Jemmie, but Jemmie is very hung up on Crowe.

The thing is, at no point in this book are Crowe and Jemmie together. Crowe owes Jemmie nothing, and Jemmie owes Crowe nothing. They never dated. They never hooked up (technically). Yet they love each other... but Crowe had his reasons for rejecting Jemmie. Anyway, my point to this is, Jemmie and her friend are friends. The friend wanted more. Jemmie didn't really know if she wanted more (and it turns out, she never did, and that becomes clear when things are revealed).

Just trust me when I say that this isn't really a love triangle. It's kind of there and I hated that it was there but the reason for it being there made a lot of sense and I could look past it because of those reasons. There was no romantic feelings on Jemmie's part (to her friend), and it was so obvious that she wanted Crowe and only Crowe.

Anyway, so it's kind of a dislike because the "love triangle" does in fact exist to an extent, but it wasn't bad enough to bother me, and the purpose of the other guy made sense. Also, for what it's worth, there is no need to worry about an actual love triangle in future books. It's not going to be a problem, if you catch my drift.

Would I Recommend It:

I highly recommend this book, if you love magic and motorcycle clubs and some really passionate/angry banter between the heroine and hero. I really can't wait to see more from Crowe and Jemmie in the next book. They are fire and fire together! I wanted more physical "interactions" between them in this book (if you know what I mean) but I'll just expect more in book two.

Rating:

4.5 stars -> rounded down to 4 stars. I adored this book and would have rated it five stars, had it not been for the thing I talked about above. Still, I think this book was so excellent and I loved. I'll definitely be rereading my favorites parts soon! And swooning over all of the non-swoon between Crowe and Jemmie. Hopefully there will be swoon to swoon over, in book two!

Honestly, I will read anything Jennifer Rush writes! Her debut series was awesome - Altered was one of my favorite books of 2013. It's been a while since her last book was published, and I have been anxiously awaiting this new one for quite some time! I believe it used to be called Rising Three.

This week, my swoon is from Erased by Jennifer Rush!

I licked my lips. Sam’s attention shifted downward, and heat touched my cheeks. I unclenched my hands, moving beneath him.
His hold lessened, and I felt his legs loosen. I seized the opening, arching my back. He lost his balance and pitched to the side, so I followed the movement, rolling us over so I pinned him.

Finally, he relaxed and grinned. It was a treat I didn't get often, and I found it ridiculously hot.

“Better?” I asked with an arch of my eyebrows.
“Better. But we still need to talk about what’s going-“

I cut him off with the press of my lips, and his hands moved to the curve of my butt, pulling me closer. I dropped forward as Sam’s mouth sunk lower, down my jaw, down my neck to my collarbone.

Review: Erased by Jennifer Rush

Erased by Jennifer Rush
Book Two of the Altered series
Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
Publication Date: January 7, 2014
Rating: 4 stars
Source: ARC borrowed from a friend (thank you, Hannah!)

Summary (from Goodreads):

They thought they had escaped. They were wrong.

After fleeing the Branch with Sam, Cas, and Nick, Anna is trying to make sense of the memories resurfacing from her old life. At the same time, she's learning how to survive in hiding, following Sam's rules: Don't draw attention to yourself. Always carry a weapon. Know your surroundings. Watch your back.

Then a figure from Anna's childhood reappears. Is it a Branch setup, or could it be the reunion Anna has hoped for? Uncertain of where her loyalties lie, Anna must fight to learn the truth -- before she is betrayed again. Ultimately, the answers hinge on one question: What was the real reason her memories were erased?

Jennifer Rush delivers a thrilling sequel to Altered in a novel packed with mysteries, lies, and surprises that are sure to keep readers guessing until the last page is turned.

What I Liked:

Oh, how I waited for you, Erased. It's been a very long time since I read Altered. I think it was the first book I read this year - it's fitting that Erased will be one of my last books read for 2013 (#167 of about 180 books projected). What an amazing series! One of the best things about these books is that while I really remember Altered (I re-read that book so many times), I jumped right into Erased, without having to re-read Altered.

I'll freely admit that I loved the first book more than this book. Altered was SO AMAZING. It's definitely going on my top ten of 2013 at the end of the year. This book (Erased), to me, wasn't as awesome as its predecessor - but I'm not saying it was awful or anything. This book is fabulous! An awesome sequel to one of my favorite series. And a thriller, at that! I don't read too many thrillers, unfortunately.

A few months have passed, between book one and book two (I believe it is two months... I hope I'm not completely off). Anna is now struggling with flashbacks, just like Nick and Sam had been. She remembers bits and pieces of her old life, with her sister, and sometimes the boys. But her flashbacks are often painful... indicating that something terrible happened in her past, something that the Altered program really did not want her to remember.

The plot of this book follows Anna and her flashbacks. Two people from Anna's past reenter her life, and one key person from the program shows up as well. Things are not as they seem, with the program, the flashbacks, the people from Anna's past. Trust no one seems to be the general mantra...

I feel like not as much happened in this book, like in Altered. However, the plot was very interesting, and I felt engaged in the story. I wanted to know what Anna was remembering. I wanted to know what was up with the Altered program. I wanted to know more about Nick. It's kind of awesome how Rush is making Nick more and more of a primary character in this series - and I believe the third book in this series is in Nick point-of-view. I'm not one hundred percent sure though.

The romance in this book is present, but not as much as it was in book one. Book one didn't have much romance in it either - meaning, Rush didn't make it the forefront of the novel. I like this though. But in this novel, the romance is present even less. There is a distance between Sam and Anna, but we know why, as the story goes on. I liked the romance in this book, but there aren't many swoony scenes in this book.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book! It's definitely a great sequel - probably one of my favorites. I would make this one a priority, if you liked Altered. I LOVED Altered, and I'm glad I got the chance to read Erased. But hey - it is totally worth the wait!

What I Did Not Like:

I can't really pinpoint what exactly I did not like about this book. I think it's because this book is on the short side, and while a good amount of action happens, it feels like there wasn't much to it. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the story and the plot. But I feel like less happens in this book than in book one.

Also, Dani. Shaking my head right now. You are silly, Anna.

Would I Recommend It:

DEFINITELY! I loved Altered, and I think Rush does book one justice with Erased. Book one was better in my opinion, but book two is so great. If you read and liked/loved book one, and then you will definitely enjoy book two. And then you'll be joining me in begging for book three. Yes - begging!

Rating:

4.5 stars -> rounded down to 4 stars. A really great sequel to this series! I cannot wait to read the third book.

Review: Altered by Jennifer Rush

Altered (Altered, #1)

Altered by Jennifer Rush
Book One of the Altered series
Publisher: Little, Brown and Co.
Publication Date: January 1, 2013
Rating: 5 stars
Source: Won a giveaway

I got this book from a wonderful author, who pre-ordered it for me. I am going to be honest - I may have asked for this book because of the cover. I usually try not to do things like that, but the synopsis actually seemed interesting as well. It seemed like a win-win situation. Nevertheless, I was not disappointed.

Summary (from Goodreads):

When you can’t trust yourself, who can you believe?

Everything about Anna’s life is a secret. Her father works for the Branch at the helm of its latest project: monitoring and administering treatments to the four genetically altered boys in the lab below their farmhouse. There’s Nick, Cas, Trev . . . and Sam, who’s stolen Anna’s heart. When the Branch decides it’s time to take the boys, Sam stages an escape, killing the agents sent to retrieve them.

Anna is torn between following Sam or staying behind in the safety of her everyday life. But her father pushes her to flee, making Sam promise to keep her away from the Branch, at all costs. There’s just one problem. Sam and the boys don’t remember anything before living in the lab—not even their true identities.

Now on the run, Anna soon discovers that she and Sam are connected in more ways than either of them expected. And if they’re both going to survive, they must piece together the clues of their past before the Branch catches up to them and steals it all away.

What I Liked:

First, I would like to say that this book is not a contemporary, or a dystopia. It is a thriller, as said by the author. And what a thriller it was.

The characters: I was almost immediately intrigued by the four boys in Anna's basement. I liked how each boy's personality was distinct. I have no favorite of the four, because, despite the duration of the book, and the ending, I liked them all. Anna herself was an intriguing character. I liked the way she thought and reacted. Many times I have difficulty understanding the motives of teenage heroines in Young Adult novels. Anna was a truly likable character, with good instincts and a strong will. She handled things, no matter what they were, with dignity and a clear head (most of the time).

The plot surprised me. In a way, I expected some things (which I will not mention), but I did not expect many points towards the end. The plot is solid, in my opinion, and by solid, I mean not filled with gaping holes and that make me wonder whether Jennifer Rush knows where she is going with everything. No, the plot was superb.

Romance: NO LOVE TRIANGLE YAY!!! That I can see, there is no love triangle. I hope everything stays this way for the rest of the series. I am a love triangle hater in almost all cases, and I am extremely happy to see no love triangle in this book.

And can I say how happy I am about the science in this book. Go genetic engineering! I love the addition of science in Young Adult books, and Jennifer Rush did an excellent job of utilizing genetic engineering into this book.

Also, this book was engrossing. I read about half of it on an hour-long car ride to Northern Virginia, and the second half on the way back. I usually have to put the book down and absorb, but not with Altered. I found myself unable to rip myself away from the book. I needed this book in many ways; with my senior year of high school completely taking over my life, I needed a book that was fresh, original, captivating, and enthralling. I got all of those things and more with Altered.

What I Did Not Like:

That is ended? I know this sounds ridiculous, but there was not much that I did not like. I have soooo many questions, but I have a very good feeling that Jennifer Rush is going to answer at least some of them in the next book, and if not that book, then the third book. I cannot complain with Altered!

Would I Recommend It:

YES YES YES SO MUCH!!!! I am already declaring this book one of my favorites of 2013. It is THAT GOOD.

Rating:

5 stars (can I give it more?)

GO READ THIS BOOK NOW!!! Trust me, it is worth it. Not just for the shirtless boys (although there is a lot of that. *wink wink*)
