Waiting on Wednesday (#198): Midnight Jewel by Richelle Mead

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week, I'm featuring:

Midnight Jewel by Richelle Mead
Book Two of The Glittering Court series
Publisher: Razorbill
Publication Date: April 25, 2017

Summary (from Goodreads):

In MIDNIGHT JEWEL, Richelle Mead goes beyond the glitz and glamour of the Glittering Court, delving into the dark, political underbelly of Cape Triumph through the eyes of one girl who dares to fight for her freedom.

A refugee of war, Mira was cast out of her home country and thrust into another, where the conditions were inhospitable at best. In a life-altering twist of fate, she is given the chance to escape once more, and she takes it, joining the Glittering Court.

Both a school and a business venture, the Glittering Court is designed to transform impoverished girls into upper-class ladies who appear destined for powerful and wealthy marriages in the New World. There, Mira finds herself subjected to persecution, not only from her fellow Glittering Court jewels, but from her suitors, as well—men she would potentially be expected to give her life to.

By day, she goes through the motions, learning the etiquette and customs that will help to earn her anonymity, even making a couple true friends in the process, the forthright ladies’ maid Adelaide and the ambitious laundress Tamsin. But by night, Mira hatches a different plan entirely—one that, if exposed, could get her hanged in the highest court of Adoria.

MIDNIGHT JEWEL is the extraordinary story of a girl with few options who courageously forges a new path, finding love, passion, lifelong friendships, and maybe even a way to freedom.

To be honest, I'm not dying to read this book, but if it falls into my lap, then I'll be reading it for sure! I liked The Glittering Court

  14. Sshhh...don't tell anyone, but I didn't finish the Vampire Academy series. I lost interest in it after four books, so I've been hesitant to read anything else from Richelle Mead. But I hope you love this one!

  15. Mira was probably my favourite character from The Glittering Court, and I think that going into this one I would be better equipped knowing what to expect and the world already has a shape for me so I think this one could be a more enjoyable read. I'm curious to know what Mira's been getting up to and where it will take her in this companion novel!

    2. Yes! To the companion novel trend. I love that you can take it or leave it and everything is still resolved for the main characters of the original book. It's great not to have to commit to an entire series!

    3. Low commitment is the best! Not from a publishing standpoint, but definitely from a reader standpoint. :D

    1. Interesting... this series is the first I've read by her (and Soundless too), so I don't know much about the VA series and such. I'm glad you like her books!

  18. There were so many reviews that were unfavorable for the first book that I removed it from my list. I thought about borrowing it from the library a time or two, but decided against even trying to read it. Those covers are gorgeous, though.
