This week, my swoon is from #scandal by Sarah Ockler!

... I finally turn to face him. His eyes fill with sadness as he studies my hair, my skin, my mouth like this is the last time we'll ever see each other, five seconds before the earth explodes. His lips are full and pink and I'm wondering what they might taste like and then, with the horse looking on and Cassiopeia watching from the night sky, Cole presses his mouth to mine. Every cell in my body collides, a million tiny explosions under my skin.

The swirl behind my belly button deepens, and when I close my eyes, the sky shatters and the stars fall, pinpricks of white-hot light landing on my shoulders like glitter. Cole's mouth is cool and sweet, apples and beer. I lean closer and wrap my arms around his neck. His hands are on me, one tangled in my hair, one pressing the bottle to my back, and I'm lost.

Spinning, falling.

About the Book:

#scandal by Sarah Ockler
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Publication Date: June 17, 2014

Summary (from Goodreads):

Lucy’s learned some important lessons from tabloid darling Jayla Heart’s all-too-public blunders: Avoid the spotlight, don’t feed the Internet trolls, and keep your secrets secret. The policy has served Lucy well all through high school, so when her best friend Ellie gets sick before prom and begs her to step in as Cole’s date, she accepts with a smile, silencing about ten different reservations. Like the one where she’d rather stay home shredding online zombies. And the one where she hates playing dress-up. And especially the one where she’s been secretly in love with Cole since the dawn of time.

When Cole surprises her at the after party with a kiss under the stars, it’s everything Lucy has ever dreamed of… and the biggest BFF deal-breaker ever. Despite Cole’s lingering sweetness, Lucy knows they’ll have to ’fess up to Ellie. But before they get the chance, Lucy’s own Facebook profile mysteriously explodes with compromising pics of her and Cole, along with tons of other students’ party indiscretions. Tagged. Liked. And furiously viral.

By Monday morning, Lucy’s been branded a slut, a backstabber, and a narc, mired in a tabloid-worthy scandal just weeks before graduation.

Lucy’s been battling undead masses online long enough to know there’s only one way to survive a disaster of this magnitude: Stand up and fight. Game plan? Uncover and expose the Facebook hacker, win back her best friend’s trust, and graduate with a clean slate.

There’s just one snag—Cole. Turns out Lucy’s not the only one who’s been harboring unrequited love...

    1. It's a bit hopeless in the beginning, Lucy and Cole's relationship. But not for long!

  7. I was never really involved in scandal at school...no-wait, I was. Seventh grade. Small Texas town, like about 7,000 people. At the end of 6th grade my math teacher asked me to manage the football teams, since he'd be coaching the next year. I agreed - and my so-so friend decided she wanted to join in too because she liked about 3 guys in 8th grade, and probably another 3 in 7th grade. He agreed to let her help out too. Her mother worked with my mother, and any time Deanna was ever at my house under grandparent supervision, whatever happened always got back to my mom - every single sibling squabble. I finally realized it was her doing the "sharing," but thought we were growing up. After we were mostly through the season, one day I was walking in the courtyard and a bunch of 8th graders were giving me these crazy looks. One guy, who we both had crushes on, said across the courtyard "Preggo your eggo?" I had no clue what he was talking about. I soon found out my "friend" Deanna started a rumor, and even got one my cousin who was on the 8th grade team to help her spread it, that I was pregnant by one of the football boys. Fortunately it quickly died down (although something like that, I don't know why - perhaps nobody really believed it when they thought about it). But I was livid. My friends shunned her, and she quickly found herself slumming it with the girls at the bottom of the barrel, so to speak. I never really talked to her after that, and definitely didn't trust her. As I write this I realize I never told my mother about her rumor...I wonder if that would have changed her opinion that I just "dumped" Deanna as my friend.

BUT the scandal I was going to tell before I remembered I did have my own scandal: also in 7th grade, we had a new kid come a few weeks late. She was very weird, very smart, but very obnoxious and quite frankly, rude - to everyone. (In fact, one of my high school Spanish teachers, who had his PhD, knocked her off her pedestal in class one day.) Anyway, her behavior did nothing to spare her the "new kid" phenomenon: She and I had the first class together, Spanish. There were about 30-35 kids in the class. There was a cricket in our classroom. She made our teacher stop class so she could take the cricket outside. Our class was in an wing outside, so the door led directly into the courtyard. When she came back in, there was a cricket antennae sticking out the side of her mouth! Needless to say, by lunch EVERYONE knew. Some stupid kid even confronted her and asked her about it, which she adamantly denied, but there were at least 30 other kids who saw her come back in with that black antennae hanging out the side of her mouth.
