Blog Tour and Giveaway: Seducing the Fireman by Jennifer Bonds

Welcome to the blog tour for Seducing the Fireman by Jennifer Bonds! I absolutely adored Seducing the Fireman, and the previous book in the series (Once Upon a Power Play). Today, I have Jennifer Bonds on the blog, and a steamy excerpt!

Writing a Unique Fireman Hero in a Romance Novel
By Jennifer Bonds

Hi, Alyssa! Thanks so much for hosting me at The Eater of Books! I’m thrilled to be here dishing on Seducing the Fireman and chatting about the challenge of writing a unique, Halligan toting hero in a romance novel. I should probably start off by admitting I’ve never actually read a romance novel featuring a fireman.

Scandalous, right?

The good news is that when I set out to write Seducing the Fireman, I had no basis for comparison and no expectation of what a romance hero rocking turnout gear should be.

In fact, the only time I’ve encountered a real, live firefighter was when a team of them showed up at my house in the middle of the night to bus me and my newborn son off to the hospital. Unfortunately, I wasn’t exactly in the right state of mind to have a legitimate conversation (so not how I imagined my birth plan or meeting the local fire department), but that’s a story for another day. ;-)

Nope. No preconceived notions here. Which is why I like to think my challenge wasn’t writing a unique fireman, but writing an authentic one. It was incredibly important to me that Jax was legit from the top of his helmet to the tips of his boots. In the way he perceived his job, his training, even the way he spoke and interacted with his crew. Accurately depicting the comradery, fears and challenges of the men and women of the FDNY (or any firehouse) was front and center in my mind as I researched ‘the job’.

And I did a lot of research. Seriously. If you ever get stuck in an elevator, I’m your girl because I have literally memorized the primary removal procedures of the FDNY. As a writer, it was fascinating, but it was also necessary to give Jax’s thoughts and actions an organic feel. The trick was integrating all that research seamlessly to create a hero who was not only passionate about his work, but kick-ass at leading his crew even, when the odds were stacked against them. I hope readers will see Jax as I do—inspiring and sexy

Throughout my research I read so many stories about firefighters making incredible sacrifices and it was clear to me why the men and women of the FDNY are known as New York’s Bravest. It’s also why I’ve committed to donate 10% of the first month’s sales for Seducing the Fireman to the FDNY Foundation.

The Excerpt:

Although Becca’s made it clear she has no interest in rekindling the past, Jax is determined to turn up the heat. And when he crashes Becca’s set in the scene below, the sparks fly…

When he finally found her in a supply closet, she was bent over with her rear in the air, her dark leggings showcasing the perfection of her ass. Not quite what he was expecting, but damn if his cock didn’t swell at the sight. The mental picture of taking her from behind was front and center in his brain as he watched her, eyes glued to her backside.

“Stop staring at my ass,” she said, twisting to confirm her suspicions, “and help me find my phone. I thought I left it on the shelf in here, but I can’t find it. Maybe it fell on the floor?”

She continued to rummage through the boxes and bins on the lower shelves, so he joined her, using his own phone to brighten the dim room as he looked under the rusty shelves. Crawling around in a dirty supply room wasn’t exactly how he imagined spending an evening with the sexy woman beside him, but better him crawling around on the floor than her. Spotting a dark lump beneath the shelving unit, he reached under, hoping like hell he wasn’t about to catch a case of lockjaw for his trouble, and pulled out the phone.

“Got it.”

When he turned to stand, he found Becca right behind him. They collided, his face going straight to her lady bits as her hands tangled in his hair, holding him tight.

They both froze.

The sexual tension in the room was so damn thick they’d need the Jaws of Life to cut through it.

Fuck it.

He gripped her ass, cupping those round cheeks and using them as leverage to pull her close. She remained silent, as if waiting to see what he’d do next. Keeping their bodies flush, he climbed to his feet slowly, savoring the feel of her soft curves against his chest. Their eyes met, and damn if he didn’t want to lose himself in those dark depths. The way she was looking at him, like he was the answer to a prayer she’d never voiced aloud? It nearly stripped him of his restraint. A lesser part of his brain told him to take it slow—the last thing he wanted to do was spook her—but he ignored it, letting instinct take over. Their attraction? It wasn’t cerebral. It was primal.

“Don’t even think about it,” she warned, making no move to separate their bodies, although they stood so close he could feel the rise and fall of her breasts with each breath.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“You know exactly what I’m talking about.” She rolled her eyes and shifted her weight. Was it wishful thinking or had she actually gotten closer? “Don’t be coy.”

“Are you seriously going to pretend you don’t feel that?” He smirked. “The sexual tension in this closet is so thick we’re both drowning in it.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“Now who’s being coy? One word, Becca.” He paused. “Yes. That’s all you have to say.”

Leveling the Field

by Megan Erickson

Reclusive magazine exec Ethan Talley is furious when his business partner hires a photographer—a gorgeous photographer who insists on speaking her mind, damn it—to take pictures for an upcoming article. No matter how badly he wants the woman…under him, over him, against the nearest wall…he has reasons for not wanting to be on camera anymore, and his scars are only one of them.

It takes approximately two seconds for Lissa Kingsman to recognize Ethan as the popular YouTube gamer who fell off the planet years ago. But this Ethan is different than the charming man she used to watch, and the crush she had on him then is nothing compared to the way she’s lusting after the brooding man he is today. If sex is all he can give her, fine. Why not use that bearskin rug in her studio for something other than a prop? But she’s determined to put a chink in his armor, no matter how much he resists.

Start the series with Changing His Game

About Megan Erickson: My first stories written in crayon-scrawl on loose-leaf notebook paper were about my childhood pet - a deaf cat with dandruff. And after covering real-life dramas as a journalist, I decided I liked writing my own endings better and switched to fiction. My romance novels full of humor and heart are a far cry from those early scribblings about my hygiene-deficient pet.

I live in southern Pennsylvania, with my husband, two kids and two cats. I like a good pint of beer, a greasy bacon cheeseburger, homemade mac and cheese, and a great book with a happily ever after. When I'm not tapping away on my laptop, I'm probably listening to the characters in my head who just. Won't. Shut. Up.

Review: Seducing the Fireman by Jennifer Bonds

Rating: 4 stars

Summary (from Goodreads):

Firefighter Jackson Hart is back in Brooklyn and on the hunt for the girl who’s kept him burning for ten long years. The girl he left, in a total prick move, without saying goodbye. Now he’s determined to make it right, to hell with her three-date rule.

But Becca’s not ready to forgive and forget. In fact, she seems determined to stoke his fire every chance she gets. She wants to avoid sexy distractions like him? Fine. Because what she doesn’t know—yet—is that Jax isn’t the kind of man to give up when he wants something. And he always gets what he wants.

What I Liked:

I absolutely love romance novels involving a man in uniform, and a firefighter is especially appealing. I loved book two of this series, Once Upon a Power Play, and I knew that I would enjoy this book. Jennifer Bonds has not disappointed me!

Jackson Hart stood up Becca Mancini ten years ago, leaving her waiting for him to go on their first date. He didn't mean to leave without saying good-bye, but Becca never heard why, and she assumed that he just wasn't interested. Ten years later, Jax is back in Brooklyn, one of New York's Bravest, a firefighter of the FDNY. And he's determined to have a second chance with Becca, to go on three dates with her. Becca hasn't forgotten that he abandoned her ten years ago, but she's finding out that just can't say no when it comes to him.

Jax is such a lovable hero! He's just a little arrogant, not enough to seem like a jerk, but he's really sweet and not a manwhore like many heroes in romance novels. He's confident and kind and totally selfless. He takes his job extremely seriously, driven by a tragic past. I liked seeing Jax's vulnerable side, as well as his charming and sexy side. And boy is he charming and sexy. It comes with the territory - firefighters make great romance heroes for many good reasons. *fans self*

It took me a little bit to warm up to Becca, because at first it seemed like she was going to be a jerk to Jax the whole time. If course, she was stood up by him, so I understand her anger. But Jax begins to wear down her resistance, and she forgives him (and then some). Becca is feisty and not easily pushed around, but she's also a little awkward and (when she wants to be) kind.

If there is one thing that Bonds does really well in her books, it is cook up some seriously hot chemistry, and steamy scenes too. The chemistry and foreplay aspects of her books are so sizzly! As are the steamy adult scenes. I've only read two of Bonds' books but I can tell that she'll be a go-to author for hot romances with likable characters.

On that note, I'd like to mention the depth that Bonds gives to all of her characters. In Once Upon a Power Play, Bonds went deep into the head of a (sexy) hockey player, revealing fears and insecurities that come with the profession and fame. In this book, Bonds does the same, but for the fireman profession. Jax is not just a sexy man with lots of muscles and a glamorous job. I love how we get to see turmoil and effects from his job.

Hot chemistry, steamy scenes, great romance, wonderful characters - what more could you ask for, in a romance novel? The ending is really sweet, and is actually low on the drama at the climax of the book. I appreciated that! This book was lovely, overall.

What I Did Not Like:

One small thing - like I said above, it took some time for me to like Becca. I know that Jax hurt her ten years ago, but in the very beginning, I thought Becca was being unreasonable. As the book went on though, she became more amicable. I liked her overall!

Would I Recommend It:

If you enjoy romance novels, or specifically Brazen romance novels, I really recommend this one (or Once Upon a Power Play!). I know I'm officially hooked on Bonds' books! I hope she has more with Brazen to be published in the future.

Rating:

4.5 stars -> 4 stars (I'm being picky). I really enjoyed this story! I can't wait to read more from the author. She's definitely on my auto-read list!

Book Blitz and Giveaway: Once Upon A Power Play by Jennifer Bonds

Welcome to the release week celebration for Once Upon a Power Play by Jennifer Bonds! This book received a rare five stars from me - it's definitely one of my favorite Brazen novels! Check out my review (HERE), and check out the excerpt and giveaway below. Enjoy!

Once Upon A Power Play by Jennifer Bonds
Book Two of the Risky Business series
Publisher: Brazen
Publication Date: November 16, 2015

Summary (from Goodreads):

He'll do whatever it takes to get her against the boards…

Sidelined by a potentially career-ending injury, the only thing hockey player Ryan Douglas should be thinking about is recovery. But after sharing a near death experience and a night of passion with a spunky brunette, the only thing on his mind is five and a half feet of sexy sarcasm. And he'll do whatever it takes to get her back in his bed--even if it means playing dirty.

Chloe Jacobs is done with fairytales. And men. She's kissed her share of frogs and what's it gotten her? Dumped by text--again. Determined to eighty-six illusions of romance and prove she's more than just a good-time girl, the last thing she needs is a pushy, arrogant hockey player testing her resolve. Especially one who's sinfully good with his hands and thinks date-by-blackmail is a perfectly acceptable social convention.

Ryan wants to play games? Fine by her, but this is one faceoff he's going to lose.

The Excerpt:

“Hey! That’s mine!”

Ryan Douglas froze in his tracks, slowly turning around to find a tiny, pissed off brunette glaring at him with one hand on her hip and the other hugging a gallon-sized jug of margarita mix. “Excuse me?”

“The lime,” she said, nodding her head and enunciating each word as if he might not speak English. “I saw it first.”

It was impossible to suppress the grin that spread over his face. Was she serious? His gaze raked over her, taking in the fancy upsweep of her dark hair and the lacey gold dress—if you could call it that—that revealed more than it covered peeking out from under her unbuttoned coat. The furry brown boots climbing halfway to her bare knees? Those he could do without, but the rest was pretty damn sexy. There wasn’t a winter coat around that could hide those curves. She had the kind of body a man could sink his teeth into. And he. Was. Ravenous.

“Like what you see?” She raised her brow and hooked a thumb over her shoulder. “The meat department is two aisles over.”

He laughed, and it was an honest-to-God, full-on belly laugh. She was a fiery little thing. But that didn’t mean he was giving her the lime. Maybe if she’d asked nicely. But with that attitude? It’d be a cold day in hell.

“Last I heard, possession is nine-tenths of the law.” He tossed the lime in the air and caught it with his right hand. She glared at him, and for a moment he thought she’d kick him in the balls with her big furry boots. He was being an ass, but she wasn’t exactly Miss Manners herself. Besides, it was the most fun he’d had all day. Which spoke volumes about his shitty afternoon, most of which had been spent getting his ass kicked by a sadistic physical therapist. His leg hurt like hell, but he’d tough it out. He had no other choice if he wanted to salvage his career.

The brunette rolled her eyes, the dark irises shimmering like black coffee under the soft glow of the overhead lights. “It’s not my fault you have inhumanly long lumberjack arms.” The smirk that followed told him yes, she was in fact referring to his worn flannel shirt.

Typical self-important New York princess, judging him by something so superficial. Not that he gave a fuck what she thought, but man, what he wouldn’t give to wipe that little grin off her heart-shaped face. And with years of experience antagonizing his two older sisters, he had a pretty good idea of how to do it. He waved the lime in front of her again, wondering if she’d try to make a play for it. Not that she could get her hands on it if he didn’t want her to. He towered over her by nearly a foot, and his reflexes were pretty damn good. “Princess, I wouldn’t give you this lime if you got down on your knees and begged, but if it means that much to you, you’re welcome to give it a go.”

Review: Tell Me You Need Me by Joya Ryan and Once Upon a Power Play by Jennifer Bonds

Tell Me You Need Me by Joya Ryan
Book One of the Search and Seduce series
Publisher: Brazen
Publication Date: November 16, 2015
Rating: 3 stars
Source: eARC from NetGalley

***Warning: this is an adult book, and for the eyes of mature readers***

Summary (from Goodreads):

Playing dirty can be the best kind of fun…

Chloe Franklin wouldn't call herself a commitment-phobe, so much as she's allergic to anything long term. She loves the sexy, sweaty and intensely hot hours of the night that come before the sun rises, though. Especially when those nights are spent with Search-and-Rescuer Gage McGraw...

Gage loves his job, but there is one thing he's starting to like more than the rush of a mission--a stacked blonde with a mouth that haunts his dreams. Every time he steps foot in the sleepy town of Beaufort, he hooks up with Chloe. But he's tired of hooks-ups. He wants more.

Just the sight of Gage gets Chloe's blood going. Hot, bothered, and finally naked, she's ready for their night to start. But before he takes her, he whispers what his intentions really are…and then the games really begin.

What I Liked:

This book and the next book I'll be reviewing (Once Upon a Power Play by Jennifer Bonds) both feature a woman named Chloe, and both Chloe's are commitment phobes and don't want to shack up with the respective man they've come to enjoy spending time with (physically). In this book, Chloe and Gage have known each other for years; he visits a weekend at a time, and he and Chloe hook up, and then he leaves. Both are always anticipating the next time he comes. But Gage might be looking into a more permanent position in Beaufort, and he wants Chloe to go steady with him. But Chloe doesn't want anything permanent, and Gage isn't even sure he wants to stay in the town permanently. But neither of them are going to give up what they currently have.

The first scene in the book took me by surprise, because I had no idea that Chloe and Gage already knew each other (I didn't read the synopsis well enough, I think). I was like... why is she about to hook up with someone who uses THOSE lines?! But they already knew each other. Nevertheless, the first scene is SO hot. Right from the start, we get to see what type of relationship Chloe and Gage have - purely physical, no emotional strings attached.

I really liked Gage; he's a Search-and-Rescuer, and he is currently in between rescues. He's teaching young search-and-rescuers the tricks of the trade in the forest in Beaufort. Gage would never consider settling down in Beaufort (or anywhere), but after a near-death experience, he's decided that he wants Chloe in his life, permanently. Gage is an honest, noble, hot guy, and I liked him.

Chloe was a little harder for me to like because she kept pushing away Gage. She knew she wanted him but didn't want any more from him than a physical relationship. Yet she had feelings for him. I hate this type of confusion, it hurts people unnecessarily! Still, Chloe is a strong type of woman, despite not really knowing what she wants. She's dedicated to her mother's restaurant, and it's really amazing to see how committed she is to see it flourish, after her mother's death.

The pair are good together, especially physically. I didn't feel as much of a connection as I had wanted (maybe because they already knew each other?), and I wish I liked Chloe more, but they definitely had good chemistry. Good, but not really hot, like I was expecting. I've not read any of Joya Ryan's books, but I'd heard that her books were SUPER hot. This book was hot but not really hot, if that makes sense.

Overall, my opinion of this one is fairly positive, despite the three-star rating. I liked it but didn't love. See below for my (vague) dislikes.

What I Did Not Like:

I already stated that I had a hard time liking Chloe. Unfortunately, I didn't like her indecisiveness, and when she made a decision, I still didn't like her. There was a scene in which she finally decided she wanted more from Gage, only to then back out. I'm not really a fan of the way Chloe thinks. It's totally okay to not be sure of what you want; but to string someone along in the process is cruel.

This book wasn't as hot as I'd expected! Maybe my expectations were too high. I'd heard how hot Joya Ryan's books were, but this book didn't see *that* hot? Maybe I'm too demanding. Ha!

I didn't quite feel the emotional connection that these two had, though this could just be me. They had decent chemistry, and the steamy scenes were hot (better than okay but not smokin', if that makes sense). But I didn't quite catch their emotional connection as the book went on - which was sad, because that's basically what this book was about. They already had a great preexisting physical relationship, and this book went through their emotional relationship.

The ending felt a bit neat, which is okay in Brazen books, but doesn't stop me from wanting more! I'm not a fan of the man being the only one to work for the relationship, and the woman not doing anything. I don't really care if that view isn't seen as "feminist" - if you mess up, or even if you just really want to be with the person, you should also be invested in working things out. Grand gestures by the man shouldn't JUST be by the man.

Would I Recommend It:

No. I don't really recommend this one - there are much better Brazen novels. It wasn't that this one was bad - it just wasn't good enough to recommend. Typically I'd only recommend Brazen books that get a rating of four stars or higher from me. 99% of my Brazen reads have been four stars or higher, so there are a lot more Brazen novels that I could recommend!

Rating:

3 stars. Not terrible, but not impressive, either. I might try one of Joya Ryan's other Brazen novels, but this one didn't really do much for me. My next review, for Once Upon a Power Play by Jennifer Bonds, is one in which I highly recommend that novel!

Ryan wants to play games? Fine by her, but this is one faceoff he's going to lose.

What I Liked:

The first book in this series, Once Upon a Dare, probably wouldn't have appealed to me, based on the synopsis. I've not read the book, but I read the synopsis, and it sounds like something I've seen before several times. THIS BOOK THOUGH. Sports romance? From Brazen? Yes, please. I am a huge sports fan - especially when it comes to hockey. Hockey players make for great male protagonists!

When Chloe's date cancels on her, she knows she isn't going to waste the evening she spent preparing for the date - with her new gold dress and high heels. What she doesn't expect is to meet a sexy stranger at the nearby grocery store, who infuriates her and turns her on. Ryan is a professional hockey player, and a good one, despite his months of recovery from an injury. One steamy night leads to another which leads to another; Ryan wants to settle, but will Chloe put aside her past experiences with men and give Ryan a chance?

RYAN DOUGLAS. Get ready to fan yourselves, ladies. Ryan is sexy and swoony and steamy and clever. He absolutely loves his job, the sport, and it's his life. He also enjoys bickering with Chloe, and he goes after her, and what he wants. I really like his alpha-male-ness, and his decisiveness. Underneath the teasing and the testosterone, he is a really good guy. Seriously. He's probably one of my favorite Brazen males.

Chloe is very, very sassy, which is hilarious. When she and Ryan meet in the grocery, she sasses him from the start, angry at him for taking the last lime. She doesn't like being saved, she doesn't like attachments, and she doesn't like how much she wants him, but who is she to deny herself something she wants? For the most part, I liked Chloe a lot.

The pair are really great together; they bicker and clash a lot, and their interactions are always hilarious or steamy. I really enjoyed the romance, outside of the chemistry. The two have serious combustible chemistry, but they also have a great connection. It takes Chloe a bit to really see that she is happy with Ryan. But they are hot together and sweet together!

Like I said before, I loved the sports aspect of this book. I'm a huge sports fan, and I love hockey, so I was really pleased when so much of this book revolved around hockey. Ryan is a professional hockey player (hello, giant hot male!), and Chloe is working in the advertising of the hockey rink/stadium. Hockey is definitely a sport that should be featured in more romances, because the males are some of the hottest (beard or no beard)!

Overall, I absolutely loved this book. It's definitely a Brazen favorite, which is a pretty elusive spot for me (since I read so many Brazen novels, and I usually enjoy them).

What I Did Not Like:

The ending is VERY happy, but I wished for a little more initiative from Chloe. That's all I'll say - I just wish it was less one-sided, things in the end. Ryan is SUCH a good guy! Chloe... well, she needed to work for the relationship like Ryan did. If you catch my drift. Anyway, I liked the ending, despite this one-sided-ness.

Would I Recommend It:

I soooo recommend this Brazen novel, if you're a fan of Brazen novels. Even if you're not, if you like adult contemporary romance, or adult romance in general, I recommend this one. It's a fast read despite its somewhat denseness in emotional content. This will be a go-to Brazen recommendation in the future!

Rating:

4.5 stars -> rounded up to 5 stars (you don't see this from me every day). I almost want to read the first book now (we do see the starring couple in this book several times), and I will definitely be looking out for future books in this series!
