Release Day Blitz and Giveaway: TTYL by Bethany Lopez

Happy release day, Bethany Lopez! Check out her latest novel, and enter to win!

TTYL by Bethany Lopez
Book Four of the Stories About Melissa series
Publication Date: November 12, 2013

Official Summary:

The last few months have been a rough road for Melissa. Her grades have slipped, her parents treat her like a prisoner, and her closest friends are too involved in their own lives to spend time with her. Desperate to escape her depressing funk, she starts spending more time with Layla, who introduces her to a new crowd...the wrong crowd. When Melissa starts to go down a dangerous path, can anyone get through to her before she does something she'll regret?

The Excerpt:

The club was pretty crowded already, even though the band hadn't started yet. There were people milling around talking, buying shirts and C.D.s from what appeared to be groupies. I was shocked to see that there were a lot of people drinking.

I looked around and noticed that most of the people there went to my school. I recognized a lot of them, although none of them were people I normally talked to.

Mo and Layla maneuvered through the crowd and stopped by a group of guys that looked like poster boys for rebellion.

I looked around the room nervously, then realized that Mo was saying my name, trying to introduce me to the group.

I smiled shyly and said, “Hi.”

One of the guys pushed up from his seat to stand. He walked toward me slowly, seeming to grow taller with every step. His dark brown hair was short on the sides and long on top, and styled in a faux-hawk. His dark chocolate eyes looked a little glazed and the smile he gave me was predatory.

He stepped up close enough to have me back up a step. He watched my movements and smiled down at me, leaning in closely to speak.

“Hey, Sunshine, I've never seen you here before. Believe me, I would've noticed.”

My throat went a little dry as his breath hit my ear.

“This is my first time,” I admitted softly.

He leaned back to look at me, his smile wide. “I bet.”

***

His dark eyes narrowed in on my face, then looked me up and down before breaking into a grin.

“Hey, Sunshine.”

The words stuck in my throat momentarily as I looked at his lazy grin. His lips were full, and I realized I was staring when he chuckled softly.

I looked down, embarrassed, then said, “Hey.”

I looked back up and felt as if I was being sucked into his gaze. My heart pounded in my chest, and it suddenly felt hard to breath. He reached his hand out and spun a lock of my hair around his finger. I watched as he wound it round and round, and my palms began to sweat.

“Where ya headed to so fast?” he asked his voice low.

“Class,” I sputtered. My throat was suddenly bone dry.

“You could always ditch,” he said with a grin as he tugged on my hair. “We could go for a drive.”

“Uh… No, I really can’t. I have to bring my grades up,” I replied lamely.

Hawk shook his head and began walking backwards, away from me.

“Your loss, Sunshine. See ya around.”

I collapsed against the wall before my legs gave out, cursing myself for being so stupid.

You should have gone with him. Quit being such a baby. That was why, when Layla suggested the shopping trip, I agreed right away. I needed to change my image.

Review: Make It Last by Bethany Lopez

Make it Last (Friends & Lovers, #1)

Make It Last by Bethany Lopez
Book One of the Friends and Lovers Trilogy
Publication Date: November 3, 2012
Rating: 3 stars
Source: Ecopy sent from the author

(Old review: original review posted HERE on December 26, 2012)

“New Adult”, “Mature Young Adult”, whatever you want to call it, has been catching the attention of readers and authors alike. These days, there is an abundance of books in this age level, and Make It Last is one of them. Please do not be deterred by my so-so rating – I actually enjoyed this book. There were some things in this book that I loved, and other parts of the book that I thought could use some work. Overall, this book is a quick, fun read.

Summary (from Goodreads):

In a small town, it's hard to recover from being dumped by your high school sweetheart. That's just what Briana has to do after Colin leaves her to follow his dreams. She focuses her energy into her friendships and the pursuit of her own goal of becoming a chef. Just when she finally feels like she's on the right path, he comes back to town.

Colin knew breaking up with Briana before leaving for college was the right thing to do. He was determined to leave small-town life behind forever, and that included his high school girlfriend. But when a sports injury puts him on the sidelines, he's forced to return home. Seeing Briana again brings back a lot of memories, and Colin wonders if he made the right decision. It doesn't take long for him to realize he wants her back, and this time, he wants to make it last.

What I Liked:

I liked the cast of characters that Bethany Lopez has introduced. There are so many, and I do not think that all of them go through some sort of character development, but most of them contributed nicely to the plot of the story, or to the major characters.
Briana and Colin’s relationship is supposed to be rocky and tense at first, and then explosive and dynamic. I liked that Briana gave him a second chance – even though when they broke up so long ago, she said that she would not take him back. The overall feel of the book is pretty good. I enjoyed reading the story.

What I Did Not Like:

There are a lot of things that I did not like. To start, I did not understand Colin’s real reasons for breaking up with Briana. The break-up scene seemed flat. And Briana said that she would not give him a second chance, but she did. I am glad that she did, but that was a little hypocritical. I think she should have a least drawn that out a little, because it did not take long for Briana and Colin to get back together.

That was another thing that I did not like – the pacing. This book went be extremely quickly. That does not have to be a negative thing, as some books are meant to be short, but the sequence of events seemed rushed, and not fleshed out. As I said before, there should have been more time between Colin coming back to town, and Briana taking him back.

I also saw little character development in Briana and Colin, the two leading characters. And Briana seemed very fake at times. For example, when she “broke up” with Kent, she seemed lifeless and automated. I did not want her and Kent to be together anyway, but Briana did not seem to care at all about Kent’s feelings, even if she said that she did.

And I did not really feel anything towards Briana and Colin’s relationship. I liked them together, but I did not really get into the chemistry of the two. Furthermore, there seems to be no real conflict in this book. I did not really understand the point, I suppose, besides Colin and Briana getting back together, and moving forward in their lives.

One of my main sticking points is the grammar. I hate to say it, but the sentence structure is a huge hit and miss – mostly a miss. Spelling errors and misplaced modifiers were everywhere. I do not go looking for grammar and structural mistakes with a fine-tooth comb, but when they are obvious, or I can see them clearly, I notice, and point them out. Writing a book also means editing the book.

Would I Recommend It:

Eh, if you like “New Adult”, contemporary, shorter, less complicated stories, go for it. Otherwise, you might be better off skipping this one.

Rating:

3 stars. Again, I enjoyed this book, but there were many things that rubbed me the wrong way.

This series definitely has potential, and I will read I Choose You (book 2), and the next book.

I Choose You (Friends & Lovers, #2)

I Choose You
Book Two of the Friends & Lovers Trilogy
Author: Bethany Lopez
Publication Date: December 27, 2012

Summary from Goodreads:

Up until now, Nicole's life has been mapped out for her. She'd go to college, marry Jake and become the upstanding minister's wife. When she leaves that life to begin again in a small town in Texas, she finally has the freedom to live as she chooses. There, she meets Kent, a guy whose charm and passion make it hard to stick to her morals.

Dodging his father’s fists and protecting his twin sister made Kent into the man he is today. He learned by watching his mother stay by his father’s side that it’s better to keep relationships simple. Then he meets Nicole. Her sweet smile and genuine response to him land like punches to his resolve. After a lifetime of learning to protect his heart, can he finally let down his guard?

Excerpt:

They hit the trail hard. Nicole used the time to clear her head and to reflect on what Kent had told her about his childhood.

They’d led very different lives, and Nicole couldn’t imagine the obstacles he’d dealt with growing up, but she was very impressed with the man he was today.

Kent made sure they did some cool down stretches before getting back in the car.

He’d worried briefly that Nicole would look at him differently when he’d told her a little about his upbringing, but he was happy that he had. He wasn’t ready to tell her everything yet, but he was comfortable with what he’d told her.

He drove her back to her apartment and walked her to the door.

“Do you want to come in?” Nicole asked him, her face was flush from exertion and glistened prettily.

Kent felt a strong urge to gather her in his arms and take her to her room, kissing and stroking her gloriously toned body along the way. He imagined carrying her into the shower and lathering her up.

He shook his head, trying in vain to calm his raging hormones. He felt like a teenager again: unbearably horny and unable to find release. Well… At least not the way he wanted to.

“Um, no,” He replied gruffly. “I’d better not. You have to get ready for work and I have some stuff to do at my house. I’ll give you a call later.”

He leaned down and gave her a kiss on the forehead, then turned and jogged down the stairs, leaving her there staring off after him, the confusion she felt apparent on her face.
