CASE CA4153-228
INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT
LEAD INVESTIGATOR: McGhee, James, Special Agent
SECONDARY INVESTIGATOR: Gonzalez, Alex, Special Agent
PERSON OF INTEREST: Jacobsen, Jonas

Agent McGhee: Thanks for coming in to talk to us, Jonas.

Jonas Jacobsen: Did I have a choice?

Agent McGhee: Fair enough. How well do you know Preston?

Jonas Jacobsen: He surfs a little. I surf a lot. Our paths cross occasionally out in the lineup.

Agent McGhee: But that’s the only way you know him? The two of you aren’t friends off the beach?

Jonas Jacobsen: We’re not even friends on the beach. Richie Rich always acts too good to hang out with real surfers.

Agent McGhee: So then why did you call his phone three times last month?

Jonas Jacobsen: Jesus. You guys are ridic. I called him because the little kook owed me some money.

Agent McGhee: Mind if I ask what for?

Jonas Jacobsen: I customized his board.

Agent McGhee: And gave it back to him before he paid?

Jonas Jacobsen: What can I say? The groundswell set up some nice sets that day and I didn’t want him to miss out. And Preston is made of green. I figured he was good for it.

Agent McGhee: Did he ever pay you? Would you say he was having money problems?

Jonas Jacobsen: He paid me. I don’t know if he was having problems or not. Probably makes more in allowance than I do in a month.

Agent Gonzalez: When’s the last time you saw Preston?

Jonas Jacobsen: Like a week ago? He came into the Shrimp Shack with some of his douchebag football friends while I was working.

Agent Gonzalez: Where were you on Saturday December 3rd?

Jonas Jacobsen: Surfing.

Agent McGhee: All day and night?

Jonas Jacobsen: All day. And then at night my brothers and I camped on the beach. We surfed most of Sunday too. And then I went to work at two p.m.

Agent McGhee: Did you see Preston at the beach on Saturday or Sunday?

Jonas Jacobsen: No. Like I said. I haven’t seen Preston for about a week.

Agent McGhee: Did you see Max Cantrell at the beach?

Jonas Jacobsen: Yeah. He was there on Saturday. Rode a few ankle busters. Went for a walk.

Agent McGhee: But Preston wasn’t with him?

Jonas Jacobsen: Not that I saw.

Agent Gonzalez: Do you know where Max Cantrell is right now?

Jonas Jacobsen: No, brah. We’re not tight or nothing. I just see him in the waves from time to time.

Agent McGhee: Okay, well thanks for coming in. And give us a call if you think of anything that could be helpful.

Jonas Jacobsen: Sure thing.

About the Book:

Liars, Inc. by Paula Stokes
Publisher: HarperTeen
Publication Date: March 24, 2015

Official Summary:

For fans of Gone Girl, I Hunt Killers, and TV's How to Get Away with Murder.

Max Cantrell has never been a big fan of the truth, so when the opportunity arises to sell forged permission slips and cover stories to his classmates, it sounds like a good way to make a little money and liven up a boring senior year. With the help of his friends Preston and Parvati, Max starts Liars, Inc. Suddenly everybody needs something and the cash starts pouring in. Who knew lying could be so lucrative?

When Preston wants his own cover story to go visit a girl he met online, Max doesn’t think twice about hooking him up. Until Preston never comes home. Then the evidence starts to pile up—terrifying clues that lead the cops to Preston’s body. Terrifying clues that point to Max as the murderer.

Can Max find the real killer before he goes to prison for a crime he didn’t commit? In a story that Kirkus Reviews called "Captivating to the very end," Paula Stokes starts with one single white lie and weaves a twisted tale that will have readers guessing until the explosive final chapters.

  3. Thanks ladies. I left this until the last minute and wrote the whole thing in a weekend ;-) Nurse Pili did me the favor of reading through to make sure I hadn't accidentally outed the killer. Thanks Pili :D
