Stacking the Shelves (#49)

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly meme hosted by Tynga's Reviews, in which bloggers share the books and swag they've received in the past week!

So, what did I get in the week of Sunday, November 24th to Saturday, November 30th?

(all links to Goodreads are provided!)

In the mail:

Remember last week's STS post? I promised pictures of whatever Harper sent me?

Ta-da!

A SURPRISE PACKAGE! My first package from Harper, filled with un-requested goodies. I didn't ask for any of these, but I will totally take them! Except Evertrue. I don't want that one. So, I'll probably give it away in January, as my monthly giveaway prize.

Other things from last week...

A Kindle Paperwhite! I won this from Hypable HERE... back in May. Eesh. At least I finally got the prize!

A Goodreads giveaway win - the few and far apart ;)

From NetGalley:

From Edelweiss:

I wasn't sure if I wanted to read this one or not - given my reaction to Wait For You - but I'll see.

For the next two weeks, I might not be around. Heck, I might not even be sane. Can you guess?

FINALS! Two weeks of finals, and then I'm free. I'll see you all after December 16th!

Note: This does NOT mean hiatus. I have blog posts scheduled for the next two weeks. It just means I'll get to comments and replying and tweets later than usual. Like, on weekends.

Cover Reveal and Excerpt: Drew + Fable Forever by Monica Murphy

COVER REVEAL!

I read the first book in this series - One Week Girlfriend - and really enjoyed it.

(Read my review HERE).

So, I am honored to help reveal the cover of Murphy's upcoming novella!

Here it is!

Drew + Fable Forever by Monica Murphy
Book 3.5 of the Drew + Fable series
Publisher: Bantam
Publication Date: January 14, 2014

Official Summary:

Fantasy. How I ended up with NFL player Drew Callahan, the guy every woman wants, is beyond my wildest dreams. All I know is that once he chose me as his one and only, I sure wasn’t looking back. I had past wounds and he showed patience and concern—even accepting responsibility for my messed-up kid brother. Now, yet again, he's found a way to blow my mind: an exotic wedding and honeymoon miles and miles away from home. What else could a girl ever ask for?

Reality. Except now the honeymoon’s over. Drew's football schedule takes him on the road constantly, while I need to stay put and look after my brother until he finishes high school—because God knows our sorry excuse for a mother won’t. I know Drew loves me with all his heart, and I’ll always be over the moon about him. This just isn't how I imagined life as newlyweds . . . dealing with the distance, missing him constantly. But we've gone through hard times before. We can get through this, too, right? We’re Drew and Fable, together forever. At least I hope so...

About the Author:

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Monica Murphy is a native Californian who lives in the foothills below Yosemite. A wife and mother of three, she writes New Adult and contemporary romance for Bantam and Avon. She is the author of One Week Girlfriend and Second Chance Boyfriend.

The Excerpt:

“We should check out Ocean Avenue tomorrow,” Drew whispers close to my ear, amusement tingeing his deep voice.

“What? Are you serious?” Even though I've come to terms with being here, it doesn't mean I want to linger and make it a serious vacation. Besides, Drew needs to get back home so he can resume practice.

“Well yeah, remember the spot where we kissed?” His eyes are warm as they search my face, filled with so much love I feel my heart swell.

“Yes,” I whisper achingly. “Of course I remember.”

“I want to go back there.” He tucks a strand of hair behind my ear, his index finger lingering on my skin. “I want to kiss you again in that little alley and remember how wet we were from the rain. How nervous I was. I was scared you might reject me.”

I’d felt the same way. We’d dealt with much of the same feelings and fears and hadn't even known it.

“I want to take you to that store where you got the dress that just about killed me and buy you whatever you want,” he continues, his fingers drifting across my jaw. My eyes flutter closed as memories rush back at me. “I want to sit outside the dressing room and have you come out to show me every single thing you’re trying on.”

That he remembers all the little details sends a thrill of pleasure spiraling to the very depths of my soul.

“And then I want to wander off for a bit and let you do whatever you want, secretly hoping that you’ll send me a text that says marshmallow. Though if you don’t that’s okay because I’ll send you one instead.” He offers up a crooked smile and the sight of it cracks my heart wide open, overflowing with so much pure love for him I want to cry. “Because we made a deal. Whenever we see or hear that word, the other comes running. I’ll always be the one to rescue you, Fable. You never have to worry about that.”

***Warning: this is an adult book, and for the eyes of mature readers***

Summary (from Goodreads):

He’ll teach her how to bring a man to his knees…

Dr. Ellie Swan has a plan: open her practice in tiny Bluelick, Kentucky, so she can keep an eye on her diabetic father, and make hometown golden-boy Roger Reynolds fall in love with her. But Ellie has a problem. Roger seeks a skilled, sexually adventurous partner, and bookish Ellie doesn't qualify.

Tyler Longfoot only cares about three things: shaking his bad boy image, qualifying for the loan his company needs to rehab a piece of Bluelick’s history, and convincing Ellie to keep quiet about the “incident” that lands him on her doorstep at two a.m. with a bullet in his behind.

The adorable Dr. Swan drives a mean bargain, though. If sex-on-a-stick Tyler will teach Ellie how to bring a man to his knees, she’ll forget about the bullet. Armed with The Wild Woman’s Guide to Sex and Tyler’s lessons, Ellie is confident she can become what Roger needs…if she doesn't fall for Tyler first.

What I Liked:

So, you all know the story behind the first four Brazen novels I read, right? I read four Brazen novels, back-to-back, in July. They were Officer Off Limits, Wrong Bed, Right Guy, Seducing Cinderella, and this one, Private Practice. I think, of the four, this one was my favorite! I like them all quite a bit, but this one is GREAT.

The beginning is probably one of my favorite scenes of the book. Ellie Swan doesn't expect Tyler Longfoot to show up at her door in the middle of the night with a bullet in his butt. You read that right - the guy got shot in the butt, over a girl and a misunderstanding. Sucks to be him! But that tells Ellie one thing - besides the fact that Tyler is reckless - it tells her that he knows his way around women. Not that she didn't already know that. But, this gives her opportunity.

Seeking to snag Roger, a very eligible and very adventurous partner, Ellie enlists Tyler's help in the art of catching a man, but not in your typical way - by means of sex. Apparently, Roger has, um, interesting tastes when it comes to sex. Or say they say. That's why Ellie needs Tyler, so she can learn the interesting ways of sex. Wow. I don't know how to put that any more awkwardly than I just did.

Anyway, somewhere along the lines, Ellie and Tyler totally fall for each other. I love the progression of their relationship - it was slow and subtle, yet fast and dynamic. Ellie and Tyler are perfect for each other. They seem to be opposites, but as themselves, they complement each other well.

I'm pleased with the romance, the humor in this book, and oh my gosh the ending is the best! It is hilarious, how it all resolves, with Ellie and Tyler and Roger. This book has the perfect amount of romance, hot scenes, chemistry, and humor - I especially love the humor! I would recommend this book based on the humor alone.

But seriously, this book was awesome.

What I Did Not Like:

There's nothing that I really didn't like, in a way, but this book just felt like a four-star read to me. I know, there should be something that made me rate this book as four stars, instead of five. But it's just how I feel.

Would I Recommend It:

YES! I feel like I said this for each of the four Brazen books I read and reviewed from this summer, but this one was probably my favorite. Probably. So, you should definitely try this one. For the humor alone, a romance novel lover would find this one enjoyable.

Rating:

4 stars. I'm so glad I read this one! And this is what happens when I go Brazen crazy :D

Swoon Thursday (#44): Control by Lydia Kang

Swoon Thursday is a hot meme hosted by the fabulous ladies at YA Bound!

- From the book you’re currently reading, or one you just finished, tell us what made you SWOON. What got your heart pounding, your skin tingling, and your stomach fluttering

- Try to make the swoon excerpt 140 characters (or less), if you are going to tweet about it. Use the hashtag #YABOUND when tweeting

This week, my swoon is from Control by Lydia Kang!

"Don't leave." His hand passes within an inch of my face to shut the door once and for all, and then slips to my cheek. My skin burns with electricity that even Micah couldn't generate. Only this time, there are no magic tricks involved.

I know we;re on the knifes edge of something and nothing, but nothing is all I've ever had. I don't know what to do. So I shut my eyes and turn away. Cy catches my arm to spin me around. Before I can inhale with surprise, his lips are on mine.

His mouth is warm and strong, and it sends waves of weakness down my spine. He breaks the kiss and I sway, unsure if my legs are still working.

"Don't leave," he repeats in a whisper.

I take a few breaths and hold on to the wall. I nod, the tiniest movement of my head, and just like that, I'm over the knife's edge and drowning in a sea of something. Cy encircles my waist with his arm and tilts his head down to find my lips again. We bump against the wall and there's no Micah, no horrors, no parental disappointments, nothing but this fire in my toes and knees and every inch of skin I possess.

I pull him closer, as if I could make his very molecules lock with mine and never let go.

Cy scoops me up and carries me over to his bed as if I weighed less than an ounce. We melt into the softness of his sheets, and the delicious weight of his body pins me to the bed.

Blog Tour Review and Giveaway: Crash Into You by Katie McGarry

Welcome to the Crash Into You blog tour! I'm honored to be a part of this review tour. I hope you all enjoy my review! There isn't a ton of gushing and OMG-love-so-much, but I'm sure someone will find it informative :)

Check out the rest of tour HERE.

Crash Into You by Katie McGarry:
Book Three of the Pushing the Limits series
Publisher: Harlequin TEEN
Publication Date: November 26, 2013
Rating: 3 stars
Source: ARC sent by the publisher

Summary (from Goodreads):

From acclaimed author Katie McGarry comes an explosive new tale of a good girl with a reckless streak, a street-smart guy with nothing to lose, and a romance forged in the fast lane

The girl with straight As, designer clothes and the perfect life-that's who people expect Rachel Young to be. So the private-school junior keeps secrets from her wealthy parents and overbearing brothers...and she's just added two more to the list. One involves racing strangers down dark country roads in her Mustang GT. The other? Seventeen-year-old Isaiah Walker-a guy she has no business even talking to. But when the foster kid with the tattoos and intense gray eyes comes to her rescue, she can't get him out of her mind.

Isaiah has secrets, too. About where he lives, and how he really feels about Rachel. The last thing he needs is to get tangled up with a rich girl who wants to slum it on the south side for kicks-no matter how angelic she might look.

But when their shared love of street racing puts both their lives in jeopardy, they have six weeks to come up with a way out. Six weeks to discover just how far they'll go to save each other.

What I Liked:

This book was easily one of my most anticipated contemporary reads of 2013. Of course, Dare You To was as well, but both of these books are 2013 releases (craziness! Katie McGarry is a machine!). I knew that I just HAD to read Isaiah's story. Isaiah wasn't always someone that I liked, but after I read Dare You To, I definitely wanted to understand him better.

This book does just that, and more. I love how well McGarry is able to flesh out her characters. Book after book, this is something at which she continually proves that she excels. And not only can she flesh them out, but she can expound upon their differences, their uniqueness, their personalities. You'd think that with writing each book in dual points-of-view, one girl, one guy, that the perspectives would grow tiresome and similar and repetitive and boring.

But no. McGarry has a way with keeping each individual character unique and him/herself. Noah, Echo, Beth, Ryan, Isaiah, Rachel... they are all very different. This isn't like those New Adult contemporary romance novels, where the heroes are all macho alpha males, and the heroines are "tough" girls who need a man. No. I love how original the characters of each book are, and different each story is.

This story is VERY different from the other two. Isaiah and Rachel get into some scary business - they owe a guy a ton of cash in a short amount of time. And it isn't just about the money; it's about control, like a power struggle. People could get hurt, or worse, killed. And unfortunately for Isaiah, he's caught in the middle of it, without even meaning to be.

It's kind of all Rachel's fault. If she hadn't wanted to drag race (or whatever), none of this would have happened. But that's okay. I forgive her (ish), because this book wouldn't have happened without that mistake. But anyway, this book is all about Isaiah and Rachel, and their struggle to come up with the money, to protect themselves, to start a relationship, and to reconcile issues within their families.

See how complex that is? So many things are happening in the book. It's more than just a love story. It's more than just Isaiah and Rachel. It's about Isaiah, getting in touch with his mother - the mother he absolutely loathes for leaving him. It's about Rachel, getting the help she needs, and standing up to HER mother (and entire family). It's about getting that money. It's about staying alive.

I really like Isaiah. I feel like I understand him so much better, now that I've read things from his perspective. I kind of want to go back and read the entire series again, now that I have the knowledge of what happened with Beth/Ryan and Isaiah/Rachel.

What I Did Not Like:

I feel like there are a lot of little things that I didn't like, and I've already forgotten most of them, because they were minor things. But some of the big things were annoying.

Like, for example, Rachel. I just did NOT like her. I couldn't connect with her at all. She thinks she's weak - she's got that right. Physically, mentally, emotionally... she's weak. She's definitely dense, as Isaiah once described her, and she's stupid, in my opinion. I get what McGarry was going for - the stereotype of a rich, ditsy girl - but Rachel is EXACTLY THAT. I tried and tried to get past that image, but that's all I could see.

Mistake after mistake, event after event, Rachel kept proving to me that she doesn't exactly use her reasoning skills, and she is not mentally strong enough to handle herself, let alone others. I mean, I get it, you don't want to upset your mother. But seriously?! You let yourself be pushed around for SO LONG, to live up to a dead girl? Screw that. NO ONE is worth pretending or losing myself. I would NEVER stoop that low, to make my mother happy. Sorry, Mommy, but you're never getting anything but the real me.

Okay, so I really just did NOT like Rachel. Weak. Stupid. Naive. Doesn't-deserve-Isaiah.

And I felt like the romance was kind of off. Like, yes, this book is almost five hundred pages long, and somewhere in those five hundred pages, Rachel and Isaiah fall in love. But I feel like in the beginning, the romance is thrown at readers. It isn't progressive, in my opinion. It's not there, and then suddenly, it is. In the previous two books, the relationship takes time - probably about half the book or more. In this book, it seems like Rachel and Isaiah are all the other can think about, after seeing each other one time.

I'm not okay with that.

It's not quite insta-love, but it's more like really rushed first stages of the relationship. We know they are going to end up together. Slow down and let us enjoy reading that.

I can't think of anything else. That must be it.

Would I Recommend It:

Despite not absolutely LOVING this book, I would still highly recommend it. So many other bloggers read and LOVED this book - there are so many five-star ratings and reviews out there, for this book. So, you should read this one, if you planned on it! Especially if you've read and enjoyed the first two books.

Rating:

3 stars. I enjoyed this book, but it definitely isn't my favorite of the series. However, I will be reading Take Me On! I can't wait to get into West's head.

Waiting on Wednesday (#48): Pointe by Brandy Colbert

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week, I'm featuring:

Pointe by Brandy Colbert
Publisher: Penguin
Publication Date: April 10, 2014

Summary (from Goodreads):

Theo is better now.

She's eating again, dating guys who are almost appropriate, and well on her way to becoming an elite ballet dancer. But when her oldest friend, Donovan, returns home after spending four long years with his kidnapper, Theo starts reliving memories about his abduction—and his abductor.

Donovan isn't talking about what happened, and even though Theo knows she didn't do anything wrong, telling the truth would put everything she's been living for at risk. But keeping quiet might be worse.

Another Friday the Thirteeners book. Also, I don't read nearly enough tough-issue contemporary novels, or dance-related novels. And I like Brandy, so, yeah :)

Review: Pawn by Aimee Carter

Pawn by Aimee Carter
Book One of the Blackcoat Rebellion series
Publisher: Harlequin TEEN
Publication Date: November 5, 2013
Rating: 4 stars
Source: ARC sent by the publisher

Summary (from Goodreads):

YOU CAN BE A VII IF YOU GIVE EVERYTHING.

For Kitty Doe, it seems like an easy choice. She can either spend her life as a III in misery, looked down upon by the higher ranks and forced to leave the people she loves, or she can become a VII and join the most powerful family in the country.

If she says yes, Kitty will be Masked - surgically transformed into Lila Hart, the Prime Minister's niece, who died under mysterious circumstances. As a member of the Hart family, she will be famous. She will be adored. And for the first time, she will matter.

There's only one catch. She must also stop the rebellion that Lila secretly fostered, the same one that got her killed, and one Kitty believes in. Faced with threats, conspiracies and a life that's not her own, she must decide which path to choose and learn how to become more than a pawn in a twisted game she's only beginning to understand.

What I Liked:

One of my first thoughts as I started this book was, oh, the social class thing. That's nothing new. Didn't Kiera Cass do a similar thing, with The Selection? Her system went from one to nine - one being awesome, nine being not-so-awesome (if I remember correctly). In this book, the social classes go from I to VII - VII being the best, I being the worst. So, I was like, really?

And then, recently, I read a book called The Princess in the Opal Mask by Jenny Lundquist, which I rather enjoyed, mind you. In this book, there is a real princess, and then there is the girl who doubles as the princess, for the princess's protection. This book, Pawn, has that aspect in it as well. So, again, I was like, really?

Well, it's a good thing I kept reading, despite my initial thoughts - I totally thought that this book would be very unoriginal. I mean, the concepts aren't really new. I read The Selection. I've read many, many dystopia novels. And I read The Princess in the Opal Mask. So, everything in this book should have felt very familiar, and I didn't think I would like that.

Well, I'm glad I was wrong, in a sense. YES, the idea of this book is not new. YES, the concepts aren't new, the roles of the characters aren't all that original, and quite frankly, the general plot isn't new. BUT, the execution of this novel IS new and original. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I'm glad that I stuck with it.

Kitty has been given a second chance at getting a new ranking - a VII. Only the Harts, basically the royal family, get marked as VII. Which makes sense, because they want Kitty to became a royal family member: Lila Hart. All Kitty has to do is pretend that she is Lila, and she gets a life of luxury. But no freedom. No choices. And no Benjy (her boyfriend).

It's not too long before Kitty realizes that things are just WRONG. Lila didn't die - she was murdered. Lila's mother will stop at nothing to get back at the Prime Minister (Lila's uncle). Lila's grandmother will stop at nothing to make sure that Kitty does everything she is supposed to do, as Lila. And Lila's fiance, Knox, is definitely not the puppet he seems.

Believe me when I say that the plot of this novel is sooo not what I expected. It was a little slow at first, but once it picked up, I couldn't get enough. Yes, this book deals heavily with a rebellion and a tyrant and deception. But Carter throws plot twist after plot twist, which is really nice, because if she hadn't, it would be a typical dystopia novel, and I might have gotten bored and rolled my eyes a little. Just saying.

But anyway. The plot is superb, well constructed. The romance surprised me. I totally thought there would be a love triangle - there wasn't. At least, not really, in this book. There is one guy who holds Kitty's heart, and by the end of the book, you're sure of that. I like this. No love triangle, no shenanigans.

The ending isn't a cliffhanger, but it definitely leads into the next book. Like, this book could NOT be a standalone. Totally fine by me!

What I Did Not Like:

I already mentioned this above, but this book really reminded me of The Selection, and The Princess in the Opal Mask. The similarities weren't overwhelming or overbearing, but I definitely noticed them. For a while, I really thought this book would be just like any other dystopia novel - and it still is, with the rebellion and whatnot, but it's different, and different enough for me to keep reading.

Would I Recommend It:

I would! Don't miss this one - it's a great book! The action, high stakes, and different romance makes this one worth borrowing/buying/whatever (wait no, don't steal or pirate, please!). Do it!

Rating:

4 stars. A really great start to a new series! I'll definitely be reading the sequel (and probably any other books to follow, if the sequel delivers).
